BASED ON CONVERSION FROM ONE SYSTEM TO
ANOTHER
1. Find the value of 60 joule per minute on a system that has 100g, 100cm
and 1 min. as the base units

1 K -4 . Find its value in SI units.
3. Convert force of 1 Newton from SI system to CGS system.
4. Convert work done of 1 Joule from SI to CGS system
5. Convert Universal Gravitational Constant, G = 6.67 X 10-11 N m 2 Kg-2 .
6. If the value of atmospheric pressure is 106 Dyne cm-2 . Find its value in SI
system.
7. The density of Hg is 13.6 X 103 Kg m-3 . Convert it from SI to CGS.
8. When 1m, 1kg and 1 min. are taken as the fundamental units, the
magnitude of the force is 36 units. What will be the value of this force in CGS
system.
9. If the units of force, energy and velocity are 20N, 200J and 5ms-1 . Find the
unit of length mass and time.
10. Find the value of 100 Joule on a system which has 20cm, 250g and half
minute as fundamental units of length mass and time respectively.
11. If velocity of light (c), Plank’s constant (h) and universal gravitational
constant (G) are taken as fundamental units and determine the value of mass,
length and time in terms of c, h and G

BASED ON DERIVATION OF THE FORMULA

1. The velocity V of water wave depends on wavelength λ of wave, density of
water ρ and acceleration due to gravity g. Derive with the method of
dimensions formula for velocity.
2. Assuming that the mass M of the largest stone that can be moved by a
flowing river depends on velocity V, density ρ and value of acceleration due to
gravity g. Show that mass M varies directly proportional to 6th power of
velocity V.
3. The velocity V of sound wave through a medium depends on density of the
medium ρ and modulus of elasticity. Then derive formula for speed of sound
wave.
4. The frequency ‘ ν ’ of vibration of a stretched string depends upon length ‘ l ‘
of the string, its mass per unit length ‘ m ‘ and tension T in the string. Obtain
dimensionally an expression for frequency
5. A planet moves around the sun in nearly circular orbit. Its period of
revolution T depends upon radius (r) of orbit, mass (m) of sun and universal
gravitational constant (G). Show dimensionally that T2 varies directly
proportional to r3 .
6. A large fluid star oscillates in shape under the influence of its own
gravitational field. Using dimensional analysis, find expression for time period
of oscillation T in terms of radius of star (R), mean density of fluid (ρ) and
universal gravitational constant (G).
7. The depth (x) to which a bullet penetrates a human body depends upon (i)
coefficient of elasticity (η) and (ii) kinetic energy Uk. Using method of
dimensions derive an expression for depth.
8. If velocity (v), density (ρ) and frequency (ν) are taken as the fundamental
units, then derive the formula for surface tension

BASED ON PRINCIPLE OF HOMOGENITY

1. Find the dimensions of a/b in the equation F = a √ + bt2 , where F is force, x

is distance and t is time.
2. Find the dimensions of ab in the relation : P =b-x2/ac , where P is power, x is
distance and t is time.
3. When light travels through glass, the refractive index(μ) of glass is found to
vary with wavelength(λ) as , μ = A + b /pie2 Using principle of homogeneity,
determine the dimensions of A and B. see this question in the worksheet
4. In the equation, y = Sin ( ωt – Kx ), t and x stands for time and distance
respectively. Determine the dimensions of ω and K.
5. Find the dimensions of ( a x b) in the equation : E =b-x2/at , where E is
energy, x is distance and t is time.
6. Find the dimensions of a/b in the relation : P =a-t2/bx , where P is power, x
is distance and t is time.

) RT, where P is pressure, V is volume, R is real gas constant and T is
temperature.
