DEVELOPMENT SOFTWARE 2A- QUESTION BANK

1. What is a Database? Why do we need databases?

A database is a shared, integrated computer structure that stores a collection of end user
data and metadata.
- In today’s world, data is ubiquitous (abundant, global, everywhere) and pervasive
(unescapable, prevalent, persistent)
- Databases make data persistent and shareable in a secure way
- Business prosperity is based on the collection, storage, aggregation, manipulation,
dissemination, and management of data
2. With the aid of examples, differentiate between data and information
-data consist of raw facts. Raw indicates that the facts have not yet been processed to
reveal their meaning….eg hundreds of rows of data for faculty members does not provide
much insight into the overall makeup of the faculty.
-information is the result of processing raw data to reveal its meaning. To reveal meaning,
information requires context. Data summary for the faculty members can provide
accrediting bodies
3. What is a Database Management System (DBMS)? Discus the role and advantages of DBMS
-a database management system (DBMS) is a collection of programs that manages the
database structure and controls access to the data stored in the database.
 Roles and advantages include:
 Improved data sharing
 Improved data security
 Better data integration
 Minimized data inconsistency
 Improved data access
 Improved decision making
 Increased end user productivity
4. Discuss five (5) types of Databases
 Single user database
 Desktop database
 Multiuser database
 Workgroup database
 Enterprise database
 Centralized database
 Distributed database
 Cloud database
 General purpose database
 Discipline specific database
 Operational database
 Online transaction processing database (OLTP)
 Transaction database
 Production database

5. Discuss five (5) problems with file system data processing

 Lengthy development times
 Difficulty of getting quick answers
 Complex system administration
 Lack of security and limited data sharing
 Extensive programming

6. What is Data Redundancy? Discuss the implications of Data Redundancy

 Data redundancy exists when the same data is stored unnecessarily at different
places.
 Implications are:
o poor data security
o data inconsistency
o data entry errors
o data integrity problems
7. What is a data anomaly? Discuss the 3 common data anomalies
 A data anomaly develops when not all of the required changes in the redundant
data are made successfully.
 3 Common data anomalies are:
o Update anomalies
o Insertion anomalies
o Deletion anomalies
8. A DBMS performs several important functions that guarantee the integrity and consistency
of the data in the database. Discuss the functions of the DBMS
o Data dictionary management
o Data storage management
o Data transformation and presentation
o Security management
o Multiuser access control
o Backup and recovery management
o Data integrity management
o Database access languages and application programming interfaces
o Database communication interfaces
9. What is a data model? Discuss the importance of Data Models
A data model is a relatively simple representation usually graphical of more complex real
world data structures.
o Data models are a communication tool
o Give an overall view of the database
o Organize data for various users
o Are an abstraction for the creation of a good database
10. What is Business Rule? Discuss five (5) sources of Business rules
A business rule is a brief, precise and unambiguous description of a policy, procedure or
principle within a specific organization.
Sources of business rules include:
 Company managers
 Policy makers
 Department managers
 Written documentation
 Direct interviews with end users
11. Discuss the reasons for identifying and documenting business rules
 Help standardize company’s view of data
 Communications tool between users and designers
Allow designer to:
 Understand the nature, role, scope of data, and business processes
 Develop appropriate relationship participation rules and constraints
 Create an accurate data model

12. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of storing derived attributes

13. Define the following: Functional dependence, Determinant, Full Functional dependence,
Referential integrity, candidate key, superkey, candidate key.
14. Differentiate between a weak relationship and a strong relationship

15. What are the characteristics of Big Data? Discuss three big data challenges
Characteristics
a. Volume
b. Velocity
c. Variety
Challenges include:
 Volume does not allow the use of conventional structures
 Expensive
 OLAP tools proved inconsistent dealing with unstructured data

vvVolume does not allow the usage of conventional structures

Volume does not allow the usage of conventional structure
