1.1.5 In your opinion why is it important for the government to know the
population growth rate?

 In order for the government to conduct planning on resources that citizens


will require in the future.
 The plan about the construction of facilities like infrastructure, education and
health projects.
 Governments also need to know how old the population is and will be in the
coming years to plan for pensions.
 The government needs that information for budgeting purposes when
addressing socio-economic issues.
 It can assist in policy outcomes in a number of areas, such as assessing
programmes on gender equity, the ageing population and infant, children
and productive groups or planning, monitoring and evaluating housing,
health and welfare programmes.
 Data can also be used as a baseline for other essential statistical
information, like electricity supply and demand or for delineating electoral
districts.

 Raw materials/natural resources-Areas with a wealth of natural resources
such as gold, coal or other minerals may have higher population densities
than areas which do not have. ✓✓
 Economic - more people live where there are more jobs or are attracted

 Infrastructure: More people tend to migrate to places with better
infrastructure, leaving places with poor infrastructure. ✓✓
 Political - government investment in an area can improve the infrastructure

 Social - the better the housing, education and services the more people are
