The real meaning of the word FUNNEL

“You’re just one funnel away…” sound familiar? This is the


dream most online marketers cling to only to wind up
confused and disenchanted by the broken promise of fast
funnel fueled cash. It’s not that funnels don’t work. It’s
not even that “one funnel away” is inherently misleading.
It’s that most people teach the mechanics of the funnel
and not the psychology behind what makes it effective.

If you’re new to the online business world and totally lost


right now, here’s the usual definition of the word
“funnel”...

Old definition: A funnel is the set of steps a visitor needs to go


through before they can reach the conversion.

New definition: A funnel is a journey, a quest that each of your


customers goes on in an effort to solve their problems and achieve
their goals.

Your future clients and customers are telling themselves


endless stories around why they struggle, how they’ll
solve this problem, how it’s impacting their lives, and how
things would be different if this weren’t the case.

As humans, we make sense of the world


through stories, not through logic.

This is where most marketers get funnels all wrong. They


think as long as they have blog posts, a lead magnet,
emails, and a sales page, that’s all they need. Those are
vehicles, but they don’t move without the fuel of stories
and emotion.

When it comes to funnels, think of yourself as a guide.


Remember, your future student is telling themself a story
— and in this story, they’re the hero. Your job is to
understand the stories they’re telling themselves, what
they’re currently experiencing, and what they believe so
that you can lead them to the happy end they’re seeking.

The Emotion Equation: how genuine


connections lead to conversions and how to
create intimacy at scale

Now that you’ve accepted your role as a guide, let’s talk


about what that exciting responsibility entails. Guidance
is synonymous with leadership — but don’t let that deter
or intimidate you. Leadership happens naturally when
you understand the terrain or the way forward better
than those in your company. Perfection isn’t a
prerequisite.

What matters is that you’re intimately aware of what


your future students, clients, and customers are going
through and what obstacles they might face along the
way. When you know those things, communicating with
empathy is easy. But why does empathy matter? If you
know the way forward shouldn’t your prospects follow
along without question?

Of course the answer is no. People don’t follow those who


they don’t have a reason to trust. Empathy is a
foundational piece of what makes trust possible. It’s what
allows you to meet your dream students, clients, and
customers where they’re at, to speak their language,
reflect back to them what they’re going through, prove
that you get it, and ultimately show them that there is a
solution.

Empathy is a skill that boils down to commiserating and


relating to complex human emotions — whether you’ve
experienced the exact circumstance doesn’t matter.
What matters is that you can relate, imagine, and reflect
on how exactly the person you’re trying to reach might be
feeling.

It’s easy to forget that emotion. In business we tend to


sidestep emotion because it seems complicated and too
personal. But emotions are surprisingly simple. While
some research shows there are around 27 distinct
emotions, other theories point to there being as few as
four universal basic emotions — happiness, sadness,
anger, and fear. Check out this interactive map of GIFs
and videos broken down into percentages of the
emotions they inspired.

If you’re wondering how all of this relates to marketing,


stay with me. Like I mentioned earlier, people don’t make
decisions based only on logic, every buying decision is
rooted more in emotion than anything else which
explains why most marketing feels inherently
manipulative.

A foundation of empathy helps you eliminate that


problem that inspires so many conscientious business
owners to state that they don’t want to sound too
“salesy”.

Indeed, prodding at someone’s most vulnerable emotions


feels downright slimy and ineffective for a very good
reason, but when you choose to lead with empathy you
can avoid the trap that makes most people allergic to
marketing themselves.
So how do you effectively put yourself in
the shoes of your ideal students, clients,
and customers and connect with
empathy? There are 2 main ways:

1. Be obsessed with understanding them

This is where your quiz comes in real handy. Being able to


ask questions and see the data is incredibly helpful in
understanding where your audience is at, but it’s not the
only way. Conversations with your dream students,
clients, and customers are one of the most underrated
methods there are when it comes to building your
empathy muscles. Other ways of doing this include
surveys, scouring Facebook groups, and mining reviews
for related offers on Amazon.

