Dear Manager,
1. I started to work for your company as a guide about six months ago. I know that it's my job to make sure that
everything goes well for the tourists and I do what I can to make them feel safe and comfortable. But something
quite unpleasant happened to me last weekend, though I don't think I must be blamed for this.
2. Last Saturday I met a group of Spanish tourists at the airport and took them to the bus. The bus driver has
been working for our company for about ten years. He is quite an experienced and patient person but this time
he was a bit annoyed. The reason was that the flight was two hours late and the driver had to wait longer than
usual. But it wasn't far to the hotel and the tourists were looking forward to their dinner as they were very tired
and hungry. We normally take our tourists to The Sunshine hotel, but this time it was hosting an international
conference and was fully booked. So I took the group to another hotel called The Edelweiss which I had booked
two days before and was sure my tourists would get rooms there as well as late dinner.
3. I hadn't used The Edelweiss hotel before and didn't quite know what kind of service they had. When I
announced our arrival at the reception desk, they said the hotel was full and didn't have a single place for our
group. Although I had booked rooms for the group beforehand, the manager said that somebody phoned a day
before and said that we didn't need the rooms any more. The manager insisted that he recognized my voice and
that it was I who made the phone call and cancelled the order. We had a bit of an argument but obviously the real
reason was that the hotel was full and couldn't have more guests. In the end the manager phoned other hotels in
the town and found rooms for my tourists, but in four different hotels. By this time the bus driver had gone so
we had to get taxis and some of the tourists started to get very angry with me.

4. I still don't know who made that phone call but it definitely wasn't me. I hope you will understand the
situation and won't blame me for what happened that day. I've learnt a lot while working at your company and
would like to continue doing the job.

Sincerely,
Sophia Blake

1. Margherita Taylor is the only female presenter at Capital Radio, one of London's top music radio stations. She got
into radio while she was a student in Birmingham. Along with hundreds of other hopefuls, she and a friend
queued for hours in the rain to take part in a 'Search for a Star' competition held by a local radio station,
BRMB. "I had to read a travel script and a weather script, talk about myself for a minute, then introduce a record."
Within days the phone call came to say that her voice had earned her a regular show on BRMB. Truly the stuff
dreams are made of. After working there for 18 months, she was offered a job with Capital.
2. Margherita claims never to get nervous before a show. "You can't get nervous because then you make mistakes,
she says. Of course, there has been the odd disaster. "For instance, when I did my first live concert show at BRMB, I'd
only done one programme. In front of a crowd of 50,000, I went on stage to introduce a certain well-known singer. I
said: "Please welcome our next performer. You know her best for hits like." Then I just went blank. There was this
silence from the crowd, and for the life of me I couldn't think what she'd sung. That's one occasion that will stay
with me for ever."
3. Margherita says that her own musical tastes are varied. But she doesn't pick her own music for the show. The
Capital computer selects the records in advance from a list approved by the station managers. "The station has a
certain sound, and if we all picked our own music, it wouldn't sound like Capital," she says."But for someone who
likes music, this is a dream job. I get to go to concerts and meet the bands you can hear on my show. It's great
to hear the "behind the scenes"gossip."
4. Most people would expect that a presenter's most important qualities are a nice voice and huge amounts of
confidence, but Margherita says that basic maths is handy as well. "You have to make sure that you've got an eye
on everything that's going on in the studio, but you've got to be able to add and subtract and think in minutes and
seconds," she says. "You're dealing with timed records, and you have to be ready to switch to the news at exactly
the right second. If you're going over to a live event, you need to be ready for that on time, not a second earlier or
later."
5. Margherita Taylor is very nice and very easy-going, but very much in control. She is so much a "Capital Radio girl"
that you might think she is just doing a good job for the station's publicity department, although you know what
she's saying really comes from the heart. She smiles a lot, laughs a lot and is generally a great advert for Capital.
Выберите один из предложенных вариантов ответа в соответствии с содержанием, приведенного
выше текста
A15. What do we learn about Margherita in the first paragraph?
1) She became a radio presenter by chance.
2) She expected to win the competition.
3) She was keen to become a radio presenter.
4) Her my friend offered her the job at the radio station.
A16. What do we learn about Margherita's first live concert show?
1) Being nervous was not the cause of the problem.
2) People often remind her of what happened then.
3) She was nervous and forgot the title of the song.
4) She went blank and fainted during her first live concert show.

A17. One point Margherita makes about her job is that

1) she is unhappy that the records she plays are chosen for her.
2) she likes most of the music that she plays on her show.
3) she enjoys talking to the people whose records she plays.
4) she has to select the records by herself.

