Chemistry 1 Study Guide
1. Matter and its Properties:
States of Matter: Solid, liquid, and gas.
Physical Properties: Characteristics that can be observed without changing the substance's composition (e.g., color, density, melting point). Chemical Properties: Characteristics that describe how a substance reacts with other substances (e.g., flammability, reactivity). Changes of State: Physical changes that involve a change in the state of matter (e.g., melting, freezing, boiling). Mixtures vs. Pure Substances: Mixtures are combinations of multiple substances, while pure substances have a fixed composition.
2. Atoms and Elements:
Atomic Structure: The atom is the basic unit of matter, consisting of
a nucleus (protons and neutrons) and electrons orbiting around it. Elements: Pure substances made up of only one type of atom (e.g., gold, oxygen, carbon). Periodic Table: Organizes elements based on their atomic number and recurring chemical properties. Isotopes: Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
3. Chemical Bonding:
Ionic Bonds: Formed by the transfer of electrons between atoms,
creating ions (charged particles). Covalent Bonds: Formed by the sharing of electrons between atoms. Metallic Bonds: Found in metals, where electrons are delocalized throughout the structure.
4. Chemical Formulas and Nomenclature:
Chemical Formulas: Represent the composition of molecules and compounds (e.g., H₂O, NaCl). Naming Compounds: Systematic rules for naming different types of compounds (e.g., ionic compounds, covalent compounds, acids).
5. Chemical Reactions:
Reactants and Products: Substances that react and are formed in a
chemical reaction. Balancing Equations: Ensuring that the number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides of the equation. Types of Reactions: Synthesis, decomposition, single displacement, double displacement, combustion.
6. Stoichiometry:
Mole Concept: A unit of measurement for the amount of substance.
Molar Mass: The mass of one mole of a substance. Stoichiometric Calculations: Using balanced chemical equations to predict the amounts of reactants and products in a reaction.
7. Solutions and Concentration:
Solutions: Homogeneous mixtures of two or more substances.
Solvent and Solute: The solvent is the substance that dissolves the solute. Concentration: The amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solvent.
8. Acids and Bases:
pH Scale: A measure of the acidity or basicity of a solution.
Acids: Substances that donate protons (H⁺ ions) in solution. Bases: Substances that accept protons (H⁺ ions) or donate hydroxide ions (OH⁻ ions) in solution. - Thermochemistry: The study of energy changes in chemical reactions.
- Equilibrium: The state where the rates of the forward and reverse reactions are equal.
- Organic Chemistry: The study of carbon-containing compounds.