When you have this direct insight, you can get specific in
your messaging — and specificity is a sign to your reader
that you know exactly what they’re going through.

2. Be your sweet self

It’s okay to be polarizing and if everyone loves you, you’re


doing it wrong. Trolls, haters, and unsubscribes are part
and parcel with operating an online business. As Dita Von
Teese puts it, “you can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the
world and there’s still going to be someone who hates
peaches.”
When you make those 2 things part of how you do
business, you’ll communicate in a way that builds real
intimacy and connection, the conversion secrets that
always outperform manipulation and pure logic.

The Belief Bridge

There comes a point in every prospect's journey when


they have to cross the belief bridge. This is a pivotal
experience where they must shift their beliefs in order to
go further on their journey toward learning from you.

Beliefs aren’t often discussed in the world of digital


marketing. Maybe it’s because they’re intangible and
difficult to measure or maybe it’s because we haven’t yet
caught on to the importance of understanding the
underlying belief structures that drive decisions. Either
way, you’ll be ahead of the crowd if you know how beliefs
work and your role in shifting them.

First off it’s important to know that anyone who comes


across your content and takes the next step in joining
your community (whether that’s your email list or
following you on social) wants to believe that you can
help them.

Your job is to prove that you can. Because while your


prospects might be holding onto hope that you’ve got the
goods to solve their problem or fulfill their desire, they’re
also skeptical. They’re smart. They’ve likely had promises
broken before. And so they’re looking for what makes
you and your course different.

Not just that, they’re looking for proof that you care, that
you get them, and that you’ve got a track record for
getting results (either for yourself or for others).

Something that is talked about a lot in marketing is the


importance of overcoming objections. Essentially when
you overcome an objection, you shift a belief.

Here’s how to get a grip on the current beliefs and


objections standing between someone being a stranger
vs. a sale:

STEP 1: Make a list of all the objections currently


stopping your dream students, clients, and customers
from investing in your offer — or even just signing up for
your freebies. Ex. lack of time or money, etc.

STEP 2: Make a list of the more intangible limiting beliefs


that might be stopping them. Ex. not believing they’re
capable of change, assuming it’ll be too hard, etc.

STEP 3: Jump ahead into the next section on persuasion


principles and apply what you learn to craft compelling
belief shifting arguments for each objection and limiting
belief you discovered.

Sales Psychology & Persuasion Principles (+


what they look like in action)

If you understand what makes people tick, shifting beliefs


and writing persuasive copy that connects and converts is
infinitely easier.

Robert Cialdini is the godfather of persuasion. His work


has been pivotal in changing how marketers think about
creating Influence. I highly recommend reading his books,
both Influence and Persuasion.
Let’s take a peek at Cialdini’s 6 Principles of Persuasion
because even if you do nothing else, these are worth
knowing and implementing in your copy.

1. Reciprocity

If you’ve ever felt like you were giving too much away fo’
free — this is for you. When you do things for others,
when you give genuine value, folks are inclined to give
back.

Copyhackers is a great example of a brand that gives and


gives some more. Every Tuesday, Joanna hosts a pitch
free training webinar, all the recordings are available on
the website, in addition to regular in-depth blogs and
other lead magnets so good you’d pay for them. But even
with all this free stuff, they still make millions selling their
in-depth courses.

2. Commitment

When we humans commit to something, we’re inclined to


stick it out. That means when someone follows you or
signs up to your list the likelihood of them committing to
your brand and buying from you in the future goes way
up. To harness this power in your own marketing, use the
power of “micro-commitments” by creating irresistibly
enticing free assets (like your quiz!) to get people into
your sphere.

3. Social Proof

You’ve heard of social proof, but why does it work?


Because humans assume that there’s safety in numbers,
that if something worked for someone like them, it might
just work for them. All the more reason to show off your
testimonials, case studies, and positive user data in your
copy.

