1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of eleven (11) questions.
2. Answer all questions in sections A and B and two (2) questions from section C.
3. Section A carries sixteen (16) marks, section B fifty four (54) marks and section C
carries thirty (30) marks.
4. Non – programmable calculators may be used.
5. Except for drawings which must be drawn in pencil, all writings must be
in blue or black ink.
6. Cellular phones and any unauthorized materials are not allowed in the
examination room.

3. (a) Explain three ways in which simple machine help people to simplify work.
(b) A machine having a velocity ratio of 5 requires 600J of work to raise a load of 400N. If the load
movesa distance of 0.5m, calculate the mechanical advantage and efficiency of machine.
4. (a) (i) Why most of vehicles have their engines and chassis placed as low as possible?
(ii) Briefly explain why with application of the same force on the same bolt, a spanner with
long stem will open a nut easily than the spanner with a shorter stem?
(b) A uniform rod with a mass of 120g and a length of 130cm is suspended by a wire from a point
80cm from the rod’s left end. What mass must be hung from the right end of the rod for it to be
in equilibrium?

5. (a) A car is moving at 36km/h. what is the velocity in m/s that will:
(i) Double the momentum

(b) Why a ship cannot overturn when hit by a strong wave on one side?
6. (a) A technician was given a task of wiring a house. He was planning to connect four bulbs such
that, each bulb lights at its normal brightness. With two reasons, explain how he could connect
the bulbs.
(b) Two resistors 3Ω and 6Ω are connected in parallel to a 3V battery. Draw its circuit and calculate
the current passing through each resistor.
7. (a) (i) Why convex mirrors are used as driving mirrors? Give two reasons.
(ii) Give two effects of total internal reflection of light.
(b) An object 20 cm high is placed 40 cm from a concave mirror of focal length 15 cm.
Determine the position, nature and size of the image formed.
(c) The diagram below shows the dispersion of white light passing through the glass prism. Give
the name of the color represented by the numbers as shown in the figure above in order of
decrease of wavelength.
8. (a) Describe and explain the appearance of a red tie with blue sport when observed in
(i) Red light
(ii) Green light
(b) A box of 3kg is resting on a table. It requires a force of 8N to set the box sliding. A 1kg mass is
placed on top of the block. What force will be required to make the box start sliding?

9. (a) Explain briefly how rainbows formed.
(b) Distinguish between additive and subtractive color mixing
(c) Briefly explain why:

(iv) It is easier for the fish to swim in water

10. (a) Distinguish between the following reflection and refraction of light.
(b) A ray of light is incident on a triangular glass prism at an angle of incidence of 52° such that its
angle of prism is 48°. It travels through the prism and emerges at the other end. If the refractive
index of the glass is 1.5; calculate:
(i) The angle of refraction (r) at the first boundary
(ii) The angle of incidence (i2) at the second boundary
(iii) The angle of emergence (e) out of the prism
(v) The angle of deviation (Ϫ) of the ray.
(c) Sketch a graph that show the variation of angle of deviation with the angle of incidence.
11. (a) A body is being acted on by two forces: F1 = 18N and F2 = 12N acting at 36° to each other.
Find the resultant of the two forces.
(b) A motorboat travelling 6m/s east encounters current traveling at 3.7m/s south. Calculate:
(i) The resultant velocity of the motorboat
(ii) The time it takes for the boat to travel shore to shore if the width of the river is 120m
wide.
(c) The relative velocity of car A to that of car B is 32m/s when moving in opposite direction and
7m/s when moving in the same direction. Calculate the velocity of car B.
