a. Climate change is the rise in temperature of the Earth causing the increasing frequency
and severity of natural disasters, such as- Typhoon, drought, and heat waves- which
destroy lives and livelihoods. Further rise in sea levels will threaten coastal fields and
force people into migration causing social and economic stress.
b. Deforestation- The large-scale elimination of forests reduces biodiversity as it destroys
the home of millions of species of plants and animals, some of which become
endangered or extinct. Such activities also disrupt the carbon cycle, adding carbon
dioxide to the atmosphere and accelerating climate change.
c. Waste Pollution- The unregulated storage and disposal of gigantic amounts of waste,
particularly plastic and hazardous waste, poisons water and soil, endangering life. It also
clutters drainage systems, giving rise to urban flooding, and reduces the aesthetic and
economic appeal of coastal areas such as beaches and riverbanks.
2.) Identify two different ways of protecting and addressing the adverse effect brought by
man to the Environment.
Other ways to combat the destruction kissing the earth by man are:
I. Reduce waste with the support of "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle"- minimize consumption;
reuse whenever possible; recycle those items when it is impossible to reuse them in
order to conserve resources. It is the first concept in waste management that suggests
ways to reduce the amount of waste produced and encourages persons to attempt to
reuse everything before throwing it away. Materials that can be recycled into new
products should be processed.
II. Switching to renewable energy sources like solar and wind power so that we reduce
our dependency on fossil fuels, which are major contributors to greenhouse gas
emissions. The burning of fossil fuels has a negative impact on the environment; hence,
by embracing renewable energy options like solar and wind power, the carbon footprint
can be reduced.
6.) What is the P.D. 1586 all about and why was P.D. enacted?
Commonly referred to as P.D. 1586 or Presidential Decree No. 1586, this piece
of legislation in the Philippines established the Environmental Impact Statement System
(EIS), under which any person, partnership, or corporation must secure an Environmental
Compliance Certificate (ECC) before engaging in essentially any activity that would likely
significantly affect the environment. The law aims to provide a balance between
economic growth and environmental protection, by imposing an impact assessment on
the potential environmental damage before undertaking environmentally critical projects.
