THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE MUSIC
Think for a moment about the last music album you bought. Most likely, you’ll think of the singer or band that made
you want to buy the album. You might even know the name of the guitar player or the drummer. Those talented
performers, however, are only some of the people in the music industry work behind the scenes, but the roles they play
in the musical progress are very important.
Songwriters: Songs begin with the songwriter. Some songwriters work alone, but many work in teams that combine
the talents of a lyricist, who writes the words to songs, and an instrumentalist, often a piano player or guitarist, who
writes the music. Many of today’s pop stars work with songwriters. For example, some of Lady Gaga’s biggest hits
were written by Nadir Khayat, also known “RedOne”. Some songwriting teams have become very famous, such as
Mike Stock, Matt Aitken, and Pete Waterman, who were responsible for many big 1980s pop hits.
Arrangers: After a song has been written, music arrangers make it more appealing by deciding which instruments will
be used, what tempo, or speed, the song will have, and whether the song should have a lower or higher pitch. A good
arrangement can bring a song to life and make it a classic.
Trang 2
Studio Musicians: Not every singer or instrumentalist can be a star, and many work in the background as studio
musicians. These artists are not a part of any one musical group. Instead, they are hired for recording sessions that
eventually become the albums you buy, as well as soundtracks for television shows, movies, and radio ads.
Recording Engineers: Recording engineers also play a major role in creating the final sound that you hear. First, these
engineers set up the recording studio, the room where the performers play, placing musicians and microphones in
exactly the right places to get the best sound. Next, they use electronic equipment, such multi-track recorders, to
capture the music. Finally, long after the musicians have gone home, recording engineers use a mixing board to
balance the melodies and rhythms of each musician, and sometimes to incorporate special sound effects or additional
tracks. Many people make a living with music. You may not recognize all of their names, but all of them work together
to create the songs you love to listen to.

Marcel Bich, a French entrepreneur who manufactured traditional ink pens, revolutionized the ballpoint pen
industry by creating an affordable and high-quality writing instrument. Bich was shocked at the poor quality of the
ballpoint pens that were available, and also at their high cost. However, he recognised that the ballpoint was a firmly
established invention, and he decided to design a cheap pen that worked well and would be commercially successful.
Bich sought permission from the Biro brothers to use their original invention's design in one of his pens and offered
to compensate them for each pen sold. For two years, Bich meticulously studied the construction of every ballpoint pen
available, even using a microscope to aid him in his research.
In 1950, Bich introduced the Bic Cristal, a plastic pen with a transparent barrel that wrote smoothly, didn't leak, and
cost just a few cents. The public embraced the new pen, which became a practical writing instrument. In the UK, the
pens are still referred to as Biros, and some Bic models bear the name "Biro" on their side as a nod to their original
inventors.
Bich became extremely wealthy thanks to his invention, which had worldwide appeal. Over the next six decades, his

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions
Most people know that a balanced diet and regular exercise are very important. However, most people do not know
how to exercise properly. Exercising the right way is important for people who are worried about their health and their
appearance. However, if someone is not working out properly, it is rare that he or she will see the results he or she
wants. If you want to achieve the best workout results, here are a few helpful tips to bear in mind.
One of the most common workout mistakes is doing the same routine over and over again. This does not challenge
your muscles, and it can actually prevent muscles from growing and repairing themselves. Instead of always sticking to
the same old workout, it is important to change your routine every six to eight weeks. It is also important to add a
variety of workouts to your routine, such as swimming, yoga, or biking, to make sure your whole body stays fit.
Another mistake people tend to make is to work out too hard, too often. Your body needs to rest between workouts;
otherwise, no progress will be made. It is best to keep the number of hard workout routines to no more than two per
week. Then, for those who don’t want to get off schedule by skipping a day, shorter workouts of about twenty minutes
can be used on other days. For more variety In workouts, you could also plan an easier routine for forty to sixty
minutes between days of shorter, more intense workouts. Experts recommend, however, taking at least one day off
completely each week, especially after several hard workout days in a row. If you want to make a difference in your
overall health, there are some things you can do. Stretch before and after every workout. Do not rush your routine, and
do not work out too little or too much.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions
There are many mistakes that people make when writing their resume (CV) or completing a job application. Here are
some of the most common and most serious.
The biggest problem is perhaps listing the duties for which you were responsible in a past position: all this tells your
potential employers is what you were supposed to do. They do not necessarily know the specific skills you used in
executing them, nor do they know what results you achieved - both of which are essential. In short, they won’t know
if you were the best, the worst or just average in your position.
The more concrete information you can include, the better. As far as possible, provide measurements of what you
accomplished. If any innovations you introduced saved the organization money, how much did they save? If you
found a way of increasing productivity, by what percentage did you increase it?
Writing what you are trying to achieve in life - your objective - is a waste of space. It tells the employer what you are
interested in. Do you really think that employers care what you want? No, they are interested in what they want!
Instead, use that space for a career summary. A good one is brief - three to four sentences long. A good one will make
the person reviewing your application want to read further.
Many resumes list ‘hard’ job-specific skills, almost to the exclusion of transferable, or ‘soft’, skills. However, your
ability to negotiate effectively, for example, can be just as important as your technical skills.
All information you give should be relevant, so carefully consider the job for which you are applying. If you are
applying for a job that is somewhat different than your current job, it is up to you to draw a connection for the resume
reviewer, so that they will understand how your skills will fit in their organization. The person who reviews your
paperwork will not be a mind reader.
If you are modest about the skills you can offer, or the results you have achieved, a resume reader may take what you
write literally, and be left with a low opinion of your ability: you need to say exactly how good you are. On the other
hand, of course, never stretch the truth or lie.
Question 44. What topic does the passage mainly discuss?

