Algebraic Solutions to Linear Systems –Review

EXAMPLE

Solve and check: x + y = 3, x – y = 1

Step 1: Subtract second equation from first

x+y=3
(-) x – y = 1
0 + 2y = 2

Step 2: Find value of y: 2y = 2 ; y = 2/2 = 1

Step 3: Insert the value of y in any of the equation and find the value of x:
x + 1 = 3; x = 3 - 1 = 2

Step 4: Answer: x = 2, y = 1

Practice this skill by completing the problems below

Solve and check:

3x + 1y = 5 x + 2y = 10
1. 2.
2x - y = -1 x - 3y = -12

4y - z = -3 x + 3y = 4
3. 4.
y+z=7 x – 2y = 14

x + 2y = 1 3x - y = -11
5. 6.
-x + y = 5 x+y=7

Thanksgiving Linear Equations
Name: ________________________ Period: ____
Part 1 - Mr. Moloney has just started planning for his Thanksgiving dinner
and he only has two days left to shop! Because he is so busy at work, he needs
some help shopping and comparing prices of turkey at two different local
stores.
At Safeway, the turkey he wants to buy is $1.99 per pound, but the delivery
price would be a flat fee of $4.99. Wegmans, which is on his way home from
work, charges $2.59 per pound. Can you help Mr. Moloney decide which
turkey to buy?
1. Write a linear equation that models the cost of buying a turkey at Safeway:

2. What is the slope of this equation? What is the y-intercept?

3. Write a linear equation that models the cost of buying a turkey at Wegmans:

4. What is the slope of this equation? What is the y-intercept?

5. Graph your two linear equations from 6. At what weight will the Safeway turkey and
questions 1 and 3. Please label the x and y axis the Wegmans turkey cost the same? Please
with units and indicate which line show your work graphically or algebraically.
corresponds to each grocery store:

7. If Mr. Moloney wants a 6 pound turkey,

which store should he shop at? Why?

8. If Mr. Moloney needs a 15 pound turkey,

which store should he shop at? Why?
Part 2 - Help Plan Friendsgiving!
Adarsh and his friends from the soccer team are planning a potluck
to celebrate Thanksgiving together this year. Everybody is going to
bring a different dish to dinner over the weekend. Adarsh signed up
to bring a main dish and his mom said she would help him make
lamb biryani to bring, but he needs to help her figure out how much
rice and lamb they need. According to her recipe, ½ pound of lamb
and ½ cup of basmati rice is needed for each serving. Adarsh looks in
the pantry and sees that they already have 3 cups of rice at home.

1. Write an equation that models the amount of lamb needed for

the potluck depending on the number of people, x, who will
be eating at dinner.

2. Write an equation that models how much rice Adarsh needs to buy for the potluck:

3. Graph your two linear equations from 4. Adarsh’s friend texted him and said that there
questions 1 and 2. Please label the x and y axis would be 25 people attending Friendsgiving!
with units and indicate which line How much lamb will they need to buy?
corresponds to rice or lamb:

5. How much rice do they need to buy?

6. Thanks for helping plan two Thanksgiving celebrations! What traditions does your family or friends
have around this time of year?

Linear Equations: Number of Solutions

Linear equations can have one solution, no solution, or infinitely many solutions.

One Solution No Solution Infinitely Many Solutions

If an equation is true for a If an equation is false for all If an equation is true for all
single value of the variable, values of the variable, then it values of the variable, then it
then it has exactly one solution. has no solution. has infinitely many solutions.

Example Example Example

5x ‒ 4 = 6 2c ‒ c = 5 + c 3s ‒ 2s = s
5x ‒ 4 + 4 = 6 + 4 c=5+c s=s
5x = 10 c‒c=5+c‒c s‒s=s‒s
5x
__ 10 0=5
= __ 0=0
5 5
x=2 You get a false statement, You get a true statement,
0 = 5, when solving this 0 = 0, when solving this
The value x = 2 is the only equation. No matter what equation. No matter what value
value of x that makes the value is substituted for c, the is substituted for s, the equation
equation 5x ‒ 4 = 6 true. equation 2c ‒ c = 5 + c is false. 3s ‒ 2s = s is true.

Practice it! Determine if each equation has one solution, no solution,

or infinitely many solutions. Write your answer on the blank.

6 + 9r = 9r + 6 2b ‒ 5 = 9 –2q ‒ 3 = –2q ‒ 8

8p ‒ 1 = 1 + 8p 4 + 7c = 11 –4n = –7n + 3n

6e ‒ 10 = 10 ‒ 2e + 10e 4(x ‒ 5) = 4x ‒ 20 2(3g + 1) = 3g + 1 + 3g

_________________________ _________________________ _________________________

8 + 5(f ‒ 2) = 2f ‒ 2 + 3f –8 ‒ 4p = 5(p + 2) 8m ‒ 4 ‒ 2m = 3(2m ‒ 1)

Finding Intercepts of Linear Equations

Intercepts are points on a graph where a line intersects the x - axis and/or the y - axis.

x - intercept: y=0 ( 4,0 )

y - intercept: x=0 ( 0,4 )

To find the intercepts from an equation, first substitute 0 for x and solve for y. Then substitute
0 for y and solve for x .

example: x + 2y = 7 0 + 2y = 7 x + 2 (0) = 7
y = 3.5 x = 7
x - intercept: ( 7,0)
___________
y - intercept: (0, 3.5 )
___________ (0, 3.5 ) ( 7,0)

Solve to find the x -intercept and y -intercept for each equation.

1. 2 x + 9y = 18

x - intercept: __________________

y - intercept: __________________

2. - 5 x + 4 y = 20

x - intercept: __________________
