Vacuum Circuit Breakers

Vacuum circuit breakers consist of a vacuum interrupter, epoxy resin encapsulated pole unit, and a universal mechanism assembly, available in withdrawable and fixed configurations. A protection relay monitors the circuit using current and voltage transformers, detecting overcurrent situations and informing the relay of any faults. If parameters exceed safe limits, the relay signals the circuit breaker to trip and prevent damage.

Vacuum circuit breakers are comprised of three key building blocks: vacuum interrupter (VI),

epoxy resin encapsulated pole unit (EPU), and universal mechanism assembly (UMA). Available
in both withdrawable and fixed configurations.

pf = kW/kVA
kVAr = sqrt[(kVA)2 – (kW)2]
kVA – apparent power
kW – true power
kVAr – reactive power
The protection relay oversees the operation of circuit breakers. It monitors the circuit beyond the
breaker using current and voltage transformers. Current transformers play a crucial role by
providing feedback to the relay, indicating the amount of current and detecting overcurrent
situations. In case of a short circuit or ground fault, downstream current transformers detect these
events and inform the relay. If parameters are exceeded, the relay communicates with the circuit
breaker to trip it.
