Welcome and Announcements
One: The Peace of Christ be with you.
All: And also with you.
One: Please share that peace with one another.
GATHERING AROUND THE WORD
Call to Worship
One: This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
All: I thank you that you have answered me and have become my
salvation.
One: Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
All: We bless you from the house of the Lord.
One: Let us worship God!
Prayer of Adoration
Righteous God, as we celebrate Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem,
we know where the journey leads. We give thanks that you would willingly
give so much of yourself so that we might know hope, and love, and
salvation. Glory be to you, O God, for your loving sacrifice. In the days
ahead, as we witness the deep night of your death, help us to remember
your presence in its midst and hope for the resurrection dawn to come.
Amen.

*Hymn
Hosana, Loud Hosana
Hosanna, loud hosanna, The little children sang;
Through pillared court and temple The joyful anthem rang.
To Jesus, who had blessed them Close folded to His breast,
The children sang their praises, The simplest and the best.
From Olivet they followed 'Mid an exultant crowd,
The victor palm branch waving, And chanting clear and loud;
The Lord of earth and heaven Ride on in lowly state,
Nor scorned that little children Should on His bidding wait.
“Hosanna in the highest!” That ancient song we sing,
For Christ is our Redeemer, The Lord of heaven our King.
O may we ever praise Him With heart and life and voice,
And in His blissful presence Eternally rejoice.
Prayer of Confession
Eternal God of mercy, hear us as we confess our sin. Daily we awaken to
the new life you give us, yet we fail to be thankful for the rest that we have
received. Moments await our decision to serve you, yet time passes away
as we think only of ourselves. Our routine affords us the chance to minister
to others, yet we are absorbed with our own self-improvement. The day is
soon passed; it has been much the same as the others. Forgive us for
casting aside the precious time that you give us each day.
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon
One: Hear these words of assurance: Even though Jesus was in the form of
God, he “did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited.”
Rather, “he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of
3
death—even death on a cross.” He died for us, so that we might have
life and approach God’s throne of judgment cleansed of our sin. In Christ
we are forgiven!
All: Together we are the Body of Christ. Thanks be to God!

First Gospel Reading
Luke 19:28-40
After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he
had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives,
he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as
you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and
bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The
Lord needs it.’” 32 So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told
them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you
untying the colt?” 34 They said, “The Lord needs it.” 35 Then they brought it to
Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 As he
rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was now
approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the
disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power
that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of
the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” 39 Some of the
Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” 40
He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”

New Testament Reading
Philippians 2:5-11
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in
the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited,
7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in human likeness.
And being found in human form, 8 he humbled himself and became obedient to
the point of death—even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God also highly exalted
him and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of
Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11
and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God
the Father.

I love you, Lord and I lift my voice
to worship you. O my soul rejoice!
Take joy, my King, in what you hear.
May it be a sweet, sweet sound in your ear. x2
Second Gospel Reading
Luke 23:1-49
Then the assembly rose as a body and brought Jesus before Pilate. 2 They began
to accuse him, saying, “We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to
pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.” 3 Then
Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” He answered, “You say so.” 4
Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no basis for an
accusation against this man.” 5 But they were insistent and said, “He stirs up the
people by teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to this
5
place.” 6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. 7 And
when he learned that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him off to Herod,
who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. 8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very
glad, for he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard
about him and was hoping to see him perform some sign. 9 He questioned him at
some length, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10 The chief priests and the scribes
stood by, vehemently accusing him. 11 Even Herod with his soldiers treated him
with contempt and mocked him; then he put an elegant robe on him, and sent him
back to Pilate. 12 That same day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other;
before this they had been enemies. 13 Pilate then called together the chief priests,
the leaders, and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one
who was perverting the people; and here I have examined him in your presence
and have not found this man guilty of any of your charges against him. 15 Neither
has Herod, for he sent him back to us. Indeed, he has done nothing to deserve
death. 16 I will therefore have him flogged and release him.” 18 Then they all
shouted out together, “Away with this fellow! Release Barabbas for us!” 19 (This
was a man who had been put in prison for an insurrection that had taken place in
the city, and for murder.) 20 Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them
again; 21 but they kept shouting, “Crucify, crucify him!” 22 A third time he said to
them, “Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no ground for the sentence
of death; I will therefore have him flogged and then release him.” 23 But they kept
urgently demanding with loud shouts that he should be crucified; and their voices
prevailed. 24 So Pilate gave his verdict that their demand should be granted. 25 He
released the man they asked for, the one who had been put in prison for insurrection
and murder, and he handed Jesus over as they wished. 26 As they led him away,
they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they
laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27 A great number of
the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their
breasts and wailing for him. 28 But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of
Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29
For the days are surely coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the
wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ 30 Then they will begin
6
to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us’; and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 For if they do
this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?” 32 Two others also,
who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him. 33 When they came
to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals,
one on his right and one on his left. 34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them; for
they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35
And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, “He
saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!” 36
The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37 and
saying, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” 38 There was also an
inscription over him, “This is the King of the Jews.” 39 One of the criminals who
were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, “Are you not the Messiah? Save
yourself and us!” 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, “Do you not fear God, since
you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed have been
condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man
has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come
into your kingdom.” 43 He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in
Paradise.”44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until
three in the afternoon, 45 while the sun’s light failed; and the curtain of the temple
was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your
hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, he breathed his last. 47 When the
centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, “Certainly this man
was innocent.” 48 And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this
spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts. 49
But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,
stood at a distance, watching these things.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD
*Affirmation of Faith The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in
Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead,
and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the
dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the
Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the
dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion
of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life
everlasting. Amen
*Hymn
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God
A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing;
Our helper He amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God’s own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He,
Lord Sabaoth His Name, From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
And though this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim, We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
8
That word above all earthly powers, No thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours Through Him who with us sideth;
Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also;
The body they may kill, God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily

GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD
*Hymn
Come, Thou Almighty King
Come, Thou Almighty King, Help us Thy name to sing,
Help us to praise: Father, all-glorious,
O’er all victorious, Come, and reign over us,
Ancient of Days.
9
Come, Thou Incarnate Word, Gird on Thy mighty sword,
Our prayer attend: Come, and Thy people bless,
And give Thy word success; Spirit of holiness,
On us descend.
Come, Holy Comforter, Thy sacred witness bear
In this glad hour: Thou who almighty art,
Now rule in every heart, And ne’er from us depart,
Spirit of power.
To Thee, great One in Three, The highest praises be,
Hence evermore! Thy sovereign majesty
May we in glory see, And to eternity
Love and adore.
