6. Read the following passage about electric bicycles and answer the questions that follow.
Some bicycles use a motor to assist the movement of the pedals. They are called electric bicycles. When you push
the pedal, the motor in the bicycle gives you a boost. The harder you pedal, the bigger the boost, and the faster
you ride. To prevent the bicycle from getting too fast, a sensor is installed to monitor your speed. The sensor will
instruct the motor to turn the pedal assist off when you reach a speed limit.

The motor in electric bicycles is powered by a battery. How long a battery can last depend on the power the motor
draws and the capacity of the battery. The battery can be charged by plugging it into a mains socket, and the
charging time ranges from 2 to 8 hours, depending on the model of the battery.
(a) The power delivered by the battery is never fully converted into the kinetic energy of the bicycle and the
cyclist. State two causes of power loss. (2 marks)

how long the motor is turned on before the speed limit is reached. Assume 50% of the power is
wasted during pedalling. (2 marks)
