Developing Functional Literacy: Participatory Approach

Functional Literacy- is the ability to manage daily living tasks that


require reading skills beyond a basic level.

“Functional literacy” vs. “literacy”

refers to the
ability to read or
write at ANY level.
refers to practical
skills needed to live
a normal life.

Participatory approach
 Is a method of teaching and learning where students are actively
involved in the process.

 Also known as “Freirean approach”


Is a teaching method that
uses real-life issues and
experiences relevant to
the students lives as the
basis of learning.

4 FORMS AND FUNCTIONS OF PARTICIPATION:


a. Nominal Participation
 People are involved in a project or plan, but their input
doesn’t really make a difference.

b. Instrumental Participation
 People’s involvement is used to achieve specific goals
where their skills and knowledge are used but their
ideas might not be the central to the projects direction.
c. Representative Participation
• Involves giving community members a voice in the decision-
making and implementation of projects or policies that affect
them.

d. Transformative Participation

• People work together to change unfair systems.

5 Strategies to help you build an Inquiry-based


classroom

a. Don’t always answer student question.

b. Spend more time on projects and less time lecturing.

c. Accept that no two classes will be the same.

d. Include time for reflection at the end of every lesson.

learning through working together.
