FIELD STUDY 1 LEARNING EPISODE

THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT

FS 1 1
SPARK your interest
This episode 1 provides an opportunity for students to examine and reflect on
a school environment that promotes learning and development.

TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcomes

 At the end of this episode, I must be able to determine the characteristics of
a school environment that is safe, secure, and is supportive of learning (PPST
2.1.1).
REVISIT the Learning Essentials
1. A physical environment conducive for learning is one that has consistent
practices that:
 Keep the school safe, clean, orderly free from distraction;
 Maintain facilities that provide challenging activities; and
 Address the physical, social and psychological needs of the students.
2. Display boards can be powerful in communicating information about the learning
environment. They help in building and establishing the school cultures. These
boards become one way for everyone to learn about the vision-mission, goals, and
values that the school upholds.
3. As a basic part of the school’s visual environment, display boards have four
general purposes:
 Decorative-they offer visual stimulation and appeal to aesthetics. They set
the social and psychological atmosphere of the school.
 Motivational-they encourage students to perform better and have greater
confidence. An example would be the display of students’ outputs that show
that each output is recognized and valued. The bulletin boards helps
celebrate the learners’ growth and progress.
 Informational-they are used as a strategy to readily disseminate information.
 Instructional-they move students to response and participate through
interactive displays. They get students to think about communicate their
learning.
4. The set of criteria for evaluating bulletin board displays includes effective
communication, attractiveness, balance, unity, interactivity, legibility, correctness
and durability.

1. Look at the walls of the classroom. What are posted on the walls? What heroes,
religious figures, lessons, visual aids, announcements, do you see posted?

There are lots of posters that has been posted inside the classroom. The bulletin
board is very colorful and consists of Announcements (but there were no
announcements posted), list of names of the Class Officers (no picture), Cleaners of the
Day, theme of the month (Buwan ng Wika) and received certificates of the Grade -4
Germanium. There was no display of outputs, and visual aids posted in the bulletin

that, English Alphabet is also posted at the top part of the whiteboard and a poster for
Daily Calendar (days, month, year and weather) and a signage for always maintaining
the cleanliness of the classroom (in English and Maranao language) at the top part of
the blackboard. The class schedule was also posted at the front door and there is a 3
“Excuse” card placed on the wall near the door.

2. Examine how the pieces of furniture are arranged. Where is the teachers’ table
located? How are the tables and chairs/desks arranged?

There is a chair and a front desk wide enough for the subject teacher close to the
blackboard and 1 meter away from the students’ chairs in front. There is also a table at
the back that is designed for the classroom adviser. Beside the table is a cabinet for the

FIELD STUDY 1 9
teachers all their things such as IM’s and students’ projects as well a water dispenser for
the students to drink. Aside from that, there is also another storage divider where the
teacher can put her books and other educational materials and a mirror on the left side
of it. The students’ chairs are in good condition (plastic chair) and is well-arranged in
four rows.

3. What learning materials/equipment are present?

The teachers primarily rely on traditional teaching methods, using chalk/marker and a
blackboard/whiteboard for instruction. Manila paper is occasionally used as a visual aid,
but I only observed one teacher who was using it. There is also one teacher (class
adviser) who’s a lapel during her discussion especially it was raining at that time.
Overall, there's a lack of integration of technology in the teaching process

4. Observe the students. How many are occupying one room?

There are 43 students occupying the room with 25 girls and 18 boys. Considering that
the room is not big but not too small, I think that it is very crowded for the number of
students because I believe that the ideal number of students should range to 30-35
students for them to be accommodated by the students. I also noticed that their seating
arrangements is an alternate of 2 boys and 2 girls and they also were a slipper inside
the room.
5. Is the room well-lit and well-ventilated?
The room is well-lit as the natural light of the wide windows adds up to the brightness of
the room at the same time there are 2 light bulbs. The room is also well-ventilated
thanks to the 3 electric fans and open windows. However, one of the disadvantages of
the left side open windows is that it is very distracting since students and parents are
roaming around the hallways and on the right side windows which is near the highway
roads, it is also very distracting because it is kind of noisy due to different vehicles
passing by.

