HBF 2301: BUSINESS STRATEGY

Prerequisite – None

Course Purpose
Build Learners’ capacity to integrate technical and business knowledge to help one
succeed as a strategic manager in a dynamic global business environment.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, the learner should be able to:-
1. Develop analytical skills and acquire decision making tools for dealing with
complex management problems at various levels in an organization.
2. Describe the relationship between different strategies, the organization structure
in a dynamic world.
3. Develop a framework of analysis that enables them to identify the central issues
and problems in complex, comprehensive cases, and to suggest alternative
courses of action
4. Develop business strategy for a firm
Course description
Understanding Strategic Management concepts and applications, The Strategic
Management Process, Mission and vision statement, Environmental scanning: SWOT
analysis, Resource based view of the firm, Competitive Analysis, Porters five forces
model; Identification of core competences and critical success factors; Growth
strategies, competitive strategies & functional strategies; Strategic Analysis and choice;
Strategy implementation (organization structure, employee empowerment, reward
systems, culture, leadership); Strategic control and continuous improvement, Case
study techniques.

Class lecturers, Assignments and exercises, Group discussions

Continuous Assessment (CATs 15%, Assignment 5%, Presentation 10%) 30%