4. Authority

Authority can sound a little intimidating but you don’t


need a cluster of letters after your name to use it to your
advantage. After all, what makes you an authority
completely depends on the perception of your unique
audience. People think it’s cool that I’m Amy Porterfield’s
copywriter on retainer, that gives me authority. What
about you? Do you have an especially relevant degree? A
famous client? Is your work featured on a prestigious
website? Share those things.

5. Liking

It’s a fact. People buy from people and companies they


like. That’s why it’s critical to show who you are beyond
what you do for a living. Your audience wants to know the
people behind the brand. Share your quirks, your stories,
and you why whenever possible.

6. Scarcity

Hey, remember the last time you went to book an Airbnb


and you were subtly told that 17 other people were
searching for your dates, or that the listing you were
looking at was usually booked — that’s the power of
subtle scarcity in action. It works because when
something’s in short supply, we line up to get in on the
action. Scarcity in your sales copy looks like
communicating when your offer will disappear, how many
spots are left, and why the time to take action is NOW.

Knowing and implementing these 6 persuasion and sales


psychology principles will help you cut through the noise
and increase your conversions, just remember to lead
with empathy and you’ll avoid coming across as just
another manipulative marketer.

Positioning 101: market saturation is a myth +


polarization

It doesn’t matter that there are 180,000 other health


coaches, when you know how to position your message
throughout your brand, lead magnet, and offer, you’ll
stand out and attract customers.

WHAT IS POSITIONING?

Who better than Al Ries, the inventor of this concept to


explain it…

“companies are focused on building products rather than brands. A product is


something made in a factory. A brand is something made in the mind. To be
successful today, you have to build brands, not products. And you build brands by
using positioning strategies, starting with a good name.” - Al Ries

“Positioning is an organized system for finding a window in the mind. It is based on


the concept that communication can only take place at the right time and under
the right circumstances.” - Al Ries

2 things here to note:

1. A name is a powerful way to strategically position


yourself in the minds of your target audience.

2. You’re not trying to appeal to everyone — you’re


trying to appeal to the person who based on where
they’re at in their journey right now you know can
best serve and help.
The Blue Ocean Positioning Strategy

Maybe you’ve heard of the blue ocean strategy book? If


not, it’s basically a guide to finding the gaps in your
industry. Uber found themselves in a blue ocean when
they launched their rideshare model. I know you’re not
Uber but you don’t need to be…

Part of positioning your quiz and offer to stand out


happens by determining where the gap in your market is
and/or what question your prospects are asking
themselves that YOU hold the solution to.

If you speak to the gap or a need that’s not being met with
your quiz topic and description, you’ve created an instant
blue ocean.

This is an example from an ads strategist who’s #1


question is “what strategy should I use.” Her target
audience is tired of guessing, cue her quiz with a neat ‘n
tidy solution.
If you’re not sure where to start with this, try asking
yourself a few of these questions:

- What do I want to be known for?


- What questions does my audience ask most about
X?
- What unique solutions can I provide to their
challenges?

The Path to Profit from Lead Magnet


to Launch Checklist

From the moment someone interacts with your brand


to the moment they hit the ‘buy now’ button on your
sales page, this checklist covers the little known
stranger to customer essentials you’ll need to ensure
your future funnel actually converts onlookers into
buyers.

Lead magnet:

⬜ Know who you want to attract as a student, client, and


customer, not just a lead. What attributes does this
person have? What questions or struggles are they
experiencing? Think of them when you create your lead
magnet.

⬜ The benefits of your quiz, webinar, and/or other


freebies are closely aligned with the benefits of your
course.

⬜ Your content (emails, social media posts, blogs, etc.)


and lead magnets start the process of breaking down
beliefs that hold your prospects back.

⬜ Your titles are clear and speak to the desires of your


dream student.

