Globalization

and Religion
Prepared By: Ken M. Villamartin, MPA
Religion and Globalization: New Possibilities,
Furthering Challenges
❖Religion - “system of beliefs and practices.”
❖It comes from the Latin “religare” which means “to
bind together again that which was once bound but
has since been torn apart or broken.
❖Relationship between religion and globalization is
complex, one with new possibilities and furthering
challenges.

Religion and Globalization: New Possibilities,
Furthering Challenges
❖Globalization engenders greater religious tolerance
across areas such as politics, economics, and society.
❖Globalization disrupts traditional communities,
causes economic marginalization, and brings
individuals mental stress, all of which create a
backlash of religious parochialism.
❖Globalization brings religions to a circle of conflicts
that reinforces their specific identities.

Religion and Globalization: New Possibilities,
Furthering Challenges
❖Globalization brings a culture of pluralism,
meaning religions “with overlapping but
distinctive ethics and interests” interact with
one another.
❖The world’s leading religious traditions—
Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and
Islam—teach values such as human dignity,
equality, freedom, peace, and solidarity.

❖ In political areas, globalization has built global
political forums that integrate cultural, ethnic,
and religious differences—ideologies that were
once perceived as dividing the world—through
a large number of international organizations
such as the United Nations (UN) and the
World Health Organization (WHO), as well
regional organizations like the European
Union (EU), the Organization of the Islamic
Conference (OIC), or the African Union (AU).
Religion and Globalization: New Possibilities,
Furthering Challenges

❖Since globalization is considered as

“the first truly world revolution,” “all
revolutions disrupt the traditions and
customs of a people”—that is, “people’s
very security, safety, and identity.

Religion and Globalization: New Possibilities,
Furthering Challenges
❖Globalization breaks down traditional
communities and replaces them with
larger, impersonal organizations.
❖Globalization brings economic
marginalization.
❖Globalization causes mental stress.

Positive Impacts of Globalization on Religion
Spread of Religious Ideas
✓Globalization facilitates the dissemination of
religious ideas and practices across the world. This
is evident in the global presence of religions like
Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism.
✓Technologies such as the internet and social media
enable religious communities to connect, share
teachings, and reach new adherents globally.

Positive Impacts of Globalization on Religion
Interfaith Dialogue
✓Globalization encourages interaction between different
religious groups, promoting interfaith dialogue and
understanding. This can lead to greater tolerance and
cooperation among diverse religious communities.
✓Events such as interfaith conferences and international
religious gatherings are more feasible, fostering a global
sense of shared human values and ethics.

Positive Impacts of Globalization on Religion
Religious Pluralism and Diversity
✓Migration and international travel introduce
religious diversity into new regions, enriching
cultural landscapes. Cities around the world
now host multiple religious communities,
creating multicultural and multi-religious
environments.

Challenges and Tensions
Religious Conflicts and Fundamentalism
✓Globalization can exacerbate religious conflicts, as
increased interaction sometimes leads to clashes between
differing belief systems. Religious fundamentalism can
arise in reaction to perceived threats from other cultures
and religions.
✓The spread of extremist ideologies is facilitated by
global communication networks, posing security
challenges worldwide.
https://tinyurl.com/y4jhdfft
Challenges and Tensions
Secularization
✓In some cases, globalization promotes
secularization, where religious influence on public
life diminishes in favor of secular values and
practices. This can lead to tensions between secular
and religious groups.
✓The spread of consumerist and materialist values
through global media can undermine traditional
religious beliefs and practices.
https://tinyurl.com/y4jhdfft
Challenges and Tensions
Cultural Homogenization
✓The dominance of certain cultures and religions in the
global arena can lead to cultural homogenization, where
smaller or indigenous religions may struggle to
maintain their distinct identities.
✓Religious traditions may be commercialized or diluted
as they adapt to appeal to broader, global audiences.

Religious Harmony: A Fresh Concept in the Age of Globalization

To promote religious harmony, we need to advocate

the idea of “harmony without uniformity.” There is
one saying in the Doctrine of the Mean of the
Book of Rites which goes,” All things on earth
grow together without one doing harm to another
and all doctrines in the world develop in parallel
with each other without coming into conflict.”

Positive Impacts of Globalization to Religious Organizations

1. Global Reach and Expansion – which enables religious

organizations to extend their reach beyond local or
national boundaries.
2. Interfaith Collaboration - Religious organizations
increasingly engage in interfaith dialogue and
collaboration, addressing global issues such as poverty,
climate change, and human rights.
3. Resource Mobilization - Globalization facilitates the
mobilization of financial and human resources from a
global pool.

Globalization and Religious Organization

❖Globalization offers religious organizations numerous

opportunities for expansion, collaboration, and resource
mobilization, but it also presents significant challenges
related to identity, competition, and secularization.
Navigating these complexities requires religious
organizations to balance tradition with modernity,
engage in constructive interfaith dialogue, and adapt to a
rapidly changing global landscape while maintaining
their core values and mission.