A18. What does Margherita say about presenting a show?

1) It is essential to keep in mind what is going to happen next.
2) It is more complicated than she had previously thought.
3) The content of a show is sometimes changed suddenly.
4) A nice voice is all she needs to work at a radio station.

§1. Al and Nancy loved the great outdoors. They used every opportunity to go for long walks, taking with them their two
children, Alex and Ann. On that occasion they had decided to spend the day walking through Jasper National Park in
Alberta, Canada. Everything was perfect, the children, the early autumn weather. Until a sudden loud roar stopped
Nancy in her tracks. Coming towards her out of the trees was a giant grizzly bear. She screamed, then turned and ran
for the nearest pine tree. But she was hindered by the weight of her daughter on the back and slipped back to the
ground every time she tried to climb the tree. (A15) At last, in despair, she turned to look at the grizzly. But the bear
changed direction and disappeared into the trees where she had left her cub. Nancy then realized for the first time that
they were dealing with one of the most dangerous of all animals, a mother protecting her cub. And the bear was heading
straight in the direction of her husband and son!
§2. Young Alex gave a frightened scream, and his father turned to see the bear rushing towards him. Al tried to pull a
branch off a tree to use it as a weapon, but it wouldn't give way. He leapt to one side and the bear rushed past him. But
quick as a flash she turned and went for him again. This time Al couldn't get out of the way in time. The animal smashed
him to the ground, with Alex beneath him. Then the bear sank her teeth into Al's left leg. The pain was unbearable,
and for a moment Al thought he would faint. (A16)
§3. Al managed to struggle to his feet again despite the wounds in his left leg. For the second time the bear smashed
him to the ground, sinking its teeth into his right leg. Biting deep into his lip to fight off the pain, Al stamped his
left foot on to the nose of the angry bear. The bear backed off, turned and ran away among the trees. (A17)
Fortunately, Alex was unhurt. But both Al's legs were severely wounded. Nancy tore her blouse into strips and used
them as bandages for Al's legs. For hour after hour Nancy and Al tried to make their way through the forest in search of
help. Nancy carried one the children in her arms and the other on her back. Al had to crawl on his belly because he was
unable to use his legs. At last they came to an oil-pumping station, and Nancy burst into a hut where five men were
having a tea break. “Help! My husband's been attacked by a grizzly!” she screamed.
§4. The oilmen moved fast. Al was given first aid and then driven to the hospital in the nearby town of Jasper.
(A18) It took doctors two hours to repair his wounds. And it was two months before Al was fit enough to walk out of the
hospital. But Nancy and Al were not angry with the grizzly. Nancy said afterwards, “She was just protecting her cub, and
I was protecting mine”.

Karina Moore – teenage high diver!
§1. Several times a week, teenager Karina Moore trains at her local pool to jump from the high-diving board into the
water – in an attempt to become a national diving champion. Karina first learned about diving during a family break in
Spain, where the resort’s pool had a high-diving board. Young people were diving off it, and it looked fun, but Karina
didn’t join in, even though she was a strong swimmer. Then after returning home, she discovered a long-distance
runner she’d always admired had started diving for relaxation – so she became more interested. (A15)
§2. Karina joined a beginners’ diving class at her local pool. They had several sessions jumping onto soft materials
before trying the high board. ‘The water looked a long way down,’ says Karina, ‘but after our training, I felt I’d handle
it – without injuring myself. (A16)They’d warned me I’d land in the water fast – at around 60 kph – but I was
prepared. I couldn’t wait to get started – although the others weren’t so keen! Anyway, I wasn’t disappointed by the
experience.’
§3. In Karina’s area, there is lots of interest in high diving, but it’s sometimes difficult for swimmers to find suitable
practice facilities. Although the pools are deep enough, they’re in use so often by diving clubs that other people
don’t get opportunities to practise. (A17) Fortunately, though, Karina’s coach noticed her talent and helped her
develop her techniques. After also two years, she’s winning competitions in her area.
§4. But what’s it like to concentrate so much on diving? ‘I train 20 hours a week’ says Karina, ‘and I won’t pretend it’s
easy – you have to enjoy it to spend so much time doing it! It’s not easy for my parents either, though – they drive me to
training sessions early in the morning, and that costs money. But they’re had financial help from sports organizations
luckily. And my schoolwork and social life are good. I still meet my mates – and there’s always the phone! The only
thing I hadn’t realised was that the pool water would damage my hair (A18) – I used to love my long hair, but I’ve
had to cut it short because it looked awful! But I’ll definitely keep on diving!’
