Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Research Theme: Big Data

Research Topic: The impact of the application of Big Data Technologies in operational efficiency
in a range of academic, scientific and economic areas.

“Big data is a term that has become more and more common over the last decade. It was originally
defined as data that is generated in incredibly large volumes, such as internet search queries, data
from weather sensors or information posted on social media. Today big data has also come to
represent large amounts of information generated from multiple sources that cannot be processed in a
conventional way and that cannot be processed by humans without some form of computational
intervention. Big data can be stored in several ways: Structured, whereby the data is organized into
some form of relational format, unstructured, where data is held as raw, un-organized data prior to
turning into a structured form, or semi-structured where the data will have some key definitions or
structural form, but is still held in a format that does not conform to standard data storage models.
Many systems and organizations now generate massive quantities of big data on a daily basis, with
some of this data being made publicly available to other systems for analysis and processing. The
generation of such large amounts of data has necessitated the development of machine learning
systems that can sift through the data to rapidly identify patterns, to answer questions or to solve
problems. As these new systems continue to be developed and refined, a new discipline of data
science analytics has evolved to help design, build and test these new machine learning and artificial
intelligence systems. Utilising Big Data requires a range of knowledge and skills across a broad
spectrum of areas and consequently opens opportunities to organizations that were not previously
accessible. The ability to store and process large quantities of data from multiple sources has meant
that organisations and businesses are able to get a larger overall picture of the pattern of global trends
in the data to allow them to make more accurate and up to date decisions. Such data can be used to
identify potential business risks earlier and to make sure that costs are minimized without
compromising on innovation. However, the rapid application and use of Big Data has raised several
concerns. The storage of such large amounts of data means that security concerns need to be
addressed in case the data is compromised or altered in such a way to make the interpretation
erroneous. In addition, the ethical issues of the storage of personal data from multiple sources have
yet to be addressed, as well as any sustainability concerns in the energy requirements of large data
warehouses and lakes”. (Pearson, 2023)

the effectiveness of using it, and find out the areas that need improvement. It would,
therefore, try to assess how Mobitel implements Big Data to improve operational
efficiencies along three broad functional domains: the technology framework, approach
toward data analytics, and integration of insights within the business operation.
Moreover, it will identify challenges in implementing Big Data solutions, highlight
opportunities for improvement, and suggest viable recommendations to maximize
operational efficiency by enhancing Big Data approaches.

The Parties which use big data analytics can be graphically shown as follows:

Figure 2 MIS of Sri lanka Mobitel Telecom

Aim of this Research

The objective of this study is to find out how Sri Lanka Mobitel Telecom implements
Big Data Technologies, discover opportunities that might help improve operational
efficiency and recommend Pragmatic advice on how to leverage them for enhanced
business performance.

The Objectives of this research project are as follows:

 Analyze the existing data management and analytics processes at Sri Lanka

Risk And Benefits

Risks:
 The international voice and broadband markets are already bringing competition
to the retail market that is challenging the sustainability of revenues in the eroding
margins for retail products. Application of the revised tariffs on the services
already on offer may have negative impacts on the wholesale revenue if the
demand does not increase as expected due to the existence of duplicate backbone
networks in the market. Any negative impact on wholesale revenues will only
serve to further erode the bottom line.
 Data security and privacy concerns may arise when dealing with large volumes of
customer data.
 Big Data technologies can sometimes be expensive and need huge investment in
infrastructure and resources.
 Resistance to change from staff who are not accustomed to using big data
technologies.

Benefits:
 Better decision-making based on insights from big data analysis.
 Improved operational efficiency by automating and optimizing processes.
 Improved customer satisfaction through customized offerings and increased
understanding of customer's needs.
 Cost savings through efficient resource allocation and focused marketing efforts.

1.2.1 Project Plan
A project charter is a document containing the most desired or valuable information
needed to make decisions in a summarized form.
The project charter is required for the project manager to be able to initiate the approved
project and allow him to utilize organizational resources to attain the objectives of the
project.

