A SEMI-DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN ENGLISH 9

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:
 identify and classify statements as descriptive or prescriptive;
 construct descriptive and prescriptive statements based on given topics; and
 realize the importance of value judgement.

B. Review
Group Game: Conquer the Board-dom!
Directions: The class will be divided into four groups with color sticks assigned to them. During the
game, different statements will be shown in the screen and you will identify each statement whether it
is claim or counterclaim. The first group to raise their color stick will be the one to answer. Once you
get the correct answer, you will be given a chance to roll the dice and move your token according to
the number at the top of the dice. If you don't get the right answer, the other group will have the
chance to answer. The first group to reach the finish line will have the prize.

1. The defendant failed to complete the project within the agreed timeline, causing financial
losses.
2. The plaintiff did not provide the necessary documents on time, which delayed the project.

4. The plaintiff was texting while driving, which contributed to the accident.
5. The company violated my copyright by using my design without permission.
6. The design was a common pattern available in public domain, and no copyright was
infringed.
7. The landlord failed to make necessary repairs, making the apartment uninhabitable.
8. The tenant caused damage to the property, leading to the current poor condition.
9. The employer wrongfully terminated me without any valid reason.
10. The employee was fired for violating company policies multiple times.
Guide Question:
 How do you determine whether the statement is claim or counterclaim?
 Why do you think it is important for us to know how to identify valid and invalid
arguments?

C. Motivation
Directions: The class will be divided into four groups. In each group, there will be a topic assigned
that will be selected randomly. In a bond paper, write their view, stand, or opinion about the photo
presented.

Guide Question:
1. Do you think the situations in the pictures are fair or unfair? Why?

D. Discussion
Value judgement is a judgement of the rightness or wrongness of something, or someone based on a
comparison or other relativity or of the usefulness of something or someone. Also, value judgments
express an opinion about whether something is good, bad, right, or wrong based on a certain set of
values.

Example of positive and negative value judgements:


• That’s good. • That’s obligatory.
• That’s bad. • That’s admirable.
• That’s wonderful. • That’s shameful.
• That’s a bummer. • That’s despicable
• That’s not right. • That’s shouldn’t be.
• That’s sick. • That’s okay.
• That’s not fair. • That’s just wrong

Descriptive – describes things as they are, without making judgments or suggesting changes. Its
purpose is to observe, to record, and to explain facts objectively.
Example: Many people drive slightly over the speed limit on highways.

Prescriptive – provides rules or guidelines on how things should be. It suggests improvements, sets
standards, or enforces norms.
Example: Drivers should always follow the speed limit to stay safe and avoid fines

More example statements of descriptive and prescriptive.

The U.S. invaded Iraq. The U.S. shouldn’t have invaded Iraq.
Jeremy is a student. Jeremy is an excellent student.
Sally is frightened. It’s okay for Sally to be frightened.
The doctor accidentally killed the patient. The doctor should not be blamed for
accidentally killing the patient.
Our teacher takes forever to return homework. It’s not fair of our teacher to take forever to
return homework.

F. Application
Directions: The students will be divided into four groups. Each group will compose five statements
about descriptive and prescriptive concepts. They will select a topic from a randomized box provided
by the teacher.

Directions: Classify and analyze each statement. Write down whether it is a descriptive or
prescriptive.

4. Eating vegetables is good for your health. (Tricky)