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions from 21 to 27.
Most scientists agree that global warming presents the greatest threat to the environment. There is little doubt that the
Earth is getting warmer. In the last century the average temperature rose about 0.6 degrees C around the world. Many
experts warn that global warming will cause sea levels to rise dramatically. In the past 100 years the oceans have risen
10 to 20 cms- but that's nothing compared to what would happen if, for example, Greenland's massive ice sheet were to
melt.
Just as the evidence is clear that temperatures have risen in the last century, it's also well established that carbon
dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere has increased about 30 percent, allowing the atmosphere to trap too much heat.
However, the exact link, if any, between the increase in carbon dioxide emissions and the higher temperatures is still
being disputed. Most scientists believe that humans, by burning fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum, are largely to
blame for the increase in carbon dioxide. But some scientists also point to natural causes, such as volcanic activity.
The current rate of warming is faster than ever before, however, which suggests it probably is not a natural occurrence.
And a large number of scientists believe the rise in temperatures will, in fact, speed up. A recent study suggested that
Greenland's ice sheet will begin to melt if the temperature there rises by three degrees C. That is something many
scientists think is likely to happen in another hundred years. The complete melting of the Greenland ice cap would
raise sea levels by seven metres. Even a partial melting would cause a one-metre rise. Such a rise would have
a devastating impact on low-lying islands, such as the Maldives, which would be entirely submerged.
Other scientists emphasise that such doomsday scenarios may be hundreds of years in the future. 'You can't say with
any certainty that sea-level rises are going to have a huge impact on society,' says Stouffer. 'Who knows what the
planet will look like 5000 years from now?' Most climate scientists, however, agree that global warming is a threat that
has gone unchecked for too long. 'Is society aware of the seriousness of climate warming? I don't think so,' says
Marianne Douglas, professor of geology at the University of Toronto. 'Otherwise we'd all be leading our lives
differently. We'd see a society that used alternative sources of energy, with less dependence on fossil fuels.'

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to
each of the questions from 28 to 32.
When you wake up in the morning, do you assume that you're going to have a great day or that you're going to have a
difficult day? If you normally have positive expectations, you might consider yourself an optimist, and if your
expectations are usually negative, you may be a pessimist.
According to research done by the Mayo Clinic, optimism can have a strong positive effect on your health. Their
research shows that optimists may live longer, get colds less often, and be less likely to suffer from cardiovascular
disease. Optimists may even deal with stress better than pessimists do.
If you think you might be a pessimist and would like to try to be more optimistic, pay attention to what some call “self-
talk.” The term “self-talk” refers to the automatic thoughts that go through your head all the time. You know-the ideas,
worries, beliefs, and hopes that run through your mind as you're driving, washing dishes, folding laundry. Are those
thoughts negative like, “Everyone knows so much more than I do,” or positive like, “I'm learning a lot at this job”?
If your self-talk is negative, there are some things you can do to steer it in a more positive direction. First, you can
simply stop your negative self-talk. Every time you catch yourself thinking something negative, you can stop yourself
by actually saying, “Stop,” out loud. Alternatively, you can revise your self-talk. For example, if you catch yourself
saying, “I’m terrible at giving presentations,” revise that to a question like, “How can I improve my presentation
skills?” Another idea is to think of yourself as a friend. When you “hear” a negative sentence go through your mind,
think about whether or not you would feel comfortable saying it to a friend. If the sentence seems too mean to say to a
friend, think about what would sound better.
Câu 28. Which could be the best title for the passage?
A. Thinking negatively: Is it all bad? B. Treat yourself fairly!
C. Are you an optimist or a pessimist? D. Self-talk for health.
