Worksheet- I (Applied Mathematics –I)

1. Write the value of p for which 𝑎 = 3𝑖 + 2j + 9𝑘 and 𝑏 = 𝑖 + 𝑝j + 3𝑘 are parallel


vectors.
2. Find the value of λ such that a and b are perpendicular to each other 𝑎 = 𝑖 − 3j + 3𝑘 and
𝑏 = 3𝑖 + 9j − 12𝑘.
3. Let 𝑢 + 2𝑣 = 3j – 𝑘 and 3𝑢 – 𝑣 = 𝑖 + j + 𝑘 . Find 𝑢 and 𝑣 .
4. If the vector → with the same direction as 4𝑖 − 3j and magnitude 10 has initial point (1,2),
then find B.
5. If 𝑎 = 𝑖 + j − 𝑘 , 𝑏 = 𝑖 − j + 𝑘 ,𝑐 = −𝑖 + j + 𝑘 find a unit vector in the direction of
𝑎 + 𝑏 + 𝑐.
6. Find a vector whose magnitude is 5 unit , perpendicular to each of vectors ( 𝑎 + 𝑏) and (𝑎 − 𝑏)
where vector 𝑎 = 𝑖 + j + 𝑘 and 𝑏 = 𝑖 + 2j + 3𝑘 .
7. If the sum two unit vectors is a unit vector, show that the magnitude of their difference is √3.
8. Let 𝑢 and 𝑣 be vectors such that ‖𝑢‖ = 4 and ‖2𝑢 − 𝑣‖ = ‖𝑢 + 𝑣‖.Then find 𝑢. 𝑣.
9. If 𝑣 = 4𝑖 − 3j and u is a unit vector ‖𝑢 + 𝑣‖2 = 27, then find the cosine of angle between u
and v .
10. Determine the value k so that the vector 𝑢 = (𝑘, 2𝑘, 2𝑘, 4) and 𝑣 = (4,2𝑘, 2𝑘, 𝑘) are

27. Find equation of the line that passes through the point
a) (4, −5,20) and perpendicular to the plane 𝑥 + 3𝑦 − 6𝑧 − 8 = 0
b) (2,0, −4) and parallel to each of the planes 2𝑥 + 𝑦 – 𝑧 = 0
28. Find an equation of the plane satisfying the given conditions. The plane
a) is perpendicular to the line through the points (2,2, −4) and (7, −1,3) and containing the
point (−5,1,2) .
b) is parallel to the plane 4𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 𝑧 − 1 = 0 and containing the point (2,6, −1)