ANALYZE

How do the school campus and the classroom in particular impact the learning of the students going to
school? What are your conclusions?

A conducive school environment, including well-maintained classrooms and campus facilities, can
significantly motivate students to attend school and engage in their learning. When students recognize the
school as a welcoming and safe place, they are more likely to trust and focus on their learning. Aside from
that, the availability of resources like learning materials, laboratories, and other facilities can enhance
student engagement by providing them the opportunities to use what they have learn inside the classroom
through hands-on experiences such as during science laboratory activities (learning how to use a
microscope) or during their hand-on experience in computer laboratories where they able to learn the
different technological skills.

Beyond physical factors, the different stakeholders within the school campus, especially the
teachers also play a crucial role in student motivation. That is, if teachers exhibit caring, fairness, respect,
and enthusiasm toward the students, it can create a positive and supportive learning atmosphere that
encourages students to be determined to attend school and not afraid to actively participate in their
classroom activities. Overall, a safe, well-equipped, and supportive school environment, combined with
positive teacher interactions, can significantly influence student motivation and overall academic
achievement.

How does this relate to your knowledge of child and adolescent development/How does this relate to your
to your knowledge of facilitating learning?
Teachers play a crucial role in facilitating student learning. That is, a teacher must be aware of the
diverse needs of their students, including their ages, learning styles, intelligence, cultural backgrounds,
abilities, interests, and behaviors. Thus, a teacher must be flexible and creative to accommodate these
individual differences and create an inclusive classroom environment and engaging space for all learners.

FIELD STUDY 1 12
Moreover, teachers should prioritize student engagement and employ a variety of teaching
strategies. They should also create a sense of respect and acceptance for all student’s whatever
background they come from and avoid some biases and discrimination. Beyond the classroom, teachers
should also collaborate with school administrators to improve the overall school environment and promote
positive social interactions among students, teachers, parents, and the school community. This includes
creating opportunities for students to interact with each other and fostering a sense of belonging and
support.

REFLECT

1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed? Why? Why not?
Yes, I would be interested in teaching in the school environment I observed. The school seems to
have a positive and supportive atmosphere, with almost complete and well-maintained facilities and
they focus on student engagement. I also observed that the teachers appear to be dedicated and
caring, creating a welcoming environment for students. However, one thing that I observed was that
most of the teachers are using the traditional approach and focus more on teacher-centered
approaches. They are more on letting the students copy the lessons and afterward discuss it without
using any alternative approaches to teach their lessons. Also, during my observation, I haven’t
observed any performance-based activities which are very crucial in student’s understanding
especially applying their knowledge to real-life situations .

2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?

A conducive school campus is one that fosters a positive and supportive learning environment. It
should be safe, accessible, and well-maintained, with clean and comfortable facilities. The campus
should also be equipped with necessary resources like libraries, laboratories, playgrounds, a school
clinic and a guidance office which are present in the school that I observed. Additionally, a conducive
school campus should have a positive and inclusive school culture that promotes respect,
collaboration, and engagement with all the teachers, students, school administration, and other
stakeholders.

3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?

A conducive classroom is a well-organized and comfortable space that promotes students’ learning.
It should be safe, clean, and well-maintained, with adequate lighting and ventilation. The classroom
should also be equipped with necessary resources like a bulletin board that consists of
announcements, and a display of students’ output. The classroom must also be spacious enough to
accommodate the appropriate number of students. Most of all students and teachers enjoy a friendly
atmosphere of friendship and where students may express themselves freely without fear of being
judged or discriminated against.

4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?

