HW March Week 4 Physics

The document provides definitions for key physics concepts including speed, velocity, acceleration, mass, and momentum. It also explains related terms such as friction, terminal velocity, and the law of conservation of momentum. Additionally, it covers principles of equilibrium, pressure, and the behavior of elastic objects.

Definitions

• Speed - distance travelled per unit time

• Velocity - change in displacement per unit time
• Acceleration - change in velocity per unit time
• Deceleration / Retardation - negative acceleration
• Mass - a measure of the quantity of matter in an object at rest relative to the observer
• Inertia - a tendency to do nothing or to remain unchanged
• Gravitational field strength - force per unit mass
• Density - mass per unit volume
• Friction - a force that opposes relative motion between systems in contact
• Terminal velocity - the highest velocity attained by an object falling through a fluid
• Thinking distance - the distance travelled by the car while the driver is reacting.
• Braking distance - the distance travelled by the car once the driver has put their
foot on the brakes
• Spring constant - force per unit extension
• Limit of Proportionality - The point beyond which the extension of an elastic
object is no longer directly proportional to the force applied to it.
• Moment - turning effect of a force
• Center of gravity - the point within an object where its weight is evenly balanced
in all directions
• Momentum -product of an object's mass and velocity
• Impulse - change of momentum of an object when the object is acted upon by a
force for an interval of time.
• The law of conservation of momentum - in an isolated system the total
momentum of two or more bodies acting upon each other remains constant
unless an external force is applied.
• Resultant force -change in momentum per unit time
• The principle of moments- If an object is balanced, the total clockwise moment
about a pivot equals the total anticlockwise moment about that pivot
• Equilibrium - state of rest, where there is no change
• Pressure - the amount of force exerted per area
