Course summary
The course includes reading and listening comprehension exercises at intermediate and
advanced levels, focusing on issues related to international relations, area studies, and
international development. Each lesson is designed with comprehensive sections on
grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, listening, speaking, reading, and writing,
aimed at both providing specialized knowledge and practicing English language skills.
Additionally, students participate in field trips (under the guidance and supervision of the
course instructor) to museums, historical sites, and cultural landmarks within the city of
Da Nang to study and gather information for individual and group assignments.

Students’ responsibility
- Proactively organize and carry out self-study sessions.
- Attend all class sessions, presentations, and field trips for mid-term assignments
(students are allowed to be absent for a maximum of 20% of the class time for the
course).
- Read and practice the mandatory and supplementary reference materials
introduced by the instructor.
- Complete all individual and group assignments both in class and weekly on the
LMS.
- Participate in the final exam (be honest and serious; do not cheat, use
unauthorized materials, or search Google or other tools during the exam).
FIELDTRIP SCHEDULE (TENTATIVE)
1. Time: Week 8 (Sunday)
2. Venue: Da Nang Museum (24 Thach Thang street, Hai Chau Dict., Da Nang)
3. Purpose:
- Create opportunities for students to become familiar with using English outside the
classroom.
- Provide students with specialized knowledge in English related to topics on the
culture and fine arts of the Indochina Peninsula.
- Help students develop teamwork skills, as well as skills in synthesizing, selecting,
and analyzing information to effectively complete essays and group presentations.
4. Requirements:
- Students must gather in front of the museum gate exactly 15 minutes before the
tour starts.
- The minimum duration for the museum visit is 60 minutes.
- Students are responsible for their own transportation and entrance fees.
- The department will contact the museums to inquire about English-speaking
guides.
- Two weeks after the museum visit, students must submit individual essays and
present their group presentations.

Groupwork. Each group consists of 3-4 students. Make a presentation about
ONE of the following topics:
a. Study the current marketing plan of Da Nang Museum. Propose TWO marketing
strategies to assist Da Nang Museum to increase attendance.
b. Should museums turn to crowdfunding instead of getting publicly-funded? What are
the major sources of finance for Da Nang Museum? Give solutions to raise funds for
Da Nang Museum.
c. How can we educate the youths about values of museums? How can schools make
museums closer and friendlier to students? Develop a plan for an educational event
of Da Nang Museum in the University of Foreign Language Studies – The University
of Danang to increase students’ attendance to the museum.
d. Why do wars and conflicts still exist in today society? Describe one war/conflict
displayed at Da Nang Museum that impressed you the most. Give reasons.
e. Should developing countries receive international aids from richer countries to buy
artefacts? Do you think international aids threaten a country’s sovereignty and
independence? Give reasons.
f. Could museums become a cultural tourism motivator? What is the profile of a
cultural tourist? Could cultural tourism become a business opportunity for Da Nang
Museum? Give suggestions.
g. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” (George
Santayana, 1905). Do you agree with this statement? Why/Why not? Why is studying
history important? How can we make history lessons interesting and interactive for
children/students?
