1. On George’s 13th birthday, his brother John is 8 years old. How old will John be on George’s 18 th
birthday?
(a) 13
(b) 14
(c) 15
(d)16
Solution:
George’s 18th birthday is 5 years after his 13th birthday. Thus John will be 8 + 5 = 13 years old.
2. 7 – 8 + (4 ? 6) ÷ 2 = 4. To make the statement true, the question mark between 4 and 6 should be
replaced by?
(a) +
(b) –
(c) ÷
(d) ×
Solution:
7 – 8 + (4 + 6) ÷ 2 = 4. Thus “?” should be replaced with “+”
3. A square and triangle has the same perimeter. The sides of the triangle are 9.3 cm, 8.5 cm, and
10.2 cm respectively. What is the area of the square?
(a) 36
(b) 49
(c) 55
(d) 64
Solution:
9.3 + 8.5 + 10.2 = 28
Then the side of the square is 28 ÷ 4 = 7. Thus 7 × 7 = 49
4. Seven trees are equally spaced along one side of a road. If the 2 nd and 5th tree have a total distance
of 6m. What is the total distance between 1st and last tree?
(a) 10 m
(b) 12 m
(c) 13 m
(d) 14 m
Solution:
The 2nd to 5th tree has 3 spaces in between.
Hence, 6 ÷ 3 = 2m is the distance between two trees
From 1st to 7th tree there are 6 spaces in between. Thus 6 × 2m = 12m
5. At Bosville High School, 45% of the students are in Science Club and 55% are in Math Club. If there
are 54 students in Science Club, how many students are there in Bosville High School?
(a) 100
(b) 110
(c) 120
(d) 130
Solution:
54 ÷ 45% = 120 students
6. What is the area of the given figure?
8 cm
(a) 38 cm 8 cm
(b) 65 cm 5 cm
(c) 89 cm
(d) 104 cm
13 cm
Solution:
The figure is composed of 2 squares: 5×5 and 8×8. Thus 25 + 64 = 89
7. A dime is worth 2 nickels while a quarter is worth 5 nickels. How many quarters are there in 10
dimes?
(a) 1
(b) 2
(c) 3
(d) 4
Solution:
10 dimes is equal to 10 × 2 = 20 nickels. Thus, it is equal to 20 ÷ 5 = 4 quarters.
8. If the LCM of 10 and 15 is 30, what is its GCF?
(a) 2
(b) 3
(c) 4
(d) 5
Solution:
The Greatest Common Factor (GCF) of 10 and 15 is 5
9. Nathan was stacking plastic cups. As shown below, he can create 3 levels with 6 plastic cups. How
many levels can he make with 15 plastic cups?
(a) 4
(b) 5
(c) 6
(d) 7
Solution:
N (N+1) / 2 = 15. Thus N = 5
10. Leslie asked her neighbors what kind of pets they own. She made a bar graph out of it. How many
people own a pet cat more than those who own a pet hamster?
(a) 3
(b) 4
(c) 6
(d) 8
Solution:
11 people own a cat, while 5 people own a hamster. Thus 11 – 5 = 6
Part 2: 11th to 25th Open-ended questions
11. A cylindrical container is half-filled with water. If the height of the water is 10cm, and the
22
diameter of the container is 14 cm. Find the volume of the container. (Use 𝜋 = 7 )
14 cm
10 cm
Solution:
Use 𝜋= 22/7
Volume of water is 𝜋(7)2(10) =1540 cm.
Since it’s half the container, the total volume of container is 1540 × 2 = 3080
12. A right angled triangle has lengths 5 cm and 12 cm for its shorter sides. What is its hypotenuse?
Solution:
Using Pythagorean theorem: 𝑎2 + 𝑏2 = 𝑐 2 , where a = 5 cm and b = 12 cm.
Thus we get c = 13 cm.
13. Determine the value of 75 × 34 + 33 × 150.
Solution:
75 × 34 + 33 × 150
= 75 (1 × 34 + 33 × 2)
= 75 (34 + 66)
= 75 (100)
= 7500
14. Students want to buy a present for their teacher and they decided to give the same amount of
money. If they give Php3.00 each, the total money will lack Php4.00. If they give Php4.00 each, the
total money will have an excess of Php9.00. How many students are there?
Solution:
Let N be the number of students
3N + 4 = 4N – 9
N = 13
15. Andy’s height is 9/8 of Rex’s height and 20/17 of Olive’s height. If Rex’s height is 160cm, find
Olive’s height.
Solution:
Andy’s height is 160 × (9/8) = 180
cm
Thus, Olive’s height is 180 ÷
(20/17) = 153 cm
16. Jonathan was riding his bicycle to the market at a speed of 4 m/s. If it takes him 30 minutes going
to the market, how far is the market?
Solution:
4 × (30 × 60) = 7200 m
17. Beatrice bought a batch of rubber bands at a near local store. On the first day she bought half of
the rubber bands. Then on the 2nd day, she bought half of the remaining rubber bands. She then
asked the store manager how many were left, and the store manager answered 12. How many
rubber bands did the store initially have?
Solution:
Working backwards, 12 × 2 = 24 rubber bands on the 2 nd day.
Then 24 × 2 = 48 rubber bands on the first day.
18. Refer to the figure below. How many squares are there?
Solution:
(3 × 4) + (2 × 3) + (1 × 2) = 20
19. Determine the area of the given figure below in cm 2.
7 cm
5 cm
9 cm
Solution:
Area of trapezoid is (b1 + b2) × h/2
Thus (9 + 7) × 5 / 2 = 40 cm
20. Find the value of 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + … + 52 + 54.
Solution:
27 ×(54+2)/2 = 756
21. How many 3-digit numbers are there that are divisible by 3 but cannot be divisible by 4?
Solution:
Getting 3-digit numbers that divisible by 3, we have
[(999 – 102) ÷ 3] + 1 = 300
Then getting 3-digit numbers divisible by both 3 and 4, we have
[(996 – 108) ÷ 12] + 1 = 75
Since it’s only divisible by 3 and not by 4,
300 – 75 = 225
22. A coin has 2 sides, heads and tails. If it is flipped in the air twice, what is its probability to land in
tails consecutively?
Solution:
The probability to land in tails is ½. Thus to land in tails consecutively, ½ × ½ = 1/4
23. A die has a total of 6 faces. As shown, five faces are visible with a total of 18 dots. How many dots
are not visible?
Solution:
A die has 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 = 21 dots. Since there are 2 dice, 21 × 2 = 42 dots
Thus, 42 – 18 = 24 dots are not visible.
24. Donna went to a rural place and counted the vehicles she saw. She made a pie graph out of it. If she
saw a total of 2 trains, how many cars are there?
Solution:
2 ÷ 10% = 20 vehicles
Thus 20 × 40% = 8 cars
25. Given the digits 1, 3, 5, and 7. If you use these without repetition to form 3-digit numbers, how
many 3-digit numbers can you make?
Solution:
4 × 3 × 2 = 24
