5. Evaluate dw/dt at t = 0, for w = x2 + y 2 , here x = sin t + cos t, and y = sin t − cos t.

6. Evaluate ∂w/∂s and ∂w/∂r at (s, r) = (1, 2), for w = (x + y + z)2 , here x = r − s, y =
cos(r + s), and y = sin(r + s).

7. Find the extreme values of the function

(a) f (x, y) = 2x3 + 2y 3 − 9x2 + 3y 2 − 12y


(b) f (x, y) = ex cos y
(c) f (x, y) = 2xy − x2 − 2y 2 + 3x + 4
(d) f (x, y) = 2x2 − 4x + y 2 − 4y + 1 on the closed triangular plate bounded by the
lines x = 0, y = 2, y = 2x in the first quadrant.

8. Find the local extreme values of f (x, y) = x2 y on the line x + y = 3.

9. Find the maximum value of xy, subject to the constraint x + y = 16.

10. Find the maximum and minimum values of x2 + y 2 subject to the constraint x2 − 2x +
y 2 − 4y = 0.
