COMMUNICATION MODES
WHAT IS A COMMUNICATION MODE?
- the channel through which one expresses his/her communicative intent
- the medium through which one conveys his/her thoughts
- can be in the form of face-to-face interaction, video/virtual, audio, or text-based
Modes of communication can be done through:
● Face-to-face interaction
● Video
● Audio
● Text-based

1. FACE-TO-FACE INTERACTION
- “Face-to-face communication is the most common of all communication modes.” - It
is an informal or casual conversation between two or more people.
- “People engage in social conversations to establish relationships or maintain them.” -
It is one way of gaining new acquaintances or friends.
- “How to speak, what to speak, when to speak, and whom one is speaking are all important
considerations in building relationships.”
ADVANTAGES OF F2F INTERACTION
- One advantage is that aside from directly hearing the message being conveyed, you are able to
note visual cue through facial expressions, gestures, movements, or even objects from the
person you are communicating with.
- Effective communication
- Instant feedback
- Informal and direct
- Confidential
- Delicate situation
DISADVANTAGES OF F2F INTERACTION
- Unsuitable for some people
- Unsuitable for large audience
- Not accountable
- Low legal and reference value
- Poor retention by the listener

HOW TO START A CONVERSATION?
- Focus on what you experience at the moment
- Topics should be sufficient
TOPIC INITIATION SHOULD BE FOLLOWED:
- Topic maintenance
- Topic change or shift
- Topic closure

2. VIDEO
- Web or phone cameras are used so that two or more people who cannot interact face-to-face
can communicate.
- This mode could be very effective especially for people separated by distance. -
The disadvantage of this mode is the time zone difference between countries.

ADVANTAGES OF VIDEO COMMUNICATION
- Reduces travel cost
- Enhances teamwork
- Improve communication

DISADVANTAGES OF VIDEO COMMUNICATION
- Can be harder to focus
- Time delay between responses
- The technology can fail
- Audio quality is poor

3. AUDIO
- Audio means “transmitted sound”
- In this communication, only the voice of the speaker is heard.
- No personal interaction.
- The disadvantage of this mode is when you listening to people with different accents.

ADVANTAGES OF AUDIO COMMUNICATION
- Easier to remember
- Helps keep mistakes at a minimum
- Easier to explain or put things in perspective
DISADVANTAGES OF AUDIO COMMUNICATION
- It's easier to lose focus
- No body language or cues
- Multitasking during calls
- “Vishing”

4. TEXT-BASED
- Social networking sites offer text-based interaction.
- It has a wider reach and can disseminate information for a bigger audience quickly. - The
disadvantage of this is it cannot provide actual representation of things being said or discussed.
ADVANTAGES OF TEXT-BASED COMMUNICATION
- Privacy
- Multiple conversation with multiple people simultaneously
- Allows people to be bold and expressive
- Respond in most convenient way
DISADVANTAGES OF TEXT-BASED COMMUNICATION
- More prone to accident
- Can be misunderstood
- Some cannot easily understand shorthand and abbreviations
- Limitation on characters that can be sent

way to new forms that make communication easier and faster

Old Forms of Communication
● Handwritten messages, typewritten messages, short telegrams, computer-encoded texts,
landline telephone conversations, and audio/video-recorded messages were used before
modern technology.
● Internet connectivity has replaced old communication methods, making communication
faster and more convenient.

Social Media Usage in the Philippines


● Filipinos spend an average of 4 hours and 15 minutes daily on social media, ranking highest
globally for the 6th consecutive year.
● The Philippines leads in both social media and internet usage, with significant increases in
e-commerce interest.

● The Philippines tops the world in internet usage, averaging 10 hours and 56 minutes per day.
● E-commerce adoption rate in the Philippines was 70% in 2020, with a growing interest in
online shopping for food and personal care products.
Concerns and Trends in the Philippines
● Filipinos are concerned about misinformation and 'fake news' online, surpassing the global
average.
● 38.2% of Filipinos worry about the use of their personal information online, higher than the
global average of 33.1%.

According to study by Miguel R. Camus
- Filipinos spend more time on social media sites than anyone else in the world going online
roughly 4 hours and 17 minutes a day.
- Filipinos spend most of their online time on sites such as facebook, snapchat and twitter.

US AMONG BOTTOM HALF


- Brazilians and Argentinians spend three hours and 43 minutes and three hours and 32 minutes
daily on social media, respectively.
- The United States is in the bottom half of countries, with Americans spending an average of just
over two hours per day on social media.
- The least active social media users are in Japan, where people log on for just 40 minutes daily.
- A cultural preference for text messaging in the past may explain high internet-based app usage
today in the Philippines, says telecom spokesperson Ramon Isberto.

SLOWEST IN ASIA-PACIFIC
- The Philippines has high social media usage despite having one of the slowest fixed-broadband
speeds in the Asia-Pacific region, though mobile connections are among the fastest.
- There appeared to be a relationship between poor fixed- broadband speed and time spent on
social media.
- The Philippines has an average fixed-line broadband speed of 4.2 mbps, while Brazil and
Argentina have speeds of 5.5 mbps and 5 mbps, respectively.
- The fastest was South Korea, with 26.3 mbps, and its citizens just spend about 1 hour and 11
minutes a day on social media.

INTERNET USE ON THE RISE


- Internet and social media users in the Philippines grew by over 25%, with an additional 13 million
and 12 million users, respectively.
- Mobile platforms now account for 38% of all web traffic in the Philippines, up by nearly a third
compared to 2016.
- The Philippines has a social media penetration rate of 58%, higher than the Southeast Asian
average of 47%.
- Around the world, internet users grew 10 percent, or an additional 354 million people, while
active social media users jumped 21 percent, or an additional 482 million.
- Global active netizens using mobile phones and other devices surged 30 percent, or another 581
million people.

DIGITAL CONNECTIVITY
- The total internet penetration rate stood at 50 percent, or 3.77 billion people. - "Half of the
world's population is now online, which is a testament to the speed with which digital
connectivity is helping to improve people's lives," said Simon Kemp, a consultant at We Are
Social.
- "The increase in internet users in developing economies is particularly encouraging," Kemp
added.
- The report compiles data from the world's largest studies of online behavior, conducted by
organizations including GlobalWebIndex, GSMA Intelligence, Statista, and Akamai in "a
comprehensive state" of social media reference.
- The 2016 report has been downloaded 70,000 times and read 2.5 million times on SlideShare so
far.
