System Name
The Calculation of Speed used by AES System to Determine the Speed of a Vehicle

About the system

The AES system is an Automated Enforcement Systems that is used by the government to
monitor and enforce the safety of all federal roads, highways and expressways in Malaysia. The
system works by installing two speed censors on the road with a set distance apart from each
other with a high-speed camera located on the other side of the road. Whenever a vehicle passes
through both of the censors, the time which taken by the vehicle to travel between the specific
distance is picked up by the censors in calculating the speed of the vehicle. Thus, a highly
accurate measure of the vehicle speed is obtained. If the speed of the vehicle has exceeded the
speed limit stated by the governments, Road Transport Department and state officials, a snapshot
of the vehicle plate number will be taken by the high-speed camera and the irresponsible driver
will be filed with a speeding ticket.

User usability
The system is installed on highways which are dangerous and always busy with vehicles. For
example, the LEKAS Highway and the ELITE Highway in Malaysia both uses AES system as
their road safety measure. Other than that, the system also helps by enforcing road safety on
places where an accident would cause a detrimental aftermath such as hospital area, school
compound, residential area and road intersection Therefore, the ones that are benefiting from this
system are the safety of residents especially the elderly and the kids.

Functions used in the system

=SUM(B9*60^2)/(C9*1000)

Formula used in the system

[d(60)^2]/[t(1000)] d = Distance between the 2 speed censors (in meter)

t = time taken for the vehicle to travel between the 2 censors

Example:

Identification Formula

Used to calculate the unit conversion of Fahrenheit to

=(C4)-32*5/9)
Celsius

Used to display the output of the conversion of

Conclusion
“How does this system, using the application of functions help in solving real
life problem?”
 The system helps by catching and punishing those who drives recklessly and
irresponsible so that they will learn their lessons. Thus, reducing the occurrence of
accidents caused by high-speed traffic.
 With the decrease of accidents occurrences, the elderly and those who are disabled can
cross the road more reassuringly and more lives are protected.
 Traffic jam caused by high-speed traffic accidents on highway will also be avoided more.
Thus, making the trip smoother for everyone.
 The system will act as a threat or warning to all drivers to drive responsibly and with
more attention.

Reflection
"What are the suggestions of improvement of the system in the future?"
 Install high-speed censors with higher sensitivity and frequency to get a more accurate
reading of the speed of moving vehicles.
 Use a higher frequency camera to get a clearer shot of the number plate of a high-speed
vehicle so that they will not be able to escape the fine no matter how fast they drive.
 Install and expand the use of AES system onto predeveloping area.
