Reflection Worksheet

The document explains the concept of reflection in coordinate geometry, detailing how to reflect points across the x-axis and y-axis with corresponding formulas. It provides examples for each type of reflection, illustrating how the coordinates change. Additionally, it includes practice problems for further understanding of the reflection transformations.

Reflection Across the X-Axis and Y-Axis

In coordinate geometry, reflection is a transformation that flips a figure over a specific line,
such as the x-axis or y-axis. Below are the rules and formulas for reflections.

1. Reflection Across the X-Axis

When a point (x, y) is reflected across the x-axis, the x-coordinate remains the same, but the
y-coordinate changes sign.

Formula: (x, y) → (x, -y)

Example: If a point A(3, 5) is reflected across the x-axis, its new coordinates will be A'(3, -5).

2. Reflection Across the Y-Axis

When a point (x, y) is reflected across the y-axis, the y-coordinate remains the same, but the
x-coordinate changes sign.

Formula: (x, y) → (-x, y)

Example: If a point B(4, -2) is reflected across the y-axis, its new coordinates will be B'(-4, -
2).

Practice Problems
1. Reflect the point (6, -3) across the x-axis.

2. Reflect the point (-5, 7) across the y-axis.

3. Reflect the point (2, 4) across the x-axis.

4. Reflect the point (-8, -6) across the y-axis.

5. Given triangle ABC with A(1,2), B(3,4), and C(5,6), find its reflection across the x-axis.