⬜ Create your lead magnet with the end in mind

Nurture content:

⬜ Include plenty of stories, both your own and those of


people you’ve helped in the past.

⬜ Remember that neutral is a death sentence, it’s okay


to be polarizing and to speak only to those who you
know you can help.

⬜ Paint pictures of what’s possible, give your prospects


hope for the future.

⬜ Start using the persuasion principles by highlighting


what makes you an authority, social proof you have that
shows you know your stuff, and of course activating the
law of reciprocity by activating generosity.

⬜ Answer the question “what’s in it for me?” on a regular


basis, always bring the focus of your content back to
your audience.

Webinar:

⬜ This is where you’ll really want to dig in and start


presenting the arguments you constructed to lead
people across your belief bridge.

⬜ Remember reciprocity, your webinar is the perfect


opportunity to lead with generosity and trust that it
comes back around.

⬜ Focus on the emotional benefits your offer will make


possible and speak to those throughout your
presentation.

Sales page + emails:

⬜ All of the above applies here too!

⬜ Break down every objection on your list and replace


limiting beliefs with different ways of thinking based on
evidence and emotion.

⬜ Toot your own horn. Include a bio section that


highlights your expertise and plenty of testimonials or
case studies.

⬜ Embrace discomfort, both in sharing your own story


and the why behind your course and in digging into the
negative experience your prospect might be going
through — if they don’t make a change, what will
happen?

⬜ Predict the future. Use your empathy skills to put


yourself in the shoes of your prospect and describe in
detail how your program could help their life change.

How to use this template: this template is designed to help
you get started on the right track with your welcome
sequence. Use it as a framework, not a rulebook. Feel free to
add your own creative twists and turns as they come to you.

Use your quiz results to personalize at least the first email of


your Welcome Sequence. If your quiz isn’t ready yet and you
have a different lead magnet, feel free to tweak that first
email to fit whatever freebie your new subscriber signed up
through.

Make sure that you keep sending emails to your audience


after your Welcome Sequence ends. If you want to keep your
audience feeling connected, you need to keep engaging with
them and giving them value.

And then I proceed to try and explain something that, to


most people, seems like the most random career on the
planet.

You too might be wondering how I got into writing


quizzes.

Well, ever since I was a little girl I always dreamed of


becoming a quiz expert… dreams do come true.
Kidding. I wanted to be a lawyer or a famous singer 🎵.
How naive 7-year-old me was.

Here’s the real story:

A few years ago, I was working for this online spiritual


development company. Every month I would write an
entire course from scratch AND create all the marketing
assets, sales funnels, etc.

There was only one problem…

Not enough new leads at the top of the funnel meant a


stale list, and that meant all these new courses weren’t
selling.

I tried a lot of different things to rectify the situation: free


guides, video series, audio meditations, challenges —
you name it, I tried it.

Sidenote: it probably didn’t help that their best advice for


me was to connect with my Essential Self and write from
a place of ego-free consciousness. 🙏

Nothing we did made a dent in our numbers until I


decided to take a stab at writing a quiz.

With 10,000 new leads (from a $500 ad spend) in one


month, it was clear that I was on to something. That was
more new leads than we’d seen all year!

Since then I’ve created similar results for dozens of other


online businesses in all sorts of niches.
My biggest lesson in these last few years is that it takes
more than just a quiz to build a thriving business — it
takes what I call, Interactive Empathy Marketing.

It’s more of an ecosystem than a tactic.

Good ideas usually take a while to catch on.

Even when they meet all the standard “success criteria”


and fulfill an important need!

Even when they’re backed by ample evidence and would


sell like churros in an alternate universe that places logic
before emotion.
It took 10 years before it was mandatory that all car
manufacturers include seat belts even though they were
proven to save lives.

In the year 1600, randomized trials showed that putting


limes on ships headed out for long journeys eliminated
scurvy.

