Grammar 4 Modals: Deductions and Future Possibility

We use might, may, or could to say that it is possible that something is true (in the
present or the future).

We use can’t when we think that something is definitely impossible.

We use must when we think that something is definitely true.

We use should when we think that something good is likely to happen.

We use can to say that something is generally true.

We use will be able to to say that something will be possible in the future.

Exercise 1. Choose the sentence that has the same meaning as the first
sentence.
1. Visiting other countries can be educational.
A. Most people think that visiting other countries is sometimes educational.
B. Most people think that visiting other countries is always educational.

2. The maths exam might be difficult.


A. It's certain that the maths exam will be difficult.
B. It's possible that the maths exam will be difficult.

3. That man can't be our new teacher.


A. That man is definitely our new teacher.

4. Our school could win the tennis tournament.
