Polynomial functions
Polynomial functions
The terms of a polynomial may be
written in any order. However, if they are
written in decreasing powers of x, we
say the polynomial function is in
standard form.
Examples:

Learning Targets:
Understand what is an intercept.
Learning Targets:
Find the x – and y – Intercepts of
the given function.
Intercepts
There are two types of intercepts, the x – intercept and
the y – Intercept. Intercepts are the points where the
graph of polynomials intersects with the axes.
X – intercept
It is the point where the graph intersect with the x –
axis.

Every x – intercept is a point where the value of y = 0

(X , 0)
Y – intercept
It is the point where the graph intersect with the y –
axis.

Every y – intercept is a point where the value of x = 0

(0 , Y)
How do we find the x – and y –
intercepts?
To find the y – intercept, we just use 0
as the value of our X and solve for Y
To find the x – intercept, we just use 0
as the value of our Y and solve for X

ZER OS
What is a ROOT/ZEROS?

Those are the Values that will make the

Function Equal to ZERO
ZEROS are very related to the x –
intercept because the process of finding
the x – intercept is the SAME with the
process of finding the ZEROS of a
Function.
What is MULTIPLICITY?

is the EXPONENT of each factored form.

What is MULTIPLICITY?

It tells us HOW MANY TIMES a zero

occurs in the given polynomial function.
What is MULTIPLICITY?

It also tells us the behavior of a graph

whether it CROSSES or just TANGENT
with the x – intercept.
What do MULTIPLICITY tell us?

If the multiplicity of a zero is ODD, the

behavior of the graph is it CROSS
passing through the x – intercept.
What do MULTIPLICITY tell us?

If the multiplicity of a zero is EVEN, the

behavior of the graph is it TANGENT
passing through the x – intercept.

Assignment: Identify the zeros, the
multiplicity of the roots, the
characteristics of the multiplicity, and
