CHAPTER I
THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
The Matatag Curriculum is an innovative educational framework designed to
foster resilience and well-being in students. Developed by educators and experts
in the field, this curriculum aims to equip learners with essential life skills, values,
and knowledge to navigate complex challenges and thrive in an ever-changing
world. Matatag, a Filipino term meaning "resilient" or "strong," reflects the
program's core objective.
By integrating socio-emotional learning, character education, and mental health
awareness, the Matatag Curriculum provides a holistic approach to student
development. It focuses on building strengths such as self-awareness, empathy,
problem-solving, and positive relationships, enabling students to cope with
adversity, achieve academic success, and lead fulfilling lives.
Through engaging lessons, interactive activities, and real-world applications,
students develop resilience, critical thinking, and creativity. Teachers and
educators also receive support and training to create a nurturing environment
that promotes student growth and well-being. By adopting the Matatag
Curriculum, educational institutions can empower their students to become
confident, compassionate, and resilient individuals, equipped to make a positive
impact in their communities and beyond.
Changing the curriculum is important because it ensures that students are
prepared for the ever-changing world. As technology and society continue to
evolve, education must adapt to provide students with the necessary skills and
knowledge to succeed in their future careers. It can address new challenges,
such as the rise of digital tools and global issues like climate change, while
promoting critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. This way, education
remains relevant and helps students become well-rounded individuals ready for
the demands of the modern world. In order to ensure that students are prepared
for the modern world, curriculum must constantly adapt to new technologies,
societal values, economic demands, and emerging research. In other words, a
static curriculum would not adequately prepare students for the future. New
needs and issues in society lead to modifications in curriculum. These
modifications could be brought about by the culture or by reviews or evaluations
of the curriculum. Along with access to technology and innovative curriculum,
curriculum can also shift in reaction to political, social, and economic challenges.
The Philippine education system is undergoing a transformative shift aimed at
aligning its basic education standards with global benchmarks. This shift focuses
on meticulous curriculum development to ensure its appropriateness,
responsiveness, and relevance to learners both nationally and globally
(Department of Education, (2019); Department of Education, (2023). A significant
part of this reform is the introduction of the MATATAG curriculum, as detailed in
the General Shaping Paper published by the Department of Education (2023).
One of the notable changes in the MATATAG curriculum is the reduction in the
number of competencies, addressing the issue of curriculum overcrowding. This
reduction allows for a more focused and effective teaching and learning
experience, where educators can dedicate more time to essential skills and
knowledge. The streamlined competencies aim to enhance the overall quality of
education by providing a clearer and more manageable structure for both
teachers and students (Garcia, 2020, Olipas, 2024).
The researcher observed that grade 7 students is having a difficulties of
having the Matatag Curriculum because they encounter a number of difficulties.
One significant problem is the hasty adoption, which leaves students feeling
overburdened and teachers unprepared. Although helpful, the curriculum's
emphasis on fundamental abilities might come across as constrictive and
confining, particularly for pupils used to a more diverse range of courses. Their
general well-being and academic performance may be impacted by the stress
and anxiety that the higher workload and quicker learning speed might cause.
Additionally, these difficulties may be made worse by inadequate resources and
support networks, which may hinder students' ability to completely adjust to the
new curriculum.
Thus, the researcher’s wanted to employ this study to determine the Level of
Perception of Grade 7 students to the Implementation of Matatag Curriculum at
Balete National High School. This research also help them to know what a
students needs to improve . This research will employ survey questionnaires to
gather data from the Grade 7 students. The results will be presented in a clear
and comprehensive manner.
