Notes • The synergistic effects of various combinations of corrosive gases make the determination of
severity levels complex.
• The effects of elevated temperature and high or variable relative humidity may cause the
acceleration of corrosion by gaseous contaminants and will impact the corrosion rates.
• The differing levels of exposure to harsh environmental conditions can reduce the equipment
Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF).
• The Tricon system is not designed for prolonged exposure to particulate corrosive elements such
as Sulphur. Under such conditions, provide suitable protection, such as purged air cabinets with
appropriate filtration systems, to ensure that the Tricon hardware is not exposed to particulate
based corrosive elements.
• The use of conformal coating does not stop the corrosive effects of harsh environmental
conditions.
• For equipment installations in harsh environmental conditions, Schneider Electric suggests that
customers obtain the guidance of an environmental chemical or biological specialist.
The following Tricon CX equipment has been tested for mixed flowing gas exposure.
• 3009X, Main Processor, 256 Mb
• 3506X, DI, 24 VDC, Supervised, TMR, 32 pts.

This list describes the ability of the Triconex Sequence of Events (SOE) Recorder to capture events from
Model 3506X Supervised DI Modules:
• For every point on every module, the first event will be captured without loss.
• For any one point, the second event will be captured without loss if the time since the first event is at least
6 milliseconds.
• With simultaneous events on all 32 points of a module, a second set of simultaneous events will be
captured without loss if the time between events is at least 52 milliseconds.
• Continuous throughput of events on a module can be maintained without loss if there is no more than one
event every 30 milliseconds, on average, and no more than 8 events per control program scan.
• Continuous throughput of events on a system can be maintained without loss if there are no more than 32
events per control program scan.

•All the DO Select Switches on the FET must be down when using the Model 3809X AO Module. Ensure that the switches are in the correct positions before applying
power to the system and after making any configuration changes (See Figure 31: Field External Termination (FET) Connector with DO Select Switches Down).
Usage considerations for the Model 3809X AO Module:
• Voter Diagnostics rely on current flowing through the voter. If there is no current flow, or very low current
flow, diagnostics will not run. Examples of this are:
− Any point where the field device is disconnected
− Any point that consistently draws less than 4 mA
− Whenever the field power supply is missing
If any of the conditions above can persist for an extended period, consider the following:
− Implementing additional periodic proof testing
− Using alternative field devices, or otherwise ensuring that a minimum of 4 mA flows from the F+ to the
F– terminals
− Installing a shorting link on all unused points
− After changing unused point(s) to used, wait five minutes for the voter diagnostic to execute.

