PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION CHECKLIST

Misfire

Condition:
Given a mounted 60mm mortar, a crew, dummy ammunition and a simulated malfunction,
conduct misfire procedures in conventional mode in order to continue operations.
Standard:
To achieve mastery, you must perform each of the performance steps correctly and continue
operations.
Attempt: 1st 2nd 3rd
PERFORMANCE STEPS PASS FAIL
1. Announce "MISFIRE."
2. Ensure gunner braces bipod.
3. Kick the barrel three times (medium and low), as required.
*If charge 1 or lower you may attempt to trigger fire the round out
as long as the baseplate is seated.
4. If round fires, the mortar is re-laid and firing is continued.
5. If round does not fire, place firing selector on "S" (during
peacetime, the squad should back off the gun line 50 meters and
wait 1 minute).
6. Allow cannon to cool as required.
a. Use the back of bare hands to check for heat.
b. Check for heat starting at the muzzle to breech stem.
7. Gunner locks data and attempts to remove the sight unit.
8. Gunner braces the bipod.
9. Lower cannon to .25 inches (.64cm) of inner elevation sleeve
showing.
10. Loosen collar knob.
11. Rotate cannon 90 degrees to show the selector position to the
mortar crew.
12. The Squad leader/Gunner will place his hands near the base cap
with his palms facing up. The Squad leader/Gunner will then call
up the Assistant Gunner,
13. The Assistant Gunner approaches the cannon in a low profile
staying to the right of the cannon and takes a position to the right of
the gun bracing the dead leg with his left leg. He then places his
hands below the reinforced lip on the cannon.
14. The Squad leader/Gunner lifts the breech end of the cannon.
a. Communicate with the A-gunner as required
b. Communicate with the gun crew when cannon is horizontal.
c. Ensure the cannon is not lowered below horizontal.
d. Slowly lift the cannon from the horizontal position.
e. Listen/announce for ammunition movement in cannon.
15. If round slides out of cannon, ensure assistant gunner stops the
round with the meaty portions of his thumbs, removes it from bore,
and passes it to the ammunition handler.
a. Ensure assistant gunner announces "I have the round" once the ammunition
has been removed from the cannon.
16. Ensure ammunition man reinserts the safety pin then inspects the
round.
a. Replace increments as required.
b. Inspect the ammunition for dented primer or damage.
c. Re-pack ammunition as required.
d. If the primer is not dented and the safety pin can be inserted, attempt to fire
on an adjacent gun.
17. Ensure ammunition man places suspect round in dud pit, if
necessary.
18. If round will not slide out of cannon, remove cannon from bipod.
a. Maintain positive control of the mortar while slowly moving the cannon
back to the horizontal position.
b. Remove the cannon from the bipod while still maintaining the horizontal
position by opening the breach clamp.
c. Move the cannon to the left or right of the gun line while pointed down
range.
d. Place cannon on the ground pointed down range.
19. After the round is removed, lift the base as high as possible and
shake the cannon to dislodge any debris.
20. Reassemble and re-lay the mortar.
21. Swab the cannon if time permits.
22. Notify EOD.
