Thank you, Angela.

C. LESSON PROPER
Let us proceed, to our discussion.
What is evaluating algebraic expressions?
Are you familiar with the word evaluating
class?
Okay, if none.
To evaluate an algebraic expression means
to substitute the given specific values for the
variables and then simplify the resulting
numerical expression.

What is the difference between numerical

and algebraic expressions?
Do you have an idea class? : Ma’am numerical is consist only of
numbers and for algebraic
expressions : these include numbers,
operations, and at least one variable.
That’s right!
When we say numerical expression class. It
is contains only numbers and symbols.

For example: 5×3+2

1+2

And for algebraic expressions . It is contains

numbers, symbols and variables. Also
known as a variable expression.

For example: m+8

2a+2

And lastly when we say variable. It is a

letter or symbol that represents a number.

For example: a, b, x and y

Did you understand class? :Yes, ma’am

We have two steps in evaluating an

algebraic expression.

Who wants to read the steps in evaluating an : (The students praise their hands)
algebraic expression.
: Steps to Evaluate an Algebraic
Yes, Angela Expression

To find the value of an algebraic expression

for the given values of variables, we can use
the following steps:

Step 1. Replacing the variable by

the given number value through
substitution
Step 2. Performing the indicated
arithmetic following the order of
operations.

Thank you, Angela

Where do we usually hear the word

substitution or substitute, class? : ( The students praise their hands)

Yes, Marjorie : In sport, Ma’am

In what sport, Marjorie? : Basketball or volleyball, Ma’am

Okay, that’s right

So, What you do substitute or substitution
in sport, class? : ( The students praise their hands)

Yes, Ian : Ma’am by placed by another player.

Okay, Very good

In order of operations who can give me the
acronym of PEMDAS? : ( The students praise their hands)

Yes, Richelle? :PEMDAS ( Parentheses, Exponent,

Multiplication, Division, Addition, and
Subtraction)

Very good, Richelle

It is also a set of rules that prioritize the
order of calculations. Which operation to
perform first.

Let’s try!
: Solutions
x + 7, when x = 3 : x + 7, when replaced x by 3
= 3 + 7 Simplify
=3+7 = 10
= 10 = x + 7 = 10
= x + 7 = 10

Who wants to solve this algebraic

expression on the board and explain.
1. 9x-2, when x=5
2. 3x-2y+4, if x= -2 and y= -4 : ( The students praise their hands)

1. 9x-2, when x=5

Yes, Janice
Solution
: 9x-2= 9(5)-2
= 45- 2
= 43

Everyone, Please Try to solve on your

answer sheets
: (Yes, Ma’am)

Do you get the same answer, class?

Okay, Very good, class!

2. 3x-2y+4, if x= -2 and y= -4
How about the number 2? And please try to
solve on your answer sheets : ( The students praise their hands)

Yes, Benedict 2. 3x-2y+4, if x= -2 and y= -4

Solution
: 3x-2y+4= 3(-2)-2(-4)+4
= -6-(-8)+4
= [-6-(-8)]+4
= -6+8 +4
= 2+4
=6

Do you get the same answer, class? : ( Yes, Ma’am)

Okay, Very good, class!

I have here another example and write your

solution on your notebook the first five that
got the correct answer will be given 5
points.

Are you done, class?

Who wants to answer on the board class and

explain? : (The students raise their hands)

Yes, Shaina
a²-2ab-3b²| if a= 2 and b= 5

Solution
= | a²-2ab-3b²| = | 2²-2(2)(5)-3(5)²|
= | 4-20-3(25)|
= | 4-20-75|
= |(4-20)-75|
= | -16-75|
= |-91|
= 91

Okay, Very good, class!

Do you understand class?

Do you have any question or clarification

about our topic today? : ( None, Ma’am)
Take note, class:

In evaluating algebraic expression, we need

to use the order of operations for us to get
the correct answer.

Do you have any questions and

clarifications regarding to our lesson today?

F. VALUING

I have here a quote by Thomas Edison

Kindly read it, Elizabeth : “ There is no Substitute for hard work”

Thank you, Elizabeth

Who wants to give there insight about the
quote? : (the students raise their hand)

Yes, Angel : There is no substitute for hard work means

that achieving something by means of effort
and hard work makes you feel good about
what you can accomplish and inspire you to
think that anything is possible.

Excellent, Angel
Thank you!
There is no substitute for hard work, it
means that is we want something, if we
want to achieve something, and if we want
to makes our dream come true, hard work is
what we need for us to achieve them, there
is nothing more but hard work. Getting
something without hard work will help you
temporarily. So there is no substitute for
hard work.

Did you understand class? :( Yes, Ma’am)

G. GENERALIZATION

I give you another activity; raise your hand

if you know the answer, whoever gets the
correct answer I will give a plus point. Are
may instructions clear? : ( Yes, Ma’am)

Are you ready class?

Okay if you are ready, let’s start!

1. What it means to evaluate an : ( The students praise their hands)

expression?
: ( Student’s answer may vary)
Yes, Mary joy
: To evaluate an algebraic expression means
to substitute the given specific values for the
variables and then simplify the resulting
numerical expression.

Okay, Very good

2. What is the connection of PEMDAS

: ( The students praise this hands)
in evaluating algebraic expressions?
: ( Student’s answer may vary)
Yes, Justine
: Getting wrong order of solving the
operations will result in wrong evaluation of
algebraic expressions. So, we need to follow
the rule of PEMDAS which strands for
stating with Parentheses, Exponent,
Multiplication, Division, Addition, and
Subtraction.

Okay, Very good

3. Give the first step in evaluating

algebraic expression? : ( The students praise their hands)

Yes, Ronalyn : ( Student’s answer may vary)

: The First step is to substitute the given
values for each variable. Then, simplify first
the expression within the parenthesis.
Very good!
: ( The students praise their hands)
3. How the second step? : ( Student’s answer may vary)

Yes, Shaina : Perform all indicated operations and

simplify the result.