FETs are required for installing I/O modules in the Model 8131X I/O Expansion Chassis and for connecting ETPs to the I/O modules in the Model 8131X I/O Expansion
Chassis.
b
When a module becomes active during an hourly board switch, accuracy can be decreased momentarily to <3% of FSR. Consider adding debouncing to your application
to reduce the chances of spurious events.
c
During insertion of a spare module, an additional deviation of up to 0.35 mA is possible for up to 40 seconds. This equates to ±0.431 mA without HART and ±0.488 mA
with HART.
Usage considerations for the Model 3902X UIO Module:
• Ensure the UIO point is configured as a type compatible with the field device before you connect the field
device to the system.
• Before you change a configured point to a different type, reconfigure the Physical Location of the point to
Memory and perform a Download Changes or a Download All. After the Download Changes or Download
all is complete, change the configured point to the new point type and perform a second Download
Changes or Download All to finalize the changes.
• During a Download All from TriStation 1131, it is possible that the module will report "Loop device failed"
warnings. The alarm will clear after the Download All is complete and will not affect normal operation of the
system.
• After changing unused point(s) to used, wait five minutes for the voter diagnostic to execute.
Note: For a description of voter diagnostics, please see the “OVD (Output Voter Diagnostics)” section in
the Planning and Installation Guide for Tricon v9-v11 Systems.
• Voter Diagnostics rely on current flowing through the voter. If there is no current flow or very low current
flow, diagnostics will not run. Examples of this are:
− Unsupervised Digital Inputs that are Off
− Unsupervised Digital Outputs that are Off
− Any point where the Field Device is disconnected
− Any point that consistently draws less than 4 mA
− Whenever the Field Power Supply is missing
− Unused points
If any of the conditions above can persist for an extended period, consider the following:
− Implementing additional periodic proof testing
− Using supervised Digital Inputs
− Using supervised Digital Outputs
Tricon CX Products Addendum to Tricon User Guides 89
Chapter 2 Product Specifications 9791042-002, Rev 0.0
− Using alternative field devices, or otherwise ensuring that a minimum of 4 mA flows from the F+ to the
F– terminals
Usage considerations for DI points on the Model 3902X UIO Module:
• Input wiring resistance for digital inputs must not exceed 130 ohms.
• Loop impedance for digital inputs must not exceed 150 ohms.
• For supervised DI points, install Rseries and Rparallel end of line resistors.
• Set the R Adjust (R_ADJ) in TriStation to allow for wiring impedance for supervised DI points to allow
reliable supervision and field fault detection.
• DI points are contact sensing and designed to detect an open or closed contact between the F+ terminal
and ground. This means that shorts to ground from the F+ terminal will be interpreted as a closed contact
(logic 1 (TRUE) in the TriStation Application).
Usage considerations for DO points on the Model 3902X UIO Module:
• For DO points that are ON, the field device should draw no more than 50 mA from the UIO module. The
actual current drawn will depend on the load impedance, but if the field device attempts to draw more than
55 mA, the module will attempt to regulate the current to 55 mA. The module will also declare a FIELD
FAULT if the field device attempts to draw more than 51 mA.
• Use supervised digital outputs for energized-to-trip systems.
• If digital output points are not supervised, field faults will not be detected for outputs that are off. Consider
this when you determine the periodic proof testing interval for points that are off for long periods of time.
• When configuring digital output points in TriStation 1131, use the following thresholds:
OPEN_THRESHOLD: 1350 Ohms, SHORT_THRESHOLD: 130 Ohms
• This table identifies the maximum supported load resistance for the corresponding DO current.
Loop Current Load Resistance
(mA) (ohms)
50 270
40 350
30 550
20 900
10 1800
8 2250
• The module expects a constant load for DO outputs that are on. Varying loads may cause voter
diagnostics to fail, for example, fans. You should apply additional filtering if you drive such loads.
Alternatively, you can disable voter diagnostics for the module. If you disable voter diagnostics, you should
conduct additional safety analysis, which may require additional periodic proof testing.
• The module will periodically source a supervision current of 2 mA ±0.5 mA for 250 ms to allow diagnostics
to run on supervised DO outputs that are off.

• The DO Select Switch on the FET must be up for Digital Outputs and down for all other point types. Ensure
that the switches are in the correct positions before applying power to the system and after making any
configuration changes.

HART Communication
Highway Addressable Remote Transducer (HART) is an open-standard master/slave protocol used for
communicating digital information between HART-enabled field devices and the Tricon controller. It transmits
both analog and digital data simultaneously, making it possible to transfer information such as device status,
diagnostics, and measured or calculated values.
HART technology increases plant availability and improves performance, reduces maintenance costs, and
helps improve regulatory compliance.
HART is supported on the following modules:
• Model 3723X AI + HART
• Model 3809X AO + HART
• Model 3902X UIO
• Model 4355X TCM
• Model 4610X UCM
The maximum number of HART field devices you can configure in a Tricon 11.3.x or later CX controller
depends on the I/O module you are using.

Notes: • A Model 4355X TCM or 4610X UCM configured to support HART cannot report HART failures to
the Enhanced Diagnostic Monitor if a Model 4701X IMSS or a Model 4703X IMFF is not in the
IM-A slot.
• Schneider Electric recommends that you configure only one TCM or UCM to use HART. If you
configure more than one communication module to use the HART protocol, HART
communication speed will be reduced.

