This assignment should take an average student who is up-to-date with tutorial work
approximately 1 hours

quotation marks and in italics, with a full reference to the source directly underneath the

Assignment Regulations

1. Submission/return deadline: Thursday 14/12/2023.


2. Assignment submitted after the published deadline without an extenuating
circumstances claim will receive a ZERO grade.
3. This is an individual Coursework.
4. All Assignment must be submitted as above. Under no circumstances can they be
accepted by the lecturer.

Specification

a) Write a short note on the following usability evaluation methods:

i) Summative Evaluation techniques


ii) Formative evaluation techniques

(b) You have been asked to design an application for the next generation of mobile
phones. The precise technology has yet to be decided upon. The aim of the system
is to enable users to book tickets for sports events and for concerts using their
phone. Briefly explain how you would go about designing the interface to this system
and how you would conduct formative evaluation during the initial stages of
development (Hint: you do not need to design the interface itself, simply describe the
techniques you would use during the early stages of development).

(c) You are assigned with a task to Interview either (i) a person you know over 65 or
(ii) a child you know under 16 about their experience, attitude and expectations of
computers. What factors would you take into account if you were designing a
website aimed at this persons?

(d) Think of any two examples of user interfaces as follows; i) One that you consider
a good design and ii) One that you consider a bad design. your interfaces could be a

desktop software, web applications, smartphone apps, consumer devices, car
dashboards, building entrances, traffic intersections, etc.

i) describe the purpose of the interface and its intended users.


ii) analyze its good and bad points of usability with reference to all the
dimensions of usability discussed in the lecture: i. learnability ii.
visibility iii. efficiency iv. errors

Grading Criteria

a) Low marks will be awarded to solutions showing knowledge and understanding of


the concept, but do not provede at least one example where necessary.

b) Medium marks will be awarded to good solutions showing the ability of the
student to apply the abstractions to the concrete problem posed, with a good
example where necessary.

c) High marks will be awarded to students who produce solutions demonstrating a


detailed and critical understanding of the concept. Complete, optimised and
effective solution which is consistent throughout.