This consists of budget plan, scope, time, quality, communication, risk and resource
management. First, project vision should be created. Then the roles and responsibilities
of employees should be identified. A resource plan should be created to manage the
resources rightly. Lastly, the risks need to be evaluated. Project charter of this business

Most of the industries have experienced a Big Data revolution in the very recent past,
with rapid growth and adoption of technologies. Among those, Sri Lanka's
telecommunication industry pioneered by Mobitel has been pioneering in applying Big
Data tools to enhance operational effectiveness in various fields ranging from academia
and scientific research to economic development. With these state-of-the-art technologies,
the impact on the different aspects of functions in Mobitel has been immense, redefining
management and use of data, innovation, and informed decision-making for remarkable
progress. This introduction serves to provide background for the different and far-
reaching effects of Big Data technologies on operational efficiency of Mobitel within the
dynamic telecommunications landscape in Sri Lanka, across academic, scientific, and
economic realms.

2.1.1 Define objectives of the Research

on operational efficiency in the telecommunication industry of Sri Lanka, within the
academic, scientific, and economic fields, is marked by the confluence of scholarly
articles, industry reports, and case studies that underline the transformative impacts and
potential for using data-driven methodologies.

Academic Realm
Academic literature points out how Big Data technologies have reshaped research
methodologies. In the 'service' collaborations between firms in the telecom industry, like
Mobitel, with academic institutions, it has been possible to access large datasets used in
comprehensive analysis by researchers. For example, Abeysekera (2016) talks about the
use of telecom data for academic research and how these partnerships drive scientific
inquiries and innovation.

Scientific Progression
In the realms of telecommunications, numerous publications depict Big Data's influence
on scientific research. For example, scholarly research such as that by Harshani and
Priyashantha in 2019 exemplifies how the analysis of large datasets from telecom
networks has contributed much toward network optimization and predictive maintenance
by harnessing Big Data's role in facilitating scientific innovations for technological
development.

operational processes. Most of this research will use real-life use cases and performance
metrics to prove the measurable impact of Big Data on efficiency.

2.2 Prepare Data Collection Process

2.2.1 Defining the Methodologies

Qualitative and quantitative Research Methods

Qualitative research can be defined as the method of market research that emphasizes
obtaining data through open-ended and conversational communication. In this method, it
concerns 'why' people think so but not about 'what' people think. Here, it mainly concerns
observations, not about numerical values. In this method, data are collected by using
observations, focus groups, in-depth- interviews, etc. (Bhat, n.d.)

1. Observation – This here involves the company seeing how many times a
transaction related to one good is carried out, peoples' behavior etc. observation
can be simple or behavioral.
2. Focus groups–This is a small group that comprises 6-10 respondents from the
target market. The principal objective is to seek the solutions to the issues
identified.
3. In-depth- interviews- This interview is conducted face to face. So that the
researcher can get the exact information from the customers.

Some of the benefits of this method include in-depth understanding about the attitudes
and behaviors of the people can be gained, provide useful content for practical
applications, more affordable than other research methods, mainly focus on decisions,
use smaller sample space than other research methods, etc.
Some of the disadvantages include that data can't be proved since there is no document
to prove it; data has less reliability and validity, no numerical or statistical operations
can be done, high time concern to collect data, etc. (Bhat, n.d.)
At the same time, the qualitative research method becomes very important while
collecting and analyzing problems elaborated above.

It is a systematic investigation of phenomena by gathering quantifiable data and

performing statistical, mathematical, or computational techniques. That means in this
type of research, numbers are involved when doing the research. If numbers are not
involved in doing it, then it's not a quantitative research method. These are descriptive,
measurable, and experimental data. Quantitative research methods gather information
from many sources, including but not limited to surveys, interviews, records among
others. (Anon., 2019)
1. Surveys: These can be conducted online. You just must email question forms to
the target groups, or you give them question papers offline. And the questions
will be designed in such a way that it will help the researcher respond to their
research questions by gathering data.
2. Interviews: This is an oral communication between the researcher and the
participant. Through this much information is gathered and it may be through the
phone or one to one.
3. Records: This provides essential information for research questions. Because
these are related to numbers, these things can be proved, and they are accurate.
Records are numbers and statistics used in different activities.
All the qualitative research methodologies have a series of steps that need to be followed.
These include identification of the problem, preparation of questions regarding an
identified problem, and examination of existing information about the problem under
survey or investigation. Work done such preparing questions, replying to the results
received etc. and developing a research plan. For example, in this company there are
fewer sales of items per day - that is the research problem. To find out the reason for that,
questions should be prepared. Some of those questions are less security, high prices and
low quality of products. Then the company must check whether those problems have been
repeated twice or someone has answered the questions the company has to reply to it.
Research plan includes whom these data are going to collect and how these data are going
to collect. According to this example, reviews can be collected from employees,
university students, unemployed people, old citizens, etc. (Bhat, n.d.)

