1. Introduction

The rise in global competition has prompted organizations to devise strategies to have a talented and innovative
workforce to gain a competitive edge. Developing an internship programme is an impactful strategy for creating a future
talent pool for the industry. The Internship programme not only helps fresh pass-outs in gaining professional know-how
but also benefits, corporate on fresh perspectives on business issues and even discovering future business leaders.

Summer internships are a great way for students to gain valuable work experience and get a foot in the door of their
desired industry. However, it’s important to remember that an internship is not just a summer job. It’s an opportunity to
learn, grow, and potentially secure a Pre-Placement Offer (PPO) for a full-time position after graduation. Here are some
do’s and don’ts to help you make the most of your summer internship:

What is Summer Internship Programme (SIP)?

SIP is a distinctive opportunity provided to the Student Intern to get exposed to corporate culture, professional
experience, and putting theoretical concepts learnt in the classroom for developing managerial skills along with other
skills. Every year lot many companies recruit a number of Summer Interns in different divisions to work with them on
live business projects in a variety of functions

2. Objectives of Internship

Internships are educational and career development opportunities, providing practical experience in a field or discipline.
They are structured, short-term, supervised placements often focused around particular tasks or projects with defined
timescales. An internship may be compensated, non-compensated or some time may be paid. The internship has to be
meaningful and mutually beneficial to the intern and the organization. It is important that the objectives and the
activities of the internship program are clearly defined and understood.

Following are the intended objectives of internship training:

1. Will expose Management students to the industrial environment, which cannot be simulated in the Classroom
and hence creating competent professionals for the industry.

2. Provide possible opportunities to learn, understand and sharpen the real time managerial skills required at the
job

3. Exposure to the current managerial developments relevant to the subject area of training.

4. Experience gained from the ‘Industrial Internship’ in classroom will be used in classroom discussions.

5. Create conditions conducive to quest for knowledge and its applicability on the job. Learn to apply Management
knowledge in real industrial situations.

6. Gain experience in writing Management reports/projects.

7. Expose students to the manager’s responsibilities and ethics.

8. Familiarize with various materials, processes, products and their applications along with relevant aspects of
Quality control.

9. Promote academic, professional and/or personal development.

10. Expose the students to future managers/ entrepreneurs.

1
11. Understand the social, economic and administrative considerations that influence the working environment of
industrial organizations

12. Understand the psychology of the workers and their habits, attitudes and approach to problem solving.
3. SIP Focus
To achieve the above objectives, the SIP focuses on:
 On the job Management Training which involves team work, goal orientation, and managing
interpersonal relationships.
 The project work which helps the Student Intern to learn to undertake structured assignments with timeline
in a full time organisational setting.
4. Stages of SIP
SIP can be broadly classified into three phases:
 Orientation in the company
 Management Training
 Project/research work

Orientation in the Company:

 During first week of SIP
 To make student familiar with the company.

Management Training:
 From beginning till end, it continues
 Internship Training gives direct exposure to execution
and support functions of the department.

SIP Project:
 It is submitted at the end of SIP
 It includes research design, designing of
questionnaires, sampling techniques, tabulation of
data, application of statistical tools for analysis of data

5. Benefits to Students:
a) An opportunity to get hired by the Industry/ organization/ Pre-placement offer (PPO) based on student’s
performance.
b) Practical experience in an organizational setting.
c) Excellent opportunity to see how the theoretical aspects learned in classes are integrated into the practical world.
On-floor experience provides much more professional experience which is often worth more than Classroom
teaching.
d) Opportunity to learn new skills and supplement knowledge.
e) Opportunity to practice communication and teamwork skills.
f) Opportunity to learn strategies like time management, multi-tasking etc in an industrial setup.
g) Opportunity to meet new people and learn networking skills.
h) Makes a valuable addition to their resume.
i) Enhances their candidacy for higher education.
j) Creating a network and social circle and developing relationships with industry people.

6. Conduct and Behaviour:

The Student Interns must remember that they are the representatives of their reputed institutions and carry themselves in
the manner suitable to their values. EIILM -K expects that the student intern should keep up the standards of his/ her
place of work. It is predominantly vital to be regular, punctual, obedient, honest and sincere at work. Unprofessional
behaviour, dishonesty, misconduct, indiscipline, irregularity at work and unsatisfactory performance will tarnish the
image of the institute in the corporate world and also it affects placement in near future and secondly leads to the
cancellation of internship of the student.
In order to avoid these adverse situations, we would like to suggest some Do’s and Don’ts during SIP.

6.1 Do's
Student Intern should
Be proactive - Take initiative and ask for projects or tasks to work on. Don’t wait for your supervisor to assign you
something. Show that you are eager to learn and contribute to the team.
 Be punctual - Arrive on time and be respectful of your supervisor’s time. If you are going to be late or absent,
communicate this as soon as possible.
 Dress appropriately - Dress according to the company’s dress code. If in doubt, it’s better to be overdressed
than underdressed.
 Network - Take advantage of the opportunity to meet people in your industry. Attend company events,
introduce yourself to colleagues, and ask for informational interviews.

3
 Ask questions - Don’t be afraid to ask questions if you don’t understand something. This shows that you are
engaged and interested in learning.
 Take feedback positively - Listen to feedback and take it as an opportunity to improve. Don’t take it
personally, but use it to grow and develop your skills.
 Be open-minded - Be open to new experiences and challenges. This is a chance to learn about different aspects
of the industry and gain new skills.
 Confidentiality: maintain strict confidentiality of the company information.
6.2 Don'ts
 Don’t be late - Being late shows a lack of respect for your supervisor’s time and can leave a negative
impression.
 Don’t be on your phone - Stay off your phone during work hours. It’s distracting and can make you look
unprofessional.
 Don’t gossip - Avoid gossiping or talking negatively about colleagues. It can create a toxic work environment
and damage your reputation.
 Don’t be shy - Don’t be afraid to speak up and share your ideas. Your perspective as a student can be valuable
to the team.
 Don’t be complacent - Don’t just do the bare minimum. Show that you are willing to go above and beyond to
contribute to the team.
 Don’t be afraid to ask for help - If you are struggling with a task, don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s better to
ask for assistance than to make a mistake that could have been avoided.
 Don’t criticize the company policies and /or company executives.
 Don’t criticize or make adverse comments about institute and/or faculty.
 Don’t enter into arguments and loose temper.
 Don’t leave the office without prior permission.
 Don’t borrow money or any other personal things of the company executives.
 Don’t go to meetings and presentations ill equipped or ill-prepared.
7. Skills Acquisition Though SIP
 Adaptability: Change according to the times makes the students cope with situational and work-related
stresses and pressures.
 Impression management: In SIP interns have to come across different individuals that may include
company guide, faculty guide, executives, respondents and also a lot many. Therefore, student wishes to go

they are new in market. Thus, they can acquire leadership skills through this.
 Networking: SIP enables a student to establish network. This is a great opportunity to get in contact with
that many executives and also respondents.
