**Abstract**
This report details the industrial training experience gained over a three-
week period at Finco Automotive Service, Asaba, as part of the Student
Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES). The purpose of the training was
to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom
and practical application in the automotive service industry.
During the training, various tasks and activities were carried out, including
vehicle diagnostics, maintenance, and repair procedures. Emphasis was
placed on understanding the operation of mechanical systems such as
engines, transmission systems, and braking systems. Additionally, hands-on
experience in using specialized tools and equipment, as well as safety
protocols, was gained.
The report covers the detailed processes involved in engine tune-ups, oil
changes, brake adjustments, and troubleshooting techniques applied to
various vehicle models. Key challenges faced during the training were
highlighted, along with solutions employed to address them. The experience
provided an opportunity to develop technical skills, improve problem-solving
abilities, and gain valuable insights into automotive servicing.

**Description of Industry**
1. **Diagnostics Department**
The Diagnostics Department is responsible for identifying vehicle issues
using computerized diagnostic tools and manual inspection methods.
Technicians in this department use modern equipment to assess the health
of a vehicle’s engine, transmission, electrical system, and other critical
components. The diagnostic process is the first step in determining the
necessary repairs or maintenance required for each vehicle.
4. **Electrical Department**
The Customer Service Department acts as the point of contact between the
company and its clients. This department handles inquiries, bookings, and
follow-ups with customers. They ensure that clients are informed about the
status of their vehicles and are satisfied with the service provided. They also
handle invoicing and payments, making sure the business-customer
relationship runs smoothly.
description of the work done during your 4-week IT (SIWES) training at Finco
Automotive Service:
**Week 1**
1. **Introduction to Staff**
The first week began with an introduction to the staff members of Finco
Automotive Service. This was essential for familiarizing myself with the
company’s structure, understanding each team member’s role, and learning
about the workshop’s operational procedures. I was briefed on safety
protocols, tool usage, and how to handle different tasks efficiently.
The sterilizer linkage, which is a crucial part of the steering system, was
changed in a vehicle that had faulty steering control. This task involved
disassembling the steering components, identifying the damaged linkage,
and replacing it with a new one to restore proper steering function.
**Week 2**
I was involved in repairing the drive shaft of a Lexus car, which had issues
with the constant velocity (CV) joints. The damaged parts were replaced, and
the shaft was reinstalled to ensure smooth transmission of power from the
engine to the wheels.
I assisted in servicing and replacing the brake disc of a vehicle that had
uneven braking performance. The worn-out disc was removed, and a new
one was installed, followed by a test drive to confirm the effectiveness of the
braking system.
5. **Changing a Gearbox**
One of the more complex tasks of the week was changing a faulty gearbox.
I assisted in removing the old gearbox and installing a new one, ensuring
that all transmission components were properly aligned. After installation,
the gearbox was tested for smooth shifting and optimal performance.
**Week 3**
Routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes are vital to keeping the
engine running smoothly. I performed oil changes on several vehicles,
draining the old oil, replacing the oil filter, and refilling with fresh oil. This
process helps to maintain proper engine lubrication and extend engine life.
I assisted in changing the top gasket of a car. The gasket seals the cylinder
head to the engine block and prevents oil and coolant leaks. We removed the
cylinder head, replaced the damaged gasket, and reassembled the engine to
restore its optimal sealing.
I worked on fixing the gear selector of a car that had difficulty shifting
between gears. This involved diagnosing issues with the gear linkage and
repairing it to restore smooth gear transitions.
**Week 4**
I replaced the fuel filter in a vehicle to ensure that the fuel system was free
from contaminants. In the same vehicle, I worked on the fuel nozzle,
ensuring that the proper fuel flow was restored for efficient engine operation.
A car with valve issues was diagnosed, and I assisted in fixing the
damaged valves. This involved disassembling part of the engine, replacing
the faulty valves, and ensuring that the air and fuel mixture entered and
exited the engine cylinders correctly.
The rear drive shaft of a vehicle was repaired to address issues with power
transmission to the rear wheels. I assisted in replacing worn-out universal
joints and reinstalling the shaft, ensuring that the vehicle could transmit
power smoothly from the engine to the rear wheels.
4. **Changing the Chamber of a BMW**
One of the final tasks involved changing the chamber (camber angle
adjustment) of a BMW vehicle. This adjustment is crucial for proper wheel
alignment, ensuring that the wheels are set at the correct angle to optimize
tire wear and vehicle handling.
1. **Vehicle Diagnostics**
Through tasks such as fixing a knocked engine, changing top gaskets, and
replacing car engines, I gained a deeper understanding of engine
construction and operation. I learned the processes involved in dismantling
engines, diagnosing internal faults, and performing repairs to restore
functionality.
3. **Steering System Servicing**
Working on components like the steering rack and steering pump provided
me with practical knowledge of how steering systems function and the
importance of fluid systems in ensuring smooth and responsive vehicle
handling.
I gained practical skills in brake pad replacement, disc brake servicing, and
alignment. This experience helped me appreciate the critical role that
braking systems play in vehicle safety and performance.
Over the course of the training, I became proficient in using various tools
such as torque wrenches, jacks, alignment machines, and diagnostic
scanners. This practical exposure helped me develop the skills to safely and
effectively handle automotive equipment.
### **Discussion**
The industrial training experience at Finco Automotive Service was both
enriching and educational. It provided me with the opportunity to apply
classroom theory to real-world situations, deepening my understanding of
automotive systems. The training exposed me to a broad range of vehicle
types and repair scenarios, which allowed me to develop a versatile skill set.
### **Conclusion**
This conclusion summarizes the key benefits of your training and reflects on
its impact on your career path.
