Arduino-Based RADAR System Using Ultrasonic Sensor

Introduction : Radar (radio detection and range) systems are important in detecting the distance,
angle and velocity of objects. The project presents a simplified radar model that uses an Arduino
microcontroller and an ultrasonic sensor, providing engineering students a practical
understanding of object detection principles. Mainly this consists of only the sensors without any
cameras that requires more energy, it lags the time for image capture and processing whereas the
sensors will give the instant feedback.
Objectives :
 Develop a functional RADAR prototype capable of scanning overall 360-degree area.
 Detecting foreign objects and displaying their distance and angle using an LCD.
 Reduces the risk of soldiers during undesirable environment conditions.
 To improve the intelligence in all the three defense sectors.
Methodology in Block/Flowcharts/Details bullet point cum paragraph:
1. Signal Emission: The Arduino sends a 5V signal to the trig pin of the HC-SR04
ultrasonic sensor, initiating the emission of ultrasonic waves.
2. Object Detection: These waves travel through the air, reflect off objects, and return to
the sensor's echo pin.
3. Distance Calculation: The sensor measures the time taken for the waves to return and
calculates the distance using the formula:
4. Servo Rotation: The servo motor rotates the sensor from 0 to 360 degrees, allowing a
comprehensive scan of the surroundings.

5. Data Display: The calculated distance and corresponding angle are displayed on the
LCD. If an object is within a predefined range, LEDs illuminate, and the buzzer sounds to
indicate proximity.
Expected Outcome :

The expected outcome of an Arduino-Based RADAR System using an Ultrasonic Sensor is a

real-time object detection and distance measurement system, displayed visually like a radar
screen. If any foreign object is been detected in the sensor it buzzers to control centre and alerts
the officers so they take further necessary actions for that. The system measures the distance how
far the object is at what angle so from all these information the military systems can lunch the
bombs to destroy it and it eases the military spy systems. Compared to vision-based systems, the
use of ultrasonic sensors offers several advantages including simplicity, low power consumption,
cost-effectiveness, and operation in all lighting conditions
Conclusion :

The Arduino-Based RADAR System using an Ultrasonic Sensor successfully demonstrates a

low-cost, efficient method for real-time object detection and distance measurement. By
combining an ultrasonic sensor with a servo motor and Arduino microcontroller, the system
simulates a radar-like scanning mechanism that can detect objects in its surroundings and
measure their distances with good accuracy. The visual representation of detected objects
enhances the user’s ability to understand the environment in a radar-style display, making it
useful for applications such as robot navigation, obstacle avoidance, and security systems.