It still took the British government 265 years to mandate


every ship to carry citrus. Too busy killing whales to
bother I guess. 🙄

In 1847, Dr. Semmelweis discovered that if all physicians


washed their hands before delivering babies, you could
reduce the mortality rates from septicemia from 18% to
2%.

His peers ostracized him for such a crazy idea even


though he had proof.

The point of all these random history facts is that


people don’t make decisions based on logic. They
never have.

It’s this impossible-to-ignore reality that makes Interactive


Empathy Marketing so effective.

But right now you’re probably wondering what the


fudgesicles that even means…

So lemme break it down Hammer style.


(You’re totally one of those back up dancers thinking
okayyyy I guess we can give this a try… )

Your marketing is how you reach people. It’s how you turn
strangers into customers. It’s the backbone of your
business.

But traditional marketing is changing fast. It’s not enough


to throw up a free PDF guide and some automated emails
and call it a day.

Every day, your ideal clients and customers are


inundated with messages all focused on getting them
to buy something.

David Ogilvy famously said "The customer is not a


moron. She's your wife"... and he was right.

When you as an online business owner replace the


question
“how can I get this person to do what I want?” with “how
can I learn more about this person so that I can really
help them?” — everything changes.

That’s what an Interactive Empathy Marketing Ecosystem


is all about, so let’s break down each element…
WHY INTERACTIVE?

The more interactivity you can include in your marketing,


the better.

It’s 2019 and our attention spans are shorter than ever.
Time is in short demand. Our expectation for instant
gratification is inbred.

We have more options than ever and little patience for


anything that doesn’t feel personalized.

How do you create a pattern interrupt and command


attention? You get people engaged. Quizzes are a
powerful tool for doing this, but it doesn’t stop there.

Chat bots, video, IG stories, interactive articles — even


something as simple as asking people to reply to your
emails brings a level of interactivity to your marketing that
ultimately increases your conversions and engagement.

WHY EMPATHY?

Holla at Brene Brown for making this a buzzword, but the


ability to understand and share the feelings of others is
nothing new.

What is new is the giant wall of tech we humans hide


behind under the guise of being “connected”.

…ironically, tech is making us feel more disconnected


than ever before.
As an online business owner, you’re not seeing your
customers IRL every day, you’re not talking with them,
learning about their lives, or getting constant feedback.

So how are you supposed to develop empathy and


communicate in a way that makes your audience feel
seen, heard, and understood — in a way that makes them
TRUST you?

Asking questions.

Inspiring conversations.

Ditching the obsession with automating every part of your


business and staying open to the idea that it’s your job to
be constantly learning about your people.

A thoughtfully crafted quiz is a tool that allows you to


learn more about who your audience is while engaging
them in the process.

(That’s why they have better conversion rates across the


board than any other lead magnet.)

But that’s not where it ends. Your overall copy and


communication strategy can become a sort of empathy
engine when you get intentional.

WHY CREATE A MARKETING ECOSYSTEM?

Interactive empathy driven marketing isn’t a cure-all


tactic, it’s an ecosystem that can help your business
thrive for the long haul.

The thing about ecosystems is that in order to stay


healthy, they have to evolve.

If you want to thrive in today’s digital marketing space,


you need to make like nature and do the same.

That might not sound easy right off the bat, but I pinky
promise it’s better than the alternative.

… so what is the alternative?

Stagnation. Irrelevance. Disconnection.

One of my old bosses used to have this saying about


everything in life:

“Let it be easy”, she’d say with the utmost grace.

Even though it kinda drove me crazy at the time, today I

I see so many online business owners struggling with

Using interactive content and a deeper understanding of


human psychology, you can tap into empathy and
emotion with ease.

This approach differs pretty dramatically from classic


marketing models based on manipulation.

So how do you create your own Interactive Empathy


Marketing Ecosystem?

Here’s what you’ll need:

1. A big picture vision and a growth mindset. If you’re


not all in, this won’t work.

2. A way of learning about your audience while


creating a positive emotional response. This is
where your quiz comes in.

