ME101 Lecture04 KD

The document discusses the concepts of equivalent force and couple systems in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional spaces, including the resultant of force systems and the application of wrench actions. It provides examples of calculating resultant forces and couples, as well as the conditions for rigid body equilibrium, emphasizing the importance of free-body diagrams and support reactions. The principles of transmissibility and the conditions for equilibrium are also highlighted, focusing on the balance of forces and moments acting on a rigid body.

Rigid Body Equilibrium
Equilibrium
Equilibrium of a body is a condition in which the
resultants of all forces acting on the body is zero.

Condition studied in Statics
When the resultant of all forces on a body is not
zero, acceleration of the body is obtained by
equating the force resultant to the product of the
mass and acceleration of the body.

Condition studied in Dynamics

equal to zero, and
• Sum of the moments of the external forces about a
point is equal to zero
