METHODOLOGY- INITIAL VERTICAL LOAD TESTING IN COMPRESSION: CYCLIC
METHOD

The test pile will be reinforced and concreted upto ground level for
visual inspection. The steel reinforcement shall be ensured that it is
available for reaction welding. The steel bars shall be welded in place
over a steel plate and the same shall be used to provide the uplift thrust
for the piles.

Suitably designed anchor piles will be used to draw reaction for

loading the pile to the desired load design to be done and submitted
on receiving the soil test data. The anchor piles will be kept at a
distance equal to or more than three times the dia of the test pile.

With the testing arrangement made in compression load is applied

to the pile top by means of a hydraulic jacks(1 to 4 no.s) against
rolled steel joists (ISMB-800 – 4 No.s), anchored to the pre-designed
anchor piles/dead load installed symmetrically around the test pile.
The load on a pile is applied by a series of vertical downward
incremental load each increment being of about 20% of safe load.
As as the code suggests that the increment should be ABOUT
20% and the same is not a limiting criteria hence we shall
increase load to a tentative 20% of the load in the same spirit.

Settlement is recorded with the help of 4 dial gauges for single pile
of 0.01mm sensitivity each positioned at equal distance around the
test pile. Datum bars resting on immovable supports at a distance of
3D (subjected to a minimum of 1.5m) from the edge of the piles
where D is the pile stem dia hold the dial gauges.
TC-11097

Alternate stages of loading and unloading shall be maintained for

the correct calculation of the frictional & bearing resistance
provided to the pile shaft. Each stage of loading is maintained till
rate of displacement of the pile top is either 0.1mm in first 1 hour or
0.2mm in the first hour or till 2 hrs. whichever occur first. Also each
stage of unloading is also maintained for a period of 15 minutes
minimum as mentioned in IS 2911 part-IV.

The test load is applied to 2.5 times the safe load for test piles as per
the provision of design drawings.

METHODOLOGY- INITIAL LATERAL LOAD TESTING ON A SINGLE PILE AT

The Initial lateral load test on a single pile will be carried out as per the provisions
of IS-2911 (Part-4) 1985 by taking reaction from the existing piles/earth in the pile
group around the test pile. For applying lateral load to the test pile , one side of the
pile is chiseled/smoothened against which the ram of the hydraulic Jack acts. The
other end of the jack is packed against the anchor piles with the help of a piece of
girder suitably fixed in between the anchor piles and the jack. The reaction is then
drawn from these anchor piles and a horizontal load is applied to the test pile (as
per the plan diagram). Deflection readings are then observed with the help of dial
gauges fixed on datum bars and with its needle acting against the opposite end of
the test pile as shown in diagram.

The safe lateral load on the pile shall be taken as the least of the following for
initial load test:

1. Fifty percent of the final load at which the total displacement increases to
12mm i.e. at two times the safe load the deflection should not be more than
12mm for a pile to be safe.

2. Final load at which total displacements corresponds to 5mm i.e. at the safe
load the deflection should be less than 5mm for the pile to be safe.

For Initial pile tests the test is conducted up to 2 times the safe load or else as
specifically mentioned by the designer.
TC-11097

To transfer reaction from the anchored girders to the test pile one manual
controlled hydraulic jack will be used. The jack will be operated with a single
hydraulic pump.

For this test we propose to take reaction from existing anchor piles using jacks and
girders.

CONCLUSION (VERTICAL LOAD)

AS PER DESIGN CONDITIONS ACCORDING TO IS2911-
PART IV-2013
The safe load on a single pile as per the above mentioned
code should be least of following :

1 Two-third of the final load at which the total displacement

attains a value of 18mm. or maximum of 2% pile diameter
whichever is less
Hence at a load of about 585 MT the settlement should be
less than 18mm. Since 18mm settlement is not achieved the
pile is safe for its design load of 390 MT

2 50% of the final load at which the total displacement

equals 10% of the pile diameter.
Hence at a load of 780 MT the settlement should be less
than 120mm. Since 120mm settlement is not achieved
hence the pile is safe for design load of 390MT

Keeping in mind that the pile is safe in both the failure

criteria hence it is recommended that 390 MT design
vertical load should be considered as safe