3. Methods for consistently building trust.

4. Solutions (aka products and services) that resonate


and generate mad ROI for both you AND your
clients and customers.

5. Consistency, flexibility, and a willingness to let go of


old methodologies and be willing to try something
different.

What’s a pre-launch and why do you need one?

It’s time to plant some seeds that will *hopefully* turn into sales down
the line. The purpose of your pre-launch content is to start talking about
the themes and transformations possible from your offer.

● Now it’s time to figure out what your pre-launch content will be about,

- What objections or questions do they have?
- What could I share that would help them overcome those
objections and get clear on their next steps?
- What can I share or teach that’s so valuable it’s worth paying

crew. Each training was based on things that you need to have in place

Facebook groups work really well because you get to create a whole
community around your offer. You can also show up live, host a

with a supportive learning environment.

Also, I’m not very good at playing the Instagram live game, but I would
wholeheartedly recommend that you work that angle if you’re on the
‘gram. A lot of my clients have seen awesome returns on posting to their
stories and going live. And it’s a great chance for people to interact with
you personally, in real time.

One of the most common objections I get to quizzes is that they are
just a quick ‘n easy way to kill time...

That when it comes to personal insight, they have little to offer.

IMHO this comes from how crazy ridiculous many Internet quizzes
are.

To keep bringing in views, Buzzfeed (and many other content sites)


have had to get pretty creative...

These are some of the weirdest quizzes I’ve come across to date:

What kind of garbage are you?

Do you have to pee?

Is your boyfriend great or is he just a racoon?

I guess I would like to know if my hubs was a raccoon, but I feel like
there are probably other, more accurate ways of figuring that out.

Jokes aside, quizzes can do a lot more than simply drive traffic to
your site.

A quiz can…

… Create personal connections between you and your customers


and clients

… Grow your email list at superspeed

… And score you more sales than just about any other lead magnet
The biggest difference between Buzzfeed quizzes and the kind I
just described is the intent...

While Buzzfeed just wants you to look for as long at the lowest cost

I didn’t have time to send you a Sunday Setlist last week. And I’m
not going to be able to put one together for you this weekend either.

Because I’m sitting here, writing to you on my laptop, from the living
room floor of the cozy cabin I’ve lived in for the last 5 years with my
growing family.

On the tiny, forested, sometimes bioluminescent gulf island of my


once-upon-a-time dreams.

Surrounded by half packed boxes and probably not enough bins


and jars full of pickles and other things that likely shouldn’t be
fermenting *quite* this much.

After tossing out 17 bags (for real, yo 🙁) of mostly eaten, stale,


organic chips that I found hidden in the cupboards of this too small,
disorganized kitchen that doesn’t even have a working oven.

👉 sidenote: I hate wasting food so much, it’s literally my #1 pet


peeve (more on that 👇) and I vow to make it to the bottom of every.
single. bag of chips me or my family purchases from now on.
I know, I know: I’m a saint 😇
My heart is so heavy and full and light and excited and I know it’s
not just my second trimester hormones making me feel so many
opposing emotions at the same time.

Because my hunky hubs Colin and I packed up the kiddos, donned


our masks, and took the ferry to the lawyer’s yesterday.

To sign the final batch of papers and finally take legal possession of
our farm in the mountains near the hot springs.

And to pick up our Uhaul.

Then I spent most of today driving around Gabe, packing up my


office, and returning things I’d borrowed back to my favorite people
and places.

Library books, pots, sweaters, hats that I wish I could keep, and
what feels like tiny pieces of my heart.

I didn’t stop at any of my fave beaches, either.

Because you know, I 100% trust Joseph Campbell when he says:


“You must give up the life you had planned to live the life that is
waiting for you.” But this prairie raised girl is having a lot of trouble
saying goodbye to the ocean.

Even though there’s nothing I have ever wanted more than to


embark on this journey that begins tomorrow.