To create a conducive classroom as described above, I, as the teacher, must develop effective
classroom management skills. If I were to be assigned to an ideal classroom, I would strive to preserve
its positive atmosphere by implementing clear rules and classroom management and be a role model
to my students in demonstrating cleanliness and orderliness. I would also be flexible, resourceful, and
creative enough to implement personalized learning approaches and incorporate mindful activities to
accommodate all the students’ different learning styles and intelligence. Most of all, I would foster a
collaborative and communicative classroom culture where students feel comfortable sharing ideas,
asking questions, and working together.

to a conducive learning environment. One of these is the importance of having a conducive school
campus and classroom which can significantly impact student motivation and engagement. Aside
from that, teachers play a vital role in creating a positive and supportive learning environment. Thus,
a teacher must demonstrate good attitudes, behaviors, and teaching strategies because they can
significantly influence what the students learn and development. Moreover, collaboration among
teachers, students, parents, and school administrators is essential for creating a conducive learning
environment. By working together, stakeholders can identify and address challenges and implement
effective strategies to improve their learning experience. Lastly, creating a conducive learning
environment is an ongoing process. That is why schools should regularly assess their environment and
make necessary adjustments to ensure that it meets the needs of students and supports their
learning and development.

The display board, or what we more commonly refer to as bulletin board, is one of the most readily
available and versatile learning resources.

To achieve the Intended Learning Outcome, work your way through these steps: 1. Ballways and
classrooms. 2. Pick one and evaluate the display. 3. Propose enhancements to make the display more
effective.

As you look around and examine board displays, use the observation guide and forms provided for
you to document your observations.

An Observation Guide for BOARD DISPLAYS

Read the following carefully before you observe.

1. Go around the school and examine the board displays. How many board displays do you see?
There are two (2) bulletin boards that are posted outside the management office and near the
waiting area. There are also display boards near the entrance gate of the school that show the
Name, Philosophy, Vision, Mission, and Logo of the school. Also, there are tarpaulins for the
school uniform “no smoking” signage. Moreover, there are door signages in every office which is
very convenient for the students and visitors. Lastly, there were bulletin boards in each room
with different designs and documents attached to them.

FIELD STUDY 1 14
2. Where are the display boards found? Are they in place where target viewers can see them?

The display boards are visible. One (1) bulletin board is in the waiting area for parents and
visitors, while another is situated outside the management office for the teachers and school
staff. There is also a “no smoking” signage can be found at the hallway in the high school ground
which is big enough to be seen and read. Aside from that, the VMGOP display board is
prominently placed near the entrance gate, welcoming all visitors. Lastly, there are also signages
in each office that are clearly visible at the top of each door, ensuring easy navigation.

3. What are the displays about? What key message do they convey? What images and colors do you
see? How are the pieces of information and images arranged?
The school's bulletin boards effectively communicate important information to the school
community. The two bulletin boards mostly display announcements, school activities, class
schedules, examination schedule, and school uniforms. There are also display boards near the
entrance gate of the school that shows the Name, Philosophy, Vision, Mission, and Logo of the
school reinforcing the school's identity. Aside from that, there is also a tarpaulin for the
prescribed school uniform board that shows student models for reference. The tarpaulin for “No
Smoking” signage is also visible in the hallway and posted with its clear visual and textual
message, The office door signage (e.g. Management Office, Clinic, Registrar, Guidance Office,
etc.) are almost in the same layout, size, color, and font. Lastly, there were bulletin boards in
each room with different designs and documents attached to them.

4. What materials were used in making the displays? Are borders used?
The majority of the display boards are printed on tarpaulin. However, the school's name,
philosophy, vision, mission, and logo are prominently displayed on large silver metal plates. Each
display board is framed with a border, enhancing their visual appeal.

5. Do you notice some errors? (Misspelled words, grammar, inconsistencies and the like)
There were no errors have been read and observed.

6. Are the messages clear and easily understood?

Yes, the text on the display boards is written in simple English language, making it easily
understandable for the target audience, specifically parents. The use of large "READ ME"
headings effectively captures the attention of the visitors. Additionally, the inclusion of relevant
images enhances the audience comprehension and engagement

7. Think about what got your attention. Why did it get your attention?
One thing that catches my attention is the striking silver metal VMGOP display board at the
main entrance which creates a strong first impression, elevating the school's overall image. It
looks very classy, and it somehow makes the school a ‘high standard’, especially to its
commitment to quality which is further reinforced by the presence of vision and mission
statements within classrooms and offices. Additionally, the school's dedication to maintaining
high standards is evident in the well-displayed uniform tarpaulin.

8. Take a photo of the display boards (if allowed).
