1 Introduction
Parted Magic is an open source that designed for disk partitioning, cloning and back up. Download the .iso from http://partedmagic.com/download.html and create the bootable CD/DVD using the .iso file. The version used is Parted Magic 5.5, tested on Linux operating system.
2 Backup
Insert the parted magic CD/DVD into the bootable CD/DVD drive of the computer and run the BIOS setup/configuration menus to make the bootable CD/DVD drive in higher boot order than other bootable device. Then, the Parted Magic boot option will be displayed:
Use and key to select the boot option and press enter. You may use the default setting, which runs from RAM.
Once boot option is chosen, the operating system will start to load:
Various drive in the computer will be displayed on the left most pane. Click on the drive that you wish to place the backup file and the content of the drive will be displayed on the right pane. Right click on the right pane to create new folder, where the backup file should be placed. In this example, the backup file will be placed in the folder parted_magic
Close the PC Man File Manager and click on the Parted Magic button on the bottom left of the taskbar and select System Tools Clonezilla.
Instruction: Use and to choose the option, and key to switch between OK and Cancel. Press Enter key to confirm. Press Space bar to mark selection. Select device-image to backup using images.
If you wish to backup the image to the external USB drive, you may attach the drive now and press enter after few seconds.
Next, choose the device that Parted Magic should backup the file to. In this example, the 8587MB drive is where the operating system resides and the 160GB drive is where we wish to have Clonezilla put the set of backup files that it will be creating.
It will then display the list of directories/files of the drive. Select the directories that created earlier, in this example, the directory is parted_magic:

There is default filename assigned to the image, you may change the name if you wish to save the image as another name:

The command line of the configuration performed will be displayed. Press enter to continue with the backup:

In this example, NFS server will be used. To backup the image of your drive to remote server, it is required to start a network on the Parted Magic operating system. Click on the Start Network icon on the desktop and it will prompt the start network option. You may use DHCP or configure the network manually.

Again, click on the Parted Magic button on the bottom left of the taskbar and select System Tools Clonezilla.

Input the NFS path that Parted Magic should mount to:
Upon successfully mounted, the file system disk usage will be displayed. Press Enter to continue:

3 Restore
In future, you may restore the system using the image file that backup earlier. To restore, it is needed to boot the Parted Magic operating system, steps are described on page 5.