Planning Power for a Tricon CX System
This section explains how to determine the logic power consumption and cooling requirements of a Tricon CX
controller.
Data in this section is based on a fault condition where only one of the redundant power sources is operational.
Under normal operating conditions, both power sources share the load.
Determining Logic Power
Logic power refers to the maximum power needed to power all the modules in the chassis. This calculation
assumes that only one of the redundant power sources is operational. Under normal operating conditions, both
power sources share the load.
The “Logic Power of Tricon CX Modules” table identifies the logic power for each module. To determine the
logic power needed for each chassis, add:
• Maximum logic power for all primary modules in the chassis
• Maximum logic power for all hot-spare modules in the chassis

b
Hot-spare Digital Output Modules consume less field power than primary Digital Output Modules.
Note 1: Field Power will be dissipated on the DTA or ETP, with or without a hot-spare module.
Determining Cooling Requirements
Cooling requirements are determined by calculating the heat load dissipated by all the modules in the system
cabinet.
To determine cooling requirements, add:
• Maximum logic power and field power for all primary modules
• Maximum logic power and field power for all hot-spare modules
For the logic power values and the field power values, see the “Logic Power of Tricon CX Modules” table and
the “Field Power of Tricon CX I/O Modules” table.
For more on heat management, see the “Heat Management Instructions” section. Contact Schneider Electric
for further assistance with cooling needs.

Security Considerations
When using the Tricon CX in your environment, you should assess the security threats to your system within
the context of the overall plant architecture, any applicable standards, industry best practices, and your
corporate practices. This section contains guidelines for securing file backups, access to controllers, networks,
and project files.
Note: Schneider Electric highly recommends that you register with the Global Customer Support (GCS)
center to receive the latest information (by e-mail) about security vulnerabilities that may be found in
Triconex products. Also, if you discover a security vulnerability in a Triconex product, please
immediately contact the GCS center for assistance and further instructions.
Please see the Planning and Installation Guide for Tricon v9-v11 Systems for detailed guidelines in the
following areas:
• Workstation and File Security
• Controller Security
• Network Security
− Open Network
− Safety Peer-to-Peer Network
The following guidelines are in addition to those in the Planning and Installation Guide for Tricon v9-v11
Systems.
Additional Workstation and File Security
• If you use secure communication for TriStation-to-Controller connections, manage the X.509 certificates
according to the guidance in this section.
Additional Controller Security
• You can enable Enhanced Diagnostic Monitor (EnDM) auto discovery if you determine there is no (or low)
impact to EnDM by doing so. Auto discovery uses multicast messages and shares node details—such as
node name, node number, and IP address—that could be used to profile the system. For improved security
assurance, it is recommended that you disable auto discovery before commissioning.
I/O Processor (IOP) Bus Security
• Use three independent, closed (no foreign network nodes) physical networks for the leg A, leg B, and leg C
I/O buses.
• If you use any interposing switches, turn off unused ports.
• Turn off unused Out ports on Model 4703X I/O Bus Interface Module Fiber-Fiber (IMFFs), using TriStation
1131.
HART Security
• Use HART DTMs from reputable manufacturers.
• Allow only authorized users access to PCs that run HART DTMs.
• Use one or more of the following methods to block Tricon CX communication modules from passing
through writes from HART Universal Commands to HART-enabled field devices:
Tricon CX Products Addendum to Tricon User Guides 100
Chapter 3 Installation and Maintenance 9791042-002, Rev 0.0
− Put the keyswitch on the main chassis in Run mode or Remote mode.
− Give HART-enabled field devices Read Only access in an access control list. For more information,
see “Controlling Access to the TCM or UCM” in the TriStation 1131 Developer’s Guide.
− Enable the HART Lock Configuration Change property for points connected to HART-enabled field
devices.
Note that some manufacturers of HART-enabled field devices support special commands that will not be
blocked by the methods above.
• To fully protect HART-enabled devices from accidental or malicious writes, use the physical, hardware
switch on your device to enable write protection. If your device does not have a switch or button to enable
write protection, contact the manufacturer to find out how to fully protect the device.
• Enable secure HART communication to use encryption and self-signed X.509 digital certificates for
communication with the Triconex Controller Device Type Manager (DTM) and the communication modules
in the controller. For more information, see "Secure Communication" in the TriStation 1131 Developer's
Guide.
• Enable Enhanced Security in your TriStation 1131 project file (.pt2).
• Monitor configuration changes and the health of field devices, using the Enhanced Diagnostic Monitor, by
configuring the following properties in HART-enabled tagnames.
− HART Monitor Configuration Change—allows the point to monitor HART configuration changes in the
field device
− HART Monitor Device Health—allows the point to monitor the health of the HART-enabled field device
X.509 Certificate Security
• Generate X.509 certificates on a PC other than the maintenance PC.
• Keep X.509 certificates in a secure location and limit access to only authorized personnel, per
organizationally defined policy.
• Download the X.509 certificate from TriStation 1131 for the first time after ensuring the network is closed to
unknown nodes and communication is not being snooped.
See the TriStation 1131 Developer’s Guide for detailed guidelines on secure communication.
Product Disposal
• At the end of the product’s use, follow your organization’s disposal instructions.
• Erase the control program from the controller by downloading any of the sample control programs from the
TriStation 1131 sample projects. This action will also erase x509 certificates, if used.
• Before disposing of PCs, delete TriStation 1131 project files. Consider using a data destruction program to
erase data from the hard drives.

