COMMUNICATION MODES
WHAT IS A COMMUNICATION MODE?
- the channel through which one expresses his/her communicative intent
- the medium through which one conveys his/her thoughts
- can be in the form of face-to-face interaction, video/virtual, audio, or text-based
Modes of communication can be done through:
● Face-to-face interaction
● Video
● Audio
● Text-based
1. FACE-TO-FACE INTERACTION
- “Face-to-face communication is the most common of all communication modes.” - It
is an informal or casual conversation between two or more people.
- “People engage in social conversations to establish relationships or maintain them.” -
It is one way of gaining new acquaintances or friends.
- “How to speak, what to speak, when to speak, and whom one is speaking are all important
considerations in building relationships.”
ADVANTAGES OF F2F INTERACTION
- One advantage is that aside from directly hearing the message being conveyed, you are able to
note visual cue through facial expressions, gestures, movements, or even objects from the
person you are communicating with.
- Effective communication
- Instant feedback
- Informal and direct
- Confidential
- Delicate situation
DISADVANTAGES OF F2F INTERACTION
- Unsuitable for some people
- Unsuitable for large audience

- Topics should be sufficient
TOPIC INITIATION SHOULD BE FOLLOWED:
- Topic maintenance
- Topic change or shift
- Topic closure
2. VIDEO
- Web or phone cameras are used so that two or more people who cannot interact face-to-face
can communicate.
- This mode could be very effective especially for people separated by distance. -
The disadvantage of this mode is the time zone difference between countries.
3. AUDIO
- Audio means “transmitted sound”
- In this communication, only the voice of the speaker is heard.
- No personal interaction.
- The disadvantage of this mode is when you listening to people with different accents.
TYPES OF AUDIO COMMUNICATION

● Voice over internet protocol
● Conference phones

- Multitasking during calls
- “Vishing”
4. TEXT-BASED
- Social networking sites offer text-based interaction.
- It has a wider reach and can disseminate information for a bigger audience quickly. - The
disadvantage of this is it cannot provide actual representation of things being said or discussed.
ADVANTAGES OF TEXT-BASED COMMUNICATION
- Privacy
- Multiple conversation with multiple people simultaneously
- Allows people to be bold and expressive
- Respond in most convenient way
DISADVANTAGES OF TEXT-BASED COMMUNICATION

- Can be misunderstood
- Some cannot easily understand shorthand and abbreviations
- Limitation on characters that can be sent
SLOWEST IN ASIA-PACIFIC
- The Philippines has high social media usage despite having one of the slowest fixed-broadband
speeds in the Asia-Pacific region, though mobile connections are among the fastest.
- There appeared to be a relationship between poor fixed- broadband speed and time spent on
social media.
- The Philippines has an average fixed-line broadband speed of 4.2 mbps, while Brazil and
Argentina have speeds of 5.5 mbps and 5 mbps, respectively.
- The fastest was South Korea, with 26.3 mbps, and its citizens just spend about 1 hour and 11
minutes a day on social media.
DIGITAL CONNECTIVITY
- The total internet penetration rate stood at 50 percent, or 3.77 billion people. - "Half of the
world's population is now online, which is a testament to the speed with which digital
connectivity is helping to improve people's lives," said Simon Kemp, a consultant at We Are
Social.
- "The increase in internet users in developing economies is particularly encouraging," Kemp
added.
- The report compiles data from the world's largest studies of online behavior, conducted by
organizations including GlobalWebIndex, GSMA Intelligence, Statista, and Akamai in "a
comprehensive state" of social media reference.
- The 2016 report has been downloaded 70,000 times and read 2.5 million times on SlideShare so
far.
