Emergency Operating Procedures - Revision 1 Update 1

The document outlines the Emergency Operating Procedures (EOP) for the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant's Units 3 and 4 with RBMK-1000 reactors, approved in 1983. It details expected operator actions in response to TG-5 and TG-6 trips, as well as transformer failures, emphasizing the importance of restoring power and the necessary checks and procedures to follow. The document also warns against attempting to start damaged turbines and provides guidance for maintaining reactor operations during emergencies.

EMERGENCY OPERATING PROCEDURES (EOP)

REVISION 1
Operation of Chernobyl NPP Units 3 and 4 with RBMK-1000 reactors

1983
Contents
TG-5 TRIP .....................................................................................................................................3
TG-6 TRIP .....................................................................................................................................4
TRANSFORMER FAILURE ..............................................................................................................5
TG-5 TRIP
Expected Operator Actions
Re-establish power to 5PA and 5PB by,

- CLOSING the PWA-3 – 5PA Relay

- CLOSING the PWB-3 – 5PB Relay
- OPENING the 5PA Relay
- OPENING the 5PB Relay
- Roll back the MCPs to a 2x3 setting.

If TG-6 has also tripped,

- Roll back the MCPs to a 2x2 setting.

If power is still not restored,

- Check that the PWA-3 Transformer is connected. There will be a green light illuminated
above the switch if the PWA-3 transformer is connected.

If power is still not restored,

- Start and connect the Emergency Diesel Generators (refer to the “remaster manual” pdf for starting
and connecting instructions)

If TG-5 is damaged (2 illuminated bearing vibration lights or more) due to an Emergency Unloading,

- Call the Turbine Technician to repair TG-5.

Do not attempt to start up a damaged turbine.

Note: During an unexpected TG-5 Trip, a Reactor Trip will occur due to the
loss of power to the 5PB relay.
TG-6 TRIP
Expected Operator Actions

Re-establish power to 5PA and 5PB by,

- CLOSING the PWA-3 – 6PA Relay

- CLOSING the PWB-3 – 6PB Relay
- OPENING the 6PA Relay
- OPENING the 6PB Relay
- Roll back the MCPs to a 3x2 setting.

If TG-5 has also tripped,

- Roll back the MCPs to a 2x2 setting.

If power is still not restored,

- Check that the PWB-3 Transformer is connected. There will be a green light illuminated
above the switch if the PWB-3 transformer is connected.

If power is still not restored,

- Start and connect the Emergency Diesel Generators (refer to the “remaster manual” pdf for starting
and connecting instructions).

If TG-6 is damaged (2 illuminated bearing vibration lights or more) due to an Emergency Unloading,

- Call the Turbine Technician to repair TG-6.

Do not attempt to start up a damaged turbine.

Note: During an unexpected TG-6 Trip, a Reactor Power Excursion may occur
due to loss of core flow.
Note: An Automatic Reactor Trip may occur as a result of the Reactor Power
Excursion.
STARTUP TRANSFORMER FAILURE
Expected Operator Actions
If TG-5 and TG-6 are not connected to the relays,

- Start and Connect DG-1, DG-2, and DG-3.

- Ensure the PWA/B relays are connected. These are essential for the DGs to power the
relays.
- Roll back the MCPs to a 1x1 setting.

If faster core cooling is desired,

- Start SAOR-1 Left and Right-side Injection.

- Start SAOR-2 Left and Right-side Injection.

If TG-5 and TG-6 are providing power to the relays, no operator action is
required.
The transformer failure must be waited out, there is nothing operators can do
to manually fix it.

Even during a transformer failure, it is possible to start the reactor after it is tripped. To achieve this,

- Ensure core flow is greater than 10,000 m3/h on each loop by starting SAOR injection.
- Pull rods as normal.
- Stabilize reactor power at 1000mw.
- Run up turbines as normal, 2000RPM or more is required.
- Ensure both AUX buses are on.
- Power 5PA/B 6PA/B relays as normal.

If a 2x2 pump configuration can be established,

- Disable SAOR pumps.

- Adjust steam load or reactor power as needed to maintain a 2x2 pump configuration.