Application-Specific Installation Guidelines
This section includes guidelines for installing the Tricon CX controller in application-specific locations. It also
includes lists of Tricon CX products approved for use in application-specific locations.
Class I Division 2 Hazardous Locations
For North American hazardous location applications, the controller and associated equipment must be
mounted in an enclosure that provides protection from fire and from personal injury resulting from access to
live parts. The enclosure must require access via a tool, and if non-metallic, have the appropriate flammability
rating.
Installations in the United States shall comply with the relevant requirements of the National Electrical Code®
(ANSI/NFPA-70 (NEC®).
Installations in Canada shall comply with the relevant requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code (CSA
C22.1).
The replacement of fuses, I/O modules, main processors, communication modules, I/O interface modules, or
I/O interface cables must not be attempted unless the area is known to be free of ignitable gas concentrations.
All communication cabling connected to the main processors and communication modules must be
nonincendive as described in Appendix A, Nonincendive Circuit Parameters. Communication cabling that
extends through a hazardous area must be certified as being nonincendive. Any signal going to or through a
hazardous atmosphere must use hazardous location protection, such as an IS Barrier.
In North America, the field signals used with nonincendive external termination panels are certified for Class I,
Division 2, Groups C and D.
WARNING
You must take additional explosion protection measures for field circuits when the field apparatus is in a
hazardous area.
Only these components, which are approved for use in Class I Division 2 hazardous locations, can be used:

Connecting Alarm Wiring for the Model 8120X Main Chassis
The Model 8120X Main Chassis includes redundant alarm contacts; each with a normally closed contact.
Typically, alarm wiring is connected to a local or remote annunciator. These devices can be wired in parallel
with the alarm wiring so that the designated alarm goes off when either contact signals an alarm condition. See
the Conducted Susceptibility Compliance section for cable length limitations.
The Program Alarm indicator is lit when the control program detects a specified condition and sets the
MP.SET_PROG_ALARM_ON attribute to True.

Heat Management Instructions
When mounting Tricon CX chassis in vented or unvented enclosures, you and the integration engineer are
responsible for providing for sufficient heat management. To establish cooling requirements, determine the
total amount of heat to be generated for dissipation by the following components in the enclosure:
• All modules installed
• All additional heat-generating devices
For optimal performance, the inlet temperature into the screened area at the bottom of each chassis should be
below 95° F (35° C).
For the calculated values of heat dissipation of each module, see the specifications for each module in Product
Specifications or in Planning Power for a Tricon CX System. The amount of dissipated heat affects the type of
heat management techniques appropriate for the system.
The following sections provide requirements and guidelines for managing the heat in your Tricon CX system.
Mandatory Requirements for Managing Heat
All enclosure installations must meet these requirements:
• The temperature at the base of the main chassis should not be greater than 140° F (60° C).
• The temperature at the base of I/O chassis should not be greater than 149° F (65° C).
• There should be at least 3.5 inches (8.9 centimeters) of space between chassis.
• The airflow through or around the chassis can be characterized by the vertically upward airflow measured
at the chassis using an anemometer or some other air velocity sensor.
Recommended Configurations for Managing Heat in 2000 mm x 800 mm x 800 mm Cabinets
This section describes a thermal analysis done for a 2000 mm x 800 mm x 800 mm cabinet with two doors. It
identifies recommended cabinet configurations depending on the ambient temperature and the heat to be
dissipated.
You can use other cabinet sizes and heat-management techniques, but the mandatory requirements must be
met, taking into consideration the total cabinet power dissipation, heat management options, and operating
environment.
Descriptions of Cabinet Configurations
Config # Description
1 Natural convection cooling. This can be achieved with 13 in x 13 in (330 mm x 330 mm) louvers at
the top and bottom of both doors
2 Forced air cooling with >10 CFM of minimum air flow around each chassis. This can be achieved
with a 150 CFM roof-mounted fan and the louvers described in configuration #1. The minimum
velocity at the top of any chassis should be >0.1 m/s.
3 Forced air cooling with >15 CFM of minimum balanced air flow through each chassis. This can be
achieved using door louvers, an air plenum, and a low-flow 150 CFM roof-mounted fan (or
redundant fans). The minimum velocity at the top of any chassis should be >0.2 m/s.