The problems of the company can be analyzed quite a distance by using quantitative
research methods. The advantages of this method include getting a relatively conclusive
answer to the research questions, the output of the research is trustworthy, results can be
generalized to an entire target group, data collected is reliable, data can be collected fast,
scope of the data analysis is wide, etc.
Yet, the point to be considered here is that this approach has one main drawback that they
do not listen to peoples' thoughts and opinions.
Thus, the quantitative research method is one of the best methods for identifying the
problem and analyzing the problem.

The above-mentioned two techniques are important in different ways. The difference
between qualitative and quantitative research methods can be shown below.

Qualitative Research Quantitative Research

Focus Observations Calculations
From data Produced Descriptive data Numerical data
Type of Questions asked Open end Questions Close end Questions
Data collection instruments In depth interviews, Surveys, interviews,
observations, focus group records
Approach Subjective Objective
Quantitative Surveys: This approach entails large-scale surveys among Mobitel
employees, academic researchers, and key stakeholders engaged in scientific and
economic fields. The main purpose is to elicit quantitative data pertaining to their
perceptions, personal experiences, and perceived impacts resulting from the incorporation
of Big Data technologies.

Qualitative Interviews- This involves a deep and extensive interview with a few chosen
individuals from the industry expertise, academic research backgrounds, and various
stakeholders. The essence is to retrieve detailed qualitative information, personal
experiences, and comprehensive opinions relating specifically to the impact of
Big Data in the respective field of professional discipline.

2.2.2 Planning the instrument/Tools

Quantitative survey: The quantitative survey processes will be conducted based on

conducting research on the internet through tools such as Google Forms and
SurveyMonkey. Structured questionnaires will be designed very carefully to identify
perception, particular impacts, challenges, and benefits accruing from the integration of
Big Data technologies into academia, scientific research, and economic fields.

Qualitative Interview Guide: An elaborate interview guide with open-ended questions

shall be developed. This would help the researcher in eliciting responses on the
qualitative dimensions of Big Data impacts. The exploration will dwell on experiences,
successful stories, challenges faced by the individuals, and what potential areas they see
for Improvement across academia, scientific research, and the spheres of economic life.
2.2.3 Data Analysis Tools
Data Analysis Software - Quantitative data emanating from the survey responses will be
analyzed using SPSS, R, or Excel. From here, these platforms will enable the exploration
of data to derive descriptive statistics, correlations, and the performance of inferential
analyses.

Qualitative data analysis software: NVivo or MAXQDA will be used in analyzing

qualitative data extracted during the interviews. These are some of the qualitative analysis
tools, offering a systematic way of studying interview transcripts by identifying patterns,
themes repeated, and ideas. This systematic model is helpful in reaping meaningful and
insightful information from the qualitative data extracted.

2.2.5 Finalize the data collection process
The data collection process involves the following steps.

 Review and Validation: The survey and interview guides are to be reviewed and
validated through making a few trial runs or getting feedback from a small
number of participants on how effective these instruments are.

 Recruitment and Data Collection: The process will begin through active
recruitment and data collection from the Mobitel employees, stakeholders, and
customers in terms of distributing the surveys while interviewing other sets of
experts or stakeholders to avail diversified insight.

 Data Handling and Analysis: The data is handled in a systematic way such that it
compiles and structures the information. The analysis of the responses of the
surveys uses quantitative tools, while the qualitative data is thematically analyzed.

 Documentation and Reporting: This includes describing the methodology, data

sources, and analysis methods. A well-rounded report has been prepared that
