LESSON 1: REVIEW ON FUNCTION


What is function?

Function is a relation defines as a set of order pairs ( x , y ) where each element in the domain
is related to only one value in the range by some rule. We usually represent a function by the
equation y=f (x ) where y is the dependent variable (domain) and x is the independent variable
(range).
Take note that for every input (domain), there corresponds a unique output (range).
Functions may be described using sets of ordered pairs, equations, or graphs.
Function Represented by a Set of Ordered Pairs
A set of ordered pairs represents a function, if no two ordered pairs have the same first
coordinate.
EXAMPLES: Determine whether each relation is a function.
a. A={( 1 , 3 ) , ( 2 , 4 ) , ( 3 , 5 ) } FUNCTION
b. B={ ( 100 ,1 , 500 ) , ( 200 ,3000 ) , ( 223 , 3345 ) } FUNCTION
c. C={ ( 1 , 3 ) , ( 2 ,−6 ) , ( 2, 5 ) , ( 3 ,5 ) } NOT FUNCTION
d. D={(−1 , 0)(0 ,−3)(2 ,−3)(3 , 0)(4 , 5)} FUNCTION
e. E={(6 , 10)(−7 ,3)(0 , 4)(6 ,−4)} NOT FUNCTION

THE VERTICAL LINE TEST
 VERTICAL LINE TEST –is a test used to determine if the graph is a function or not.
 A graph is a function if the vertical line test intersects the graph in only one point.
 A graph is not a function if the vertical line test intersects/passes in two or more points.
Types of Function
1. Polynomial Functions
A polynomial function is a function that involves only non-negative integer powers or only
positive integer exponents of a variable in an equation like the quadratic equation, cubic
equation, etc. ... A polynomial function, in general, is also stated as a polynomial or polynomial
expression, defined by its degree.
Examples:
a. g ( x )=16 x 2−16 x+ 7
b. f ( x )=12 x 4 −3 x 3 +3 x 2−1 this is a 4th degree polynomial function in x
c. g ( x )=3 x 7−x 4 +8 x 2−x +9 this is the 7th degree polynomial function in x
2. Constant Function
A constant function is a special type of linear function that follows the form f(x) = b , 'b' is the y-
intercept of the line and is just a constant(number). The graph of this function is horizontal line
and the slope is zero.
Examples:
a. f ( x )=7
b. f ( x )=−1
3. Linear Function
It is a polynomial function with degree of 1. It is in the form f ( x )=mx+b , where m is the slope,
and b is the y-intercept. The graph of every linear function is always a straight slanting line.
Examples:
a. f ( x )=2 x +3
b. g ( x )=8 x−4
c. h ( x )=30 x−20
4. Quadratic Function
Quadratic function is a function that can be described by an equation of the form

f x=a x +bx + c, where a ≠ 0. The greatest power of the variable is 2. The graph of a quadratic
function is a parabola.
Examples:
a. f ( x )=2 x 2 +3
b. g ( x )=3 x 2+5 x−4
5. Cubic Function
A cubic function has the standard form of f(x) = ax3 + bx2 + cx + d. The highest power over
the x variable(s) is 3. Cubic functions are represented by curves passing through (0, 0) with
turning points.
Examples:
a. f ( x )=2 x 3 +3
b. g ( x )=3 x 3+5 x 2 +2 x −4

LESSON 2: EVALUATING FUNCTIONS

To evaluate a function means to find the value of the output f (x), given the input x .
Example 1: If f ( x )=4 x 2−5 x+ 3, evaluate the following:
