Essay draft on Discuss the
impact of the fast fashion
industry on the environment.
1
Introduction
Fast fashion is a global force impacting consumer behaviour. Fast fashion has short
manufacturing cycles and low prices (Fletcher, 2018). This article will examine the
multifaceted impacts of fast fashion on the environment, focusing on pollution, resource
depletion, and garbage generation.
Paragraph 1
The fast fashion industry's relentless concentration on turnover causes environmental damage
(Niinimäki and Hassi, 2019). Mass production uses synthetic materials and chemical
processes, which release toxins into the air and water. Polyester, a petrochemical-based
fabric, threatens global ecosystems. To create bright hues, dyeing uses toxic chemicals that
damage water supplies and endanger aquatic life (Bhardwaj and Fairhurst, 2020).
Paragraph 2
Due to its excessive use of raw materials, fast fashion contributes to pollution and depletion
of natural resources. Clothing production uses a lot of water, land, and energy. Volume puts
more strain on these resources, which leads to the chopping down of trees to make viscose
and modal, two wood-based fabrics (Fernie and Perry, 2023). Uncontrolled deforestation
destroys biodiversity, disrupting ecosystems and disrupting Earth's delicate equilibrium.
Paragraph 3
Fast fashion generates massive amounts of garbage, environmental harm, and resource
depletion. The concept of "throwaway fashion" promotes a culture of disposability in which
products are discarded after a few uses. Due to the shorter lifespan of garments, landfills are
full of non-biodegradable synthetic products (McNeill and Moore, 2022).
2
Conclusion
To conclude, quick fashion causes pollution, loss of natural resources, and massive waste
generation. Urgent action is needed to accelerate the fashion industry's ethical and ecological
transition. Consumers, producers, and governments must collaborate to encourage
responsible consumption and create new sustainable practises.

Essay draft on Discuss the
impact of the fast fashion
industry on the environment.

Introduction
To follow trends, clothes are made quickly and sold in stores. This is "fast fashion."
Collections often follow Fashion Week or celebrity styles (Chouprina, 2018). Fast fashion
allows regular people to afford the latest trend. The global fast fashion industry is changing
people's behaviour by making clothes quickly and cheaply. This essay examines the complex
environmental impacts of fast fashion, including pollution, waste, and resource depletion.
Paragraph 1
The fast fashion business pollutes the environment a lot because it always wants to sell things
quickly. Chemical processes and man-made materials used in fast fashion pollute the air and
water because they are used in large amounts and in short production cycles (Sakib, 2022).
Petrochemicals are used to make polyester, a synthetic fabric that is widely used. Polyester is
bad for ecosystems because it doesn't break down. To get brightly coloured clothes, they need
to be dyed, which involves using harmful chemicals that damage aquatic life and pollute
water sources. A lot of the time, wastewater from dyeing and finishing clothes is dumped into
bodies of water without being cleaned first. This makes the water dirty and is bad for the
environment.
This point is very important for understanding how fast fashion hurts the environment
because it shows how badly the clothes are made in the industry. The health and well-being
of people and the environment are both hurt by fast fashion, which makes a lot of trash.
Putting chemicals into the air, water, and soil can cause them to build up. After that, these
chemicals can get into food chains and hurt the health of people and animals over time. The
ways that textiles are dyed and finished can also pollute water, which can hurt the people who
depend on these water sources for drinking, farming, and making a living.
To get people in the fashion industry to care about the environment and buy less, fast fashion
needs to be shown to be bad for it. Because fast fashion is bad for the environment, we need
to start cleaning up the air and making clothes in more eco-friendly ways right away
(Analysts et al., 2021). Learn how clothes hurt the environment before you buy them or try to
get people to buy clothes that are better for the environment. Clean up the fast fashion supply
chain to help protect ecosystems and communities around the world and teach people how to
take care of the earth.
6
Paragraph 2
Because of the need for more, fast fashion uses up natural resources more quickly (Garg,
2020). A lot of resources are lost because of this. Making clothes uses a lot of land, water,
and energy, which is even worse for the environment. For example, a lot of the cotton used in
fast fashion needs a lot of farmland and a lot of water to grow. A lot of energy and fossil fuels
are also used to make man-made fibres like nylon and polyester. Fast fashion seems to use a
lot of water and electricity around the world. This is bad for the environment and makes it
harder to get things you need.
It also shows how wasteful the fast fashion model is, which another important point is. It's
not likely that the fashion industry will last in the long term if natural resources are used up
too quickly. We can make the urgent call for more eco-friendly ways to make things and use
them by focusing on how using up resources hurts the environment. Also, learning about the
link between fast fashion and waste of resources can spark new ideas and encourage people
to look into eco-friendly materials and ways of making clothes. Let's not let the fashion
industry use too many resources. This will help protect the environment and make sure those
communities and ecosystems around the world can handle stress.
Paragraph 3
A shocking amount of trash is made by the fast fashion industry, which contributes to a
culture of discard ability and makes environmental damage worse. "Throwaway fashion"
makes people want to throw away clothes after only a few wears, which create an
unbelievable amount of textile waste. The number of clothes people buy has gone up by 60%
since 2000, but they only keep them for half as long. In this cycle of overconsumption, trash
dumps get full, the environment gets dirty, and resources are used up (McGrath, 2020).
This is very important because it shows that fast fashion hurts the environment and doesn't
last. It's tougher to get rid of trash when there is a lot of textile waste. People and ecosystems
that are already having a hard time are put under even more stress by this. It would be better
for the environment if people knew how bad fast fashion waste is for the planet. This would
change how they buy things and throw away trash. The waste from fast fashion is bad for the
world. Get people to recycle, upcycle, and use circular fashion models to help fix this. People
will be more careful about what they buy and support brands that care about the environment
if they know how damaging single-use clothing is to the environment. We need to find a way
7
to stop fast fashion waste if we want to make the fashion industry more responsible and long-
lasting, one that knows the limits of the Earth and encourages people to care about it.
Conclusion
Many environmental problems result from fast fashion. Environmental pollution, resource
depletion, and trash production result. We must address these issues immediately to make
fashion more ethical and sustainable. Consumers, manufacturers, and policymakers must
collaborate to protect the environment, open supply chains, and promote responsible
consumption. We can make fashion stylish and environmentally friendly by learning how fast
fashion hurts the world and changing our lifestyles.