When we roll down and lock the back door on that stuffed-full
Uhaul, buckle Juno into her car seat in our old SUV (Mav wants to
ride in the Uhaul, of course), and set off to spend a night at the hot
springs in the mainland on the way to our farm near the hot springs
in the mountains.

The farm with our names on the deed. And the mortgage.

That I still have not stepped foot on or in 🤯

But that’s giving me a chance to do what I truly believe is the most


important thing I can do with my life: become a steward of the land
and create a safe and loving home for my children.

Take care of the earth and become a good ancestor.

Live as free and autonomous as possible.

Because I know I’m not alone here when I tell you that it has been
getting hard AF for me to make good choices that are in alignment
with my values without taking radical responsibility for my life.

Mostly because so many of the truths of what’s actually going on in


this beautiful but troubled world are hidden behind smoke screens
and computer screens.

Can we take the precious cashew nut as an example, friend?

I used to be a vegetarian. (Because I thought that was the best way


to take care of the earth.)

And cashews used to be my favorite nut. It’s even on my website 🙈

They’re sweet and delicious and healthy, you don’t have to soak
them to turn them into milks and sauces (of course, they’re more
bioavailable if you do), and I don’t know if you’ve ever tried cashew
queso, boo, but I’m probably going to miss it the most.

I also used to luuurve me some cashews because using them


meant I didn’t have to support the large scale dairy industry and all
of its less-than-loving farming practices.
But I learned a couple of facts about cashews recently that have
me super stoked Colin’s so set on getting us a dairy cow 🐄 for the
farm:

1. Their shells are super toxic. In fact, the Daily Mail reported
in 2019 that “burns are a fact of life for up to 500,000
workers in India’s cashew industry.”
2. The (mostly) women who process them make less than
$7 a day. And you know they ain’t being treated right for that
$7.
3. The fruit of the cashew tree gets wasted as a by-product
of the cashing out on the nuts. Yup, because it doesn’t
travel well, the cashew apple gets tossed right into the
garbage.
Isn’t that shitty?
Not only are women in India, Vietnam, and the Ivory Coast being
burnt and exploited.
But the actual fruit – the apples – of the cashew tree are being
tossed into the garbage like so many stale bags of chips. When
they could be feeding hungry people. Or even fermented into
bubbly beverages. Ummm, cashew apple cider, hello?!
Well, I say enough is enough, [NAME]!
We can’t go on living this.
It’s time to take responsibility for our lives and our choices.
It’s time to do better, for goodness sake.
And I know that I’m extremely privileged to have the ability
to buy myself a farm so that I can adopt a cow (or two → I
don’t want her to be lonely, boo!) and milk her my own
darn self.
But I started out as a single mother living in my parents’ basement.
I started with a food blog, a couple of Upwork articles on foot
fungus and coconut oil, and a penchant for Cosmo magazine
quizzes.
I started out in this online biz world less than 7 years ago with some
natural talent, that I honed into an actual skill, then used to get
mahself a real-life, full-time job with a guru in need of an email list.
Truly, my greatest privilege (besides being born into a loving,
supportive, independent-thinking family with the means and the
inclination to keep me fed and warm no matter how jerky I was to
them in my teenage years) was stumbling upon the crazy lead gen
power of the almighty quiz.
Because when the first quiz I wrote got that guru 10, 000 email
leads in less than a month with a $500 ad spend, I knew I was
onto something.
So I took that something (that I’ve coined Interactive Empathy
Marketing → it’s an entire ecosystem, btw🌱) and turned it into
hundreds of thousands of leads and tens of millions of 💲 dolla dolla
bills 💲 for my 1:1 clients.
Then I started teaching other forward thinking, change making,
world saving people (just like you, [NAME]) how to take that
formula and turn it into epic email lists full of real, live human
beings.
Human beings who feel seen.
Who feel connected to your brand and mission.
Who are excited about investing in you and your offers.
Who stick with you and love you long time.
That’s all it takes to buy yourself a farm, friend. Or do whatever else
it is that makes you feel free and in charge of your life:
An email list full of people that you understand. That you can help.
And who love you.

