Quick and Handy Grammar Review: Subject, Object, and Relative Pronouns
Pronouns are short words that stand in for nouns. Pronouns refer to nouns that have
already been mentioned. They have many uses.
We will analyze the first three types in this unit and the last four in the next one.
Subject The Wright brothers liked bicycles. They were also interested in flying.
(They replaces The Wright brothers.)
Part of compound subject Wilbur and he were willing to try almost anything.
Reina and you are working hard.
My kids and I speak Spanish and English.
Use the subject case for predicate pronouns. A predicate pronoun follows a linking verb
and renames, or refers to, the subject. Remember that the most common linking verbs are
forms of the verb be and include is, am, are, was, were, been, has been, have been, can
be, will be, could be, and should be

⦁ I is the only pronoun that is always capitalized. The other pronouns are capitalized only

⦁ When I is combined with another subject, I goes second (example: Maria and I are good
when they are the first word in the sentence.
⦁ In English, there is no second person plural form. You is used for both singular and plural.
For example, Hank and me went to the game is a mistake.
⦁ Unlike many other languages, there is no distinction in address in English; that is, there
are no familiar and formal forms for the word you. You is used when speaking to an animal
⦁ The distinction between masculine, feminine, and neuter forms (he, she, and it) in the

Subject Pronouns
A. Choosing Subject Pronouns Fill in the blanks in the following sentences with appropriate
subject pronouns. Vary the pronouns you use, and do not use the pronoun you.
• My brother and I are doing a lot of tasks and ________ need to take a break.
• Martina is a professional chef. _________ is making dinner.

Notes:
⦁ All object pronouns are in lowercase unless they are the first word in a sentence.

Relative Pronouns:

which that, may be used.

Whom is used in very formal English, more often in writing than in speaking.
The old woman whom we saw is the business manager.
Use as a possessive-always followed by a noun.
