Movie Review - Waltz With Bashmir
Ari Forman chose to document his past through this animation, the pain of his memory of the part he played in the Lebanese war and the Massacre of Palestinian. Waltz With Bashir is about the cold fingers of memory that clutch the heart. Forman's exemplary film says that only by exposing the wounds can they begin to heal. The message of the futility of war has rarely been painted with such bold strokes. (Corliss, 2010) Forman translates his past nightmares that lingered on after the event, this is portrayed as a documentary in which Forman tracks down some of the friends that were beside him in both historic instances. To represent this dark stage of Formans life was a bold step to tell the viewer the history and trauma of the experience that a person would try and forget but unable to because of the links through Formans nightmares that plague him.
The memories of Forman and the men are mixture of documentations of the war experiences and different wild visuals that represents imagery of the evil they faced together and what they could never escape from. The imagery we see is at once beautifully drawn, vivid and intensely disturbing; watching the film, I kept swinging emotionally back and forth between the compelling visual sense of the film and the horrors of the tales being told. (Voynar, 2010) The visuals tell the audience about the men who are being documented in the film, for example one of the men dreams of being on a ship and a large naked women rising from the sea that the man sails on like the raft. The embrace is strong as it visualises a mother cradling a new born baby in her arms protecting him from the horrors he faced. Another man has a recurring nightmare of a pack of dogs chasing him, which could represent his guilt catching up with him from the darkness he cant escape. It Also is a reminder of his task to shoot the dogs on patrol to search for invaders. Forman has used powerful messages in the dream sequences to reveal how past soldiers are effected mentally.
Forman has chosen to shoot the scenes through the documentations to be very realistic to the events of the war and massacre. The second is Waltz with Bashir, a mixture of animation and documentary that has some interesting things to say about the rotten state of Israel, even though it pulls back from the precipice that divides its makers from the hard core supporters of Palestinian rights in Israel. (Proyect, 2010) The animation makes clear how the terrorist groups treated the people of Israel and shows how the people lived in fear and how Forman and his group faced many challenges such as their encounter with the young boy in the jungle carrying a rocket
launcher who they have to kill or the man running for his life as his friends slowly each get shot and he lived with the guilt of not protecting them. Forman also includes real footage at the end of the animation of the peoples reaction to the devastation of all the innocent deaths and the destruction that surrounded them.
