English Language
Paper 1- Reading
An unseen comprehension passage will be given, and you will be assessed on the
following:

▪ use different ways to work out unfamiliar words


▪ identify explicit and implicit information in a text
▪ use evidence and quotations to support your answer
▪ read for meaning and ideas
▪ make a prediction/ending based on the given text
▪ explore how a theme is developed/consider an opinion about the story
▪ identification of word classes
▪ figurative language/noun and prepositional phrase

Paper 2: Writing
In the test, learners will be assessed on their ability to write a 200-250-word fantasy
fiction story:

▪ using genre appropriate figurative language and images


▪ be able to effectively convey imagery, emotions, and settings/flashbacks
▪ incorporate the elements/features of a fantasy fiction as outlined in notebooks
▪ include themes and heroic characters
▪ use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate to the context
▪ use register appropriate to the context
▪ make accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar

In the reading paper (Paper 1), you will respond to a series of questions requiring
answers of different lengths. (25 marks)

In the writing paper (Paper 2), you will write a fantasy fiction story on any one of the
given story prompts.
