Experiment No: 05
Experiment name: Configuration of DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).

Objective:
The objective of this experiment is to configure a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)
server in Cisco Packet Tracer to automatically assign IP addresses to client devices within a
network. By implementing DHCP, network administrators can efficiently manage IP address
allocation, reducing manual configuration errors and ensuring scalability. This experiment aims
to demonstrate the working mechanism of DHCP, its role in preventing IP conflicts, and its
advantages in optimizing network administration through dynamic IP allocation within a
specified subnet.

Tools Required:
● 1. Cisco Packet Tracer
● 2. 1 Server-PT (End Device)
● 3. Switch
● 4. PCs

Procedure:

Step 1: Setup Network Topology

● Open Cisco Packet Tracer and create a new project.
● Select a Server-PT from the End Devices category.
● Select a Switch from the Network Devices category.
● Select five PCs from the End Devices category.
● Use Ethernet cables to connect:
➢ The server to the switch.
➢ All PCs to the switch.

Step 2: Configure the DHCP Server

● Click on the Server-PT device to open its configuration window.

● Navigate to the Desktop tab and select IP Configuration.
● Assign a static IP address to the server (e.g., 192.168.1.1).
● Set the Subnet Mask to 255.255.255.0.
● Navigate to the Services tab and select DHCP.
● Turn ON the DHCP service.
● Configure a new DHCP pool by specifying.

Step 3: Configure the PCs

● Click on each PC to open its configuration window.

● Navigate to the Desktop tab and select IP Configuration.
● Select DHCP instead of static IP.
● The PC will automatically receive an IP address from the DHCP server.

Step 5: Verify DHCP Functionality

Check the IP address assigned to each PC to ensure they have received an IP address from the
DHCP server.

Conclusion:
The lab demonstrated the successful configuration of a DHCP server in Cisco Packet Tracer. By
implementing DHCP, IP addresses were dynamically assigned to client devices, reducing manual
configuration efforts and simplifying network administration. This approach ensures efficient IP
address management, prevents IP conflicts, and enhances network scalability. The experiment
highlighted the importance of DHCP in automating network operations and optimizing resource
utilization in modern networks.
