Vacuum circuit breakers are comprised of three key building blocks: vacuum interrupter (VI),
epoxy resin encapsulated pole unit (EPU), and universal mechanism assembly (UMA). Available
in both withdrawable and fixed configurations.
pf = kW/kVA
kVAr = sqrt[(kVA)2 – (kW)2]
kVA – apparent power
kW – true power
kVAr – reactive power
The protection relay oversees the operation of circuit breakers. It monitors the circuit beyond the
breaker using current and voltage transformers. Current transformers play a crucial role by
providing feedback to the relay, indicating the amount of current and detecting overcurrent
situations. In case of a short circuit or ground fault, downstream current transformers detect these
events and inform the relay. If parameters are exceeded, the relay communicates with the circuit
breaker to trip it.
