COURSE NAME: STUDIES IN POLITICS AND SOCIO-ECONOMICS OF UGANDA

Course Description & Objectives:
In this course, we shall use a thematic approach i.e. not covering all topics but be selective. The
course begins with assessing politics of Uganda on the eve of Independence. It depicts how
independence politics was fragmented along ethnic and religious line. We shall then assess how
the legacy of colonialism shaped the politics at independence. Look at the actors and factors that
led to political crisis of 1966, 67 and 71. The course will also cover shifting economic policies in
Uganda and their consequences. Furthermore the course will cover political challenges of post-
colonial Uganda such as constitutional instability, ethnicity, human rights crisis, electoral crisis
and finally foreign policy.

Course objectives

a) To promote skills of critical thinking among the learners


b) To enable students acquire skills of research and learning how to learn (learners must learn
how to search for relevant literature on their own)
c) To enable students understand and appreciate important challenges of Independent Uganda
from a historical perspective
d) At the end of the course students should have imbibed values of nationalism, democracy,
pluralism and co-operative living