Heck! Who become your friends.

Hosting a webinar is a great way to sell your course,


membership, program, or even a product or service.

The best way to use a webinar in a launch is to share


information and teachings that relate to the content in your
course or offer. Don’t be afraid to tease your offer throughout,
but make sure that the webinar itself is valuable and
actionable. Your Call to Action can either be to check out the
sales page, or — if it’s a larger ticket program — to book a call.

Free webinars give your audience a way to learn from you


without having to invest anything more than their time and
attention. They are also really excellent at getting the right
people to buy into your larger offers, because they give people
a chance to experience your teaching style and see if it
resonates and works for them.
How to use this template: this template is designed to help
you get started on the right track with your welcome
sequence. Use it as a framework, not a rulebook. Feel free to
add your own creative twists and turns as they come to you.

If you’ve been following along with the Lazy Launch

If someone would’ve told me 4 years ago that quizzes were my

What’s an upsell and why do you need one?

An upsell is an upgrade to a product that you only offer once a customer


has already committed to purchasing. Upselling is effective because
once someone has decided to invest, they are more emotionally invested
in making sure that they get the most out of value out of their decision.
An upsell is a great way to fill any gaps that your main offer might have,
but it shouldn’t be necessary to purchase to get the transformation that
your main offer promises.

How to plan your upsell:

● Decide how much time and energy you want to invest in your pre-
launch strategy

● Take a close look at your offer. Is there anything that you can sell as an
upsell that is not necessary for your main promise, but that will help
your ICA either save time, or save money, or simply create more ease
in their process, or give them more support?

● Take a close look at any other offers that you have. Is there anything
that would work in symbiosis with your main offer?

● Do your best to create to an offer that speaks to your ICAs goals but
make sure your main offer is irresistible even without it

Upsell Email Template


Strategy: Reiterate how stoked you are that they’ve invested in
your offer. Reiterate a bunch of the big benefits of what they’ve
already got coming to them. Agitate a pain point that your upsell
solves. Remind them that they can still get it, but create urgency by
emphasizing the deadline.

What’s a downsell and why do you need one?

A downsell is a lower priced offer for people who aren’t ready to invest in your
full offer but still would like to partake in the transformation you can create for
them. It’s also a good chance for people to experience the benefits that you can
provide and may lead to someone purchasing your full offer in the future.

Downsell examples:

● The Quick ‘n Dirty Quiz Course

● A pack of email templates for someone who didn’t buy your email
marketing course

● Packaging up some (or all!) of your bonuses

● Group coaching instead of 1-1 coaching

How to plan your downsell:

● Decide how much time and energy you want to invest in your downsell
strategy
● Consider the transformation/promise of your main offer, do you have
or can you make something that helps people achieve a similar
transformation with less effort on your part?

● Based on that, decide on your approach — example;


if you don’t want to spend very much time and
energy → package up your bonuses ; if you’re
offering a 3 month live course with coaching →

Your downsell exists to catch people who wanted


your help but weren’t quite ready for your larger

Your downsell launch will typically run for a shorter time than your full
launch and comes after your cart is closed. I’d recommend running your
downsell for three days, but remember: you can send more than one
email a day!

Remember to play around and get creative with these templates and
make sure that your tone matches your own brand!

TEMPLATE

STRATEGY: Address the fact that they did not purchase your course
in a fun and/or loving way. Conquer one of their biggest objections:
time! Call attention to the benefits of this smaller, more bitesize
offering. Showcase that it’s less expensive than your bigger course
without making them feel like you think they didn’t purchase the full
package because it was too expensive.

[Humorously or lovingly call out the elephant in the room: they


didn’t buy your course.]

[Introduce the idea that it’s likely because they’re too busy to take