Guidelines for Cooling
The chassis that generates the least amount of heat or that is the most temperature-sensitive should be the
lowest chassis in a multi-chassis installation. The chassis that generates the most amount of heat or that is the
least temperature-sensitive should be the highest chassis.
Choosing Clearances
Schneider Electric recommends the following clearances:
• Minimum of 5.25 inches (13.3 centimeters) of space between the enclosure panels and sides of the
chassis
• Minimum of 3.75 inches (9.5 centimeters) of space between the front of each chassis and the enclosure
• Minimum of 7 inches (17.8 centimeters) of space between the bottom of the chassis and the bottom of the
enclosure
• Minimum of 3.5 inches (8.9 centimeters) of space between the top of each chassis and any obstructions to
airflow
When the ambient temperature of the enclosure is around 72° F (22° C), these clearances allow for adequate
convection cooling of all chassis and create an acceptable inlet air temperature (below 140° F, 60° C) into the
highest chassis in the enclosure.
Up to 40% of the volume created by these clearances may be consumed with non-heat-generating equipment
such as cables, structural components of the enclosure, and wiring panels, provided that each component
remains at least 1.75 inches (4.5 centimeters) away from the bottom and top of the chassis and does not block
airflow through the chassis.
If the clearances between the enclosure panels and chassis sides and front are reduced, the installation should
ensure that airflow is not restricted to any chassis and that the maximum allowable temperatures into and
through the chassis are not exceeded. The open space between the enclosure walls and the fronts and sides
of all the chassis minimizes the direct flow of heated air exhaust from the bottom chassis up through the higher
chassis.

Directing Airflow
The installation should ensure that forced airflow is through, and not around, the chassis. Directing airflow with
fans in an eight-chassis (four chassis in the front and four chassis in the rear) cabinet is particularly challenging
due to the column effect caused by the fans. This issue can be mitigated by using a plenum, as recommended
in the “Recommended Configurations for Managing Heat in 2000 mm x 800 mm x 800 mm Cabinets” table.
Using Sensors
Using temperature and fan airflow sensors ensures compliance with the chassis temperature requirements.
Sensors should be properly located at the top and bottom of each chassis to notify you if the enclosure fans or
facility air-conditioning fail. In the event of either failure occurring, the inlet air temperature to the chassis and
the temperature rise within the chassis may exceed the allowable maximum temperatures.

I/O Bus Address of Chassis
The address plug on a chassis sets the chassis number (I/O chassis) or node number (main chassis) in a
Tricon CX system.
The address of the main chassis is the node number, and can range from 1 to 254.
The address of an I/O expansion chassis can be from 1 to 15. The chassis number is used as part of the I/O
bus address, along with the slot number and the left/right position.
The address plug is installed during installation of the chassis in the enclosure.
This figure shows the location of the address plug on an I/O expansion chassis.

