What is computer based instruction (CAI)?
is a dynamic, interactive instructional
method that leverages the power of
technology to enhance learning and
development (L&D). This method of
instruction utilizes computer technology
to deliver educational content, allowing
for individualized learning, immediate
feedback, and the ability to adapt to each
learner’s pace and style of learning.

Computer-assisted instruction
Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) is a form of
education that uses computers and other digital
technologies to deliver instructional content and
provide feedback to students. It is designed to
supplement or replace traditional classroom
instruction and can be used for a wide range of
subjects and grade levels.
02
Early Developments
The first CAI systems were rudimentary, often
consisting of simple drill-and-practice programs.
These programs used a linear teaching approach,
where learners would progress through a series of
predetermined steps or lessons. Despite their
simplicity, these early CAI systems were
revolutionary for their time, providing the
foundation for the development of more advanced
instructional technologies.

Moderm Developments
With the advent of the internet and multimedia
technologies, CAI has evolved to incorporate a wide range of
instructional methods and media. Modern CAI systems can
deliver rich, multimedia content, including text, images,
audio, video, and interactive simulations. These systems also
support a variety of instructional methods, including
tutorials, drills, problem-solving exercises, and games.

5 types of computer-assisted
instruction or Cai:
Tutorials
Drills
Simulations
Instructional Games
Problem-Solving exercises
04
Tutorials
Tutorials are one of the most common types of CAI. Tutorials
provide step-by-step instructions for completing a task or
learning a concept. Tutorials are often used for teaching new
skills or concepts, as they provide a structured, guided learning
experience. Tutorials can be highly effective for teaching complex
tasks or concepts, as they break down the learning process into
manageable steps. Furthermore, tutorials can provide immediate
feedback, allowing learners to correct mistakes and reinforce
learning immediately.
07
Drills
Drills are another common type of CAI. Drills provide repetitive
practice of a skill or concept, allowing learners to reinforce
learning and develop automaticity. Drills are often used for
teaching basic skills or concepts, such as arithmetic or language
skills. While drills can be effective for reinforcing learning, they
can also be monotonous and boring. Therefore, it’s important to
balance drills with other types of CAI, such as tutorials or
games, to maintain learner engagement and motivation.
08
Simulations
Simulation Simulation software can provide an
approximation of reality that does not require the
expense of real life or its risks.
09
Instructional Games
Game software often creates a contest
to achieve the highest score and either
beat others or beat the computer.
problem-solving exercises
This approach helps children develop
specific problem solving skills and
strategies.
