Notes 3.3

The document explains the concepts of melting and solidifying, defining change of state as the transformation of materials between forms due to heating or cooling. It describes physical processes as changes in form without altering the substance, providing examples like melting ice-cream and chocolate. Additionally, it details how solids become liquids through energy gain and how liquids become solids through energy loss.

Answer the following questions.

1) What do you mean by change of state?

Ans. Most materials and substances can change from one
form to another when they are heated or cooled. This is
called change of state. For eg. Water → ice (on cooling)
Ice → water (on heating)
2. What is a physical process? Give examples.
Ans. Change of state is called physical process. Substance
only changes its form, not into a different substance.
For eg. Melting of an ice-cream, candle, chocolate, ice etc.

3. How solids change into liquids on heating?

Ans. The particles of a solid gain energy on heating. This
makes the particles move faster and move away from
each other. Then, the solid melts and becomes a liquid.

4. How liquids change into solids on melting?

Ans. The particles of a liquid loose energy on cooling.
This makes the particles slow down and move closer
together. Then, the liquid becomes a solid.