Connecting I/O Bus Wiring
The Tricon CX supports a TMR I/O bus connection with the following interface modules.
Supported I/O Bus Interface Modules
Model Description
4701X I/O Bus Interface Module Serial-Serial (IMSS), RS-485 serial
communication, up to 100 feet (30 meters)
4703X I/O Bus Interface Module Fiber-Fiber (IMFF); Single Mode (SM)
communication up to 12.4 miles (20 kilometers) or Multi-Mode
(MM) communication up to 1800 feet (550 meters)
The I/O bus cables are connected directly to the I/O bus interface modules.
The Model 4703X IMFF module can be used to convert single mode to multi-mode fiber communication, and
vice versa, using different types of small form-factor pluggables (SFPs).
CAUTION
POTENTIAL FOR EYE INJURY
• Use only Class 1 Laser SFPS.
• Do not stare at the open end of the fiber connection.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in eye injury.
When using the daisy chain network topology, the In Link connectors (on the I/O Bus interface modules) are
connected to the MP network (on the main chassis) or to the Out Link connectors (on the I/O Bus interface
modules) of the previous I/O chassis, and the Out Link connectors are connected to the next I/O chassis in the
daisy chain.
When using the star network topology, network switches are required for point-to-point cable connection to the
In Link connectors on the I/O bus interface modules.
For I/O bus security and safety, follow these guidelines:
• Use three independent, closed (no foreign network nodes) physical networks for the leg A, leg B, and leg C
I/O buses.
• If you use any interposing switches, turn off unused ports.
• Turn off unused Out ports on Model 4703X IMFFs, using TriStation 1131.

Key Plates for I/O Modules and Key Bases for I/O Cables
In the Model 8131X I/O Expansion Chassis, Field External Termination (FET) connectors are required for
installing I/O modules and for connecting interface cables from ETPs. Each FET connector contains a key
plate and a key base.
Figure 51: Key Plate and Key Base on FET
Legend
A Key plate
B Key base
The key plate is next to the module socket and is uniquely slotted to allow installation of only compatible I/O
modules. All modules of a particular type are identically keyed to match the key plate on compatible FETs.
The key base is installed around the I/O cable connector and is uniquely slotted to allow connection of only
compatible cables. All cables of a particular type are identically keyed to match the key base on compatible
FETs.
If you try to install a module in an incorrect slot, the module will not slide all the way into the chassis. Do not
apply force to overcome the obstruction. The obstruction could be the key plate on an incompatible FET.
Always follow the complete module installation procedure.
For information on FET and I/O module compatibility, see Determining Field Termination Options by Module
Model Number.

Configuring the MP Node Setting
The main chassis address plug, on the front of the main chassis, identifies the node of the controller on a
network. The factory setting is node 1. The setting can be from 1 to 254. You must ensure the node setting is
configured in TriStation 1131. TCMs and UCMs automatically obtain the node setting from the MP.
Installing Modules
This procedure explains how to install a module. It contains steps to ensure the correct module gets installed.
Do not skip any of the steps because doing so increases the risk of an incorrect module being installed into the
system.
NOTICE
• Do not install more than one module at the same time. You must push the first module in and wait until
the Active indicator goes on, then install the next module.
• If you feel an obstruction while pushing a module into a slot, do not apply force to overcome the
obstruction. The obstruction could be the key plate on an incompatible FET. Key plates ensure that
modules are installed only in slots with compatible FETs. Installing the wrong type of module into a
running system can cause permanent damage and possibly a spurious trip of the application.
If you are using the SFP-based IOP bus, insert the SFP into the port on the MP, and then insert the cable into
the SFP before you insert the MP into the chassis. Insert the SFP into the socket until you feel the SFP
connector snap into place. Do not apply excessive force when inserting an SFP or fiber cable.
Before you install each module, ensure that:
• Power is available.
• Field wiring and external termination panels (ETPs) are properly connected (if applicable).
• The module to be inserted has the correct firmware version, as defined in the Tricon Product Release
Notice for your version of the system.
1. Ensure that the correct FET—one that is compatible with the I/O module—is installed in the slot (if
applicable).
2. Ensure there are no bent pins on the connector of the module to be inserted.
3. If you are installing a redundant module and the other module of the pair is already inserted, ensure that
the model number of the module and the color-code stripe are identical to the already-inserted module.
4. Insert the module into the slot and push it until it is firmly seated. Tighten the retractable fasteners of the
module to 10 inch-pounds.
Digital Output Field Wiring Precautions
When installing field wiring for Digital Output Modules, Schneider Electric recommends that you do not make
parallel connections or series connections to digital output points. These types of connections can cause the
commanded state and the measured state of points to disagree, resulting in Load alarms and limited
effectiveness of Output Voter Diagnostics (OVD).
For more information about OVD, see “Disabling Output Voter Diagnostics on DO Modules” in the Planning
and Installation Guide for Tricon v9-v11 Systems.

Implementation and Maintenance
This section includes information about implementation and maintenance that should be considered when
installing a Tricon CX system. To ensure maximum safety and long service, Schneider Electric recommends
that you establish a schedule for routine maintenance at the time the controller is installed and then adhere to
that schedule.
CAUTION
The Tricon CX controller can be repaired while operating. However, the integrity of the controller depends
on the operator correctly following repair procedures. If in doubt about the procedures, the operator should
take whatever steps are necessary to ensure the safety of the plant and personnel, then call Schneider
Electric for assistance in implementing the repair procedures.

Chapter 3 Installation and Maintenance 9791042-002, Rev 0.0
Checking Tricon CX Controller Power Sources
To ensure maximum availability, Tricon CX controllers typically use redundant sources to power the controller
and field circuitry. Under normal operating conditions, the required power is shared between the two power
sources. Under abnormal conditions, one of the power sources may be required to provide 100 percent of the
controller power. To verify the integrity of the power source and avoid spurious trips due to power supply
failures, you must periodically test each power source for its ability to provide power for the entire system when
the redundant source is disabled.
This procedure explains how to test the power sources used for the controller. You should perform it every six
to twelve months.
CAUTION
The following procedure should be performed only while the process under control is in an off-line or
shutdown status.
1. Take the control process offline.
2. Turn off one of the power sources and leave it off for several minutes.
3. After restoring power, repeat the test for the other power source.
4. Turn on both power sources prior to restarting the controlled process.

Chapter 4
Fault and Alarm Indicators
Indicators are lights on the front panel of each module that identify the state of the module. Each module
includes indicators that identify the general state of the module and other indicators related to the function of
the module.
The types of indicators include:
• Status indicators that identify the processing state of the module. Each module includes a Pass, Fault, and
Active indicator.
• Field power indicators that identify whether a power problem has occurred.
• Points indicators that identify whether the point is energized. (Not on Analog Input or Analog Output
Modules.)
• Communication indicators that identify the type of communication occurring. (Only on MP and
communication modules.)
Identifying Fault and Alarm Indicators
Fault indicators identify potentially serious problems with a module. Alarm conditions identify abnormal field
conditions such as loss of power or loss of communication.
If a fault or alarm indicator is on, you should consult the appropriate topic in this guide and take appropriate
action. This action may include replacing a faulty module or repairing a faulty circuit or device.
You can identify alarm and fault conditions in these ways:
• By examining the indicators on the front panel of each module and comparing the indicators with the
descriptions in this chapter.
• By using the Enhanced Diagnostic Monitor.

Part Number Cross Reference
This table identifies the external termination assembly (ETA) part number and the cable part number included
in each external termination panel (ETP) kit model that is compatible with Tricon CX I/O modules. Additionally,
the table identifies the compatible field external termination (FET) connector for each ETP.
ETP kit models that end with “F” are not RoHS compliant and contain ninety-degree interface cables that meet
FT4 flame test ratings.
ETP kit models that end with “RF” are RoHS compliant and contain ninety-degree interface cables that meet
FT4 flame test ratings.
Note: Although the standard length of all interface cables is 10 feet (3 meters), you may order any length
cable up to 90 feet (27.4 meters) in 10-foot increments by using the last two digits of the termination
panel’s model number to specify length in feet. For example, specify 9xxxX-x50F if you want a 50-
foot (15 meter) cable instead of the standard 10-foot (3-meter) cable.
For more information about interface cables, see the Field Terminations Guide for Tricon v9-v11 Systems.

Figure 57: Parameters for Tricon CX Nonincendive Communication Circuits
Note 1: FMRC-approved apparatus. The voltage (Vmax) and current (Imax) which the load device can
receive must be equal to or greater than the maximum open circuit voltage (Voc) and maximum
short circuit current (Isc) which can be delivered by the source device. In addition, the maximum
capacitance (Ci) and inductance (Li) of the load which is not prevented by circuit components from
providing a stored energy charge to the field wiring (for example, a diode across a winding to clamp
an inductive discharge) and the capacitance and inductance of the interconnecting wiring, must be
equal to or less than the capacitance (Ca) or inductance (La) that can be driven by the source
device.
